When thinking of athletes and orthopedic injuries, we often associate these injuries with more physical sports such as football, basketball, or even soccer. What we don’t realize is that an injury of any degree can occur in any sport, regardless of the level of physicality. An orthopedic injury is any injury to the bones, muscles, or joints of the musculoskeletal system. These injuries include, but are not limited to, ACL tears, meniscus tears, broken bones, muscle tears, sprains, dislocations, or fractures, obtained during a sport. BACKGROUND: Accurate radiation dose estimates are critical for determining eligibility for therapies by timely triaging of exposed individuals after large-scale radiation events. However, the universal assessment of a large population subjected to a nuclear spill incident or detonation is not feasible. Even with high-throughput dosimetry analysis, test volumes far exceed the capacities of first responders to measure radiation exposures directly, or to acquire and process samples for follow-on biodosimetry testing.

Theoretical models of mindfulness suggest that meditation may improve health, in part, by regulating stress physiology, including faster recovery of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (SBP/DBP) after emotional stress. Furthermore, improved cardiovascular recovery (CR) may be a marker of equanimity, defined as increased acceptance of and reduced reactivity to stress. No studies have tested this hypothesis, partly because methodology for assessing CR remains controversial. This study used an explanatory mixed-method design to investigate the relationships between preceptor mentorship in clinical education and success on the Board of Certification (BOC) exam for athletic trainers. The Athletic Training Preceptor Mentoring Traits Survey (ATPMTS) was developed by the researchers via a Delphi method following review of mentoring literature from nursing, athletic training, and academic medicine. Three hundred four athletic training students completed the survey during the last year of their training and before the BOC exam. Patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia have a high five-year survival rate thanks to methotrexate (MTX). However, cognitive side effects are reported, characterized as chemo brain. The study investigated if impulsiveness is part of the aberrant cognitive functions after being exposed to MTX in the early stage of physical development. Adolescent rats were injected with either phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or MTX. The novel object recognition (NOR) task was conducted a month after the injections to measure the memory deficits. BACKGROUND: While the Association of American Medical Colleges encourages medical schools to incorporate quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) into their curriculum, medical students continue to have limited QI/PS exposure. Abstract

Problem: The inability to maintain healthy weight gain during pregnancy may contribute to multiple pregnancy-related complications. Nutritional education and support may improve nutrition and vitamin consumption, and recommendations for healthy gestational weight gains have been published. However, pregnant women have reported minimal advice regarding healthy weight gain during pregnancy. A personalized, nutritional counseling program was initiated in a Midwestern, suburban OB-GYN private practice.

Methods: A quality improvement descriptive, correlational design was used. A cohort of pregnant women first trimester through six-weeks postpartum received individual counseling and face-to-face interaction at an office visit each trimester.

From 2014-16, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, infecting over 28,000 people, and killing over 11,000. Background: Gestational diabetes (GDM), a common pregnancy complication, increases the risk of dangerous birth outcomes, fetal anomalies, and sustained disease and comorbidity for mothers and infants throughout the lifespan. Insulin use is an independent predictor of anomalies. PURPOSE: The current trend for continuous drug product manufacturing requires new, affordable process analytical techniques (PAT) to ensure control of processing. This work evaluates whether property models based on spectral data from recent Fabry-Pérot Interferometer based NIR sensors can generate a high-resolution moisture signal suitable for process control.

METHODS: Spectral data and offline moisture content were recorded for 14 fluid bed dryer batches of pharmaceutical granules. A PLS moisture model was constructed resulting in a high resolution moisture signal, used to demonstrate (i) endpoint determination and (ii) evaluation of mass transfer performance.

Pulmonary artery dissection is a rare and lethal condition. Few cases are reported in the literature, and most are derived from autopsies. In most cases, pulmonary artery dissection is a complication of chronic pulmonary hypertension leading to pulmonary artery aneurysm but there are other causes. We describe a case of iatrogenic pulmonary artery dissection in an elderly patient with ostium secundum defect. In particular, we describe the role of cardiac magnetic resonance in making this diagnosis and guiding future therapeutic decisions.

A 78-year-old woman with a history of transient ischemic attack was admitted for sudden aphasia. In order to assess the potential cardioembolic source an echocardiogram was performed, which revealed a large mass consistent with a thrombus in transit through a patent foramen ovale. Because of the high risk of systemic embolism, emergent surgical thrombectomy was performed with the intention to discharge the patient safely without any new embolic events. This case report highlights the importance of echocardiography in the evaluation of cardioembolic stroke and the requirement of an emergent approach in case of impending paradoxical embolism.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis and its complications and pulmonary embolism. Cancer, surgery, prolonged immobilization, fractures, paralysis, use of oral contraceptives, and hereditary coagulopathies are classic risk factors for VTE. An increased incidence of VTE has been reported in patients with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), with a reported prevalence of 0.1e0.2% in the general population and up to 3.1% in infertile men. Wilms’ tumor (WT) is one of the solid tumor that affects children. It involves the kidney and may extend to the lungs and liver. WT conquers the adjacent blood vessels such as renal veins and inferior vena cava (IVC); its extension to IVC and right-sided heart chambers is unusual. Furthermore, when the tumor extends to heart chambers, its surgical management becomes challenging and demands multidisciplinary medical and surgical specialties including pediatric cardiac surgery. In this report, we discuss the surgical management and perioperative treatment of two unusual cases of WT with IVC and intracardiac extension.

Background: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by left ventricular dilation and dysfunction. The association with significant mitral regurgitation worsens the prognosis. Case report: A 2-year-old girl presented withDCMand severe mitral regurgitation. She had a history of viral myocarditis at the age of 4 months, necessitating recurrent hospital admissions for management of intractable heart failure, pneumonia, and failure to thrive. The decision was taken to proceed for mitral valve surgery, which ended with mitral valve replacement.
