Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra

This study examined birth outcomes among Deaf mothers who have given birth in a hospital setting versus a home setting. Deaf individuals are often marginalized in healthcare due to lack of accessibility, and therefore, the right to make their own informed decisions. This marginalization leads to inequality in health care, and oftentimes individuals within the Deaf community, with added intersectionalities, face even more discrimination. Deaf women face more health disparities in comparison to hearing women due to a variety of factors which include; lack of accessibility, medical professionals’ lack of cultural competency, and lack of inclusion in their healthcare decisions. …

Abnormal regulation of β-catenin initiates an oncogenic program that serves as a main driver of many cancers. Albeit challenging, β-catenin is an attractive drug target due to its role in maintenance of cancer stem cells and potential to eliminate cancer relapse. We have identified C2, a novel β-catenin inhibitor, which is a small molecule that binds to a novel allosteric site on the surface of β-catenin. C2 selectively inhibits β-catenin, lowers its cellular load and significantly reduces viability of β-catenin-driven cancer cells. Through direct binding to β-catenin, C2 renders the target inactive that eventually activates proteasome system for its removal. …

I have friends and family members working in all aspects of the medical system. They are PAs, PTs, nurses, doctors, caregivers, and support staff. They are on the frontline in the brutal battle against Covid-19. This is their story. It is a story about fear, duty, strength, and finding hope. While we adapt to this new normal and cope with the ever-changing landscape, we have to remember that we are all in this fight together.

This is a short reflection on two separate periods of intense mental and physical self-healing. Nature removed me from the imprisonment of my own mind around 8 years ago, only to fall back into its grips after a recent hip surgery. Hiking/physical activity was the only form of therapy that I was vulnerable enough to let heal me. It would break me down mentally and physically while rebuilding me at the same time. Some information was derived from personal journal entries but all are very relevant to each and every hike I take today.

Background: The burden of trauma-related-out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in developing countries like Pakistan remains largely unexplored due to a lack of organized pre-hospital systems. In order to estimate the burden, we used a two-sample capture-recapture method which has been used in several domains to estimate difficult-to-count populations.
Methods: We obtained 3-month data from two sources: Records of two major EMS (emergency medical services) systems and five major hospitals providing coverage to the city's population. Abstract

Problem. Patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes and their families report physical and psychosocial changes associated with complications after gastrointestinal surgeries. They are at particular risk for tube dislodgement, leakage, infection, poor fit, and skin irritation. The lack of specialization and fundamental stoma care knowledge among community health care providers potentially results in unintended consequences, leaving the system inefficient with fundamental inequities of stoma care delivery. While there is an increasing amount of accessibility to specialty centers for other types of wound care, stoma care support resources are scarce and not readily available to patients.

Background: In the 2018 AHA/ACC Blood Cholesterol Guideline, it is recommended that ASCVD patients be classified as very high-risk (VHR) vs not-VHR (NVHR) to guide treatment decisions. This has important implications for ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitor eligibility. We aimed to develop a tool that could assist in more easily identifying VHR patients based on machine learning (ML) techniques. This approach offers a powerful, assumption-free alternative to conventional methods, such as logistic regression, to identify potential interactions among risk factors while incorporating the hierarchy of interaction among variables.

Background: The Majority (99%) of maternal deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. The three most important causes of maternal deaths in these regions are postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia and puerperal sepsis. There are several diagnostic criteria used to identify sepsis and one of the commonly used criteria is systematic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). However, these criteria require laboratory investigations that may not be feasible in resource-constrained settings. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a model based on risk factors and clinical signs and symptoms that can identify sepsis early among postpartum women.
