Podium Presentation: Or Nurses Psychological Well-Being And Redeployment During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Joy Lanfranchi, Trisha Saul, Ross Bindler

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operating Room (OR) nurses were redeployed to patient care units during times of maximal surge capacity in hospitals caring for patients with the novel coronavirus. Hospital bed and staffing needs caused hospitals to cancel elective surgeries, allowing for conservation of bed space and nurses to accommodate the patient influx. Despite the highly specialized nature and skill set of OR nursing, OR nurses were expected to function in traditional patient care roles, where levels of self-assessed competence vary based on experience and training. There is a paucity of literature on the psychological impact of redeployment of …

Podium Presentation: Differences In Exercise Patterns Among Day And Night Shift Nurses During Covid-19 Surges, Randy Sanoff, Teresa Bigand, Elena Crooks, Katie Carroll, Mary Halabi

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits. Yet, some research suggests that number of steps taken per week decreased and time spent sedentary increased during the first year of the onset of COVID-19 compared to the year prior. Among nurses working full-time …

Heart and Vascular Articles

Background and Motivation: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most serious, non-curable, and expensive to treat. Recently, machine learning (ML) has shown to be able to predict cardiovascular/stroke risk in PD patients. The presence of COVID-19 causes the ML systems to become severely non-linear and poses challenges in cardiovascular/stroke risk stratification. Further, due to comorbidity, sample size constraints, and poor scientific and clinical validation techniques, there have been no well-explained ML paradigms. Deep neural networks are powerful learning machines that generalize non-linear conditions. This study presents a novel investigation of deep learning (DL) solutions for CVD/stroke risk prediction …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Microbiome-derived Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has been shown by multiple laboratories to reside within Alzheimer's disease (AD)-affected neocortical and hippocampal neurons. LPS and other pro-inflammatory stressors strongly induce a defined set of NF-kB (p50/p65)-sensitive human microRNAs, including a brain-enriched Homo sapien microRNA-30b-5p (hsa-miRNA-30b-5p; miRNA-30b). Here we provide evidence that this neuropathology-associated miRNA, known to be upregulated in AD brain and LPS-stressed human neuronal-glial (HNG) cells in primary culture targets the neurofilament light (NF-L) chain mRNA 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR), which is conducive to the post-transcriptional downregulation of NF-L expression observed within both AD and LPS-treated HNG cells. A deficiency of NF-L …

BACKGROUND: Children with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] are disproportionally affected by recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection [rCDI]. Although faecal microbiota transplantation [FMT] has been used with good efficacy in adults with IBD, little is known about outcomes associated with FMT in paediatric IBD.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of FMT at 20 paediatric centres in the USA from March 2012 to March 2020. Children with and without IBD were compared with determined differences in the efficacy of FMT for rCDI. In addition, children with IBD with and without a successful outcome were compared with determined predictors of success. Safety data …

Crispr/Cas13 Effectors Have Differing Extents Of Off-Target Effects That Limit Their Utility In Eukaryotic Cells, Yuxi Ai, Dongming Liang, Jeremy E Wilusz Jun 2022

Crispr/Cas13 Effectors Have Differing Extents Of Off-Target Effects That Limit Their Utility In Eukaryotic Cells, Yuxi Ai, Dongming Liang, Jeremy E Wilusz

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

CRISPR/Cas13 effectors have garnered increasing attention as easily customizable tools for detecting and depleting RNAs of interest. Near perfect complementarity between a target RNA and the Cas13-associated guide RNA is required for activation of Cas13 ribonuclease activity. Nonetheless, the specificity of Cas13 effectors in eukaryotic cells has been debated as the Cas13 nuclease domains can be exposed on the enzyme surface, providing the potential for promiscuous cleavage of nearby RNAs (so-called collateral damage). Here, using co-transfection assays in Drosophila and human cells, we found that the off-target effects of RxCas13d, a commonly used Cas13 effector, can be as strong as …

An Unusual Case Of Perforated Appendicitis In Situs Inversus Totalis In Indonesia, Valencia J. Martin, Imanuel T. Parinding

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery

Situs inversus is a rare congenital anomaly where the internal organs are transposed in a mirror image. It is commonly unrecognized until a patient comes with a complaint, especially in developing countries where people do not have a routine medical checkup. We report a case of a young female with unusual left lower quadrant pain abdominal pain. Perforated appendicitis leading to peritonitis was confirmed using ultrasonography and successfully treated with laparotomy. Appendicitis should be considered a working diagnosis in lower left quadrant abdominal pain

Revascularization Techniques For Infra-Popliteal Peripheral Artery Disease In Diabetic Foot: A Literature Review, Raden Suhartono, Ghany H. Wijaya

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery

Foot ulcers are one of the problems that are often encountered in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. With diabetic peripheral neuropathy, the typical clinical symptoms of PAD (peripheral arterial disease) may be obscured, leading to critical limb ischemia (CLTI). Diabetes may accelerate atherosclerosis that diminishes blood flow in PAD—further, diabetic patients with PAD often enfaces infra-popliteal lesions and require revascularization. However, studies on revascularization techniques in infra-popliteal PAD remain minimal. We reviewed the literature on EBSCO, and PubMed focused on the revascularization techniques in PAD, namely: expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), saphenous vein graft (SVG), atherectomy, surgical revascularization first, revascularization with endovascular bypass, direct …

Effect Of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury And Preconditioning On Lung Parenchyma After Acute Limb Ischemia, David Hutagaol, Dhama S. Susanti, Wuryantoro Soeharto, Muhammad A. Putra, Suprayitno Wardoyo, William Makdinata, Moira Setiawan

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery

Introduction. Acute limb ischemia, a sudden decrease of perfusion to the extremities, can compromise the survival of the limbs. Medical intervention and surgery are often needed to return perfusion. However, reperfusion injury can trigger oxidative stress and inflammatory response, leading to local and remote tissue damage, such as the lungs, which increases morbidity and mortality. This research aims to study the effects of hypothermia and remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on the lung parenchyma after being exposed to reperfusion after acute limb ischemia in rabbits.

Method. Eighteen New Zealand White rabbits were divided into three groups of 6. The …
