Age-related hearing loss, known as presbyacusis, is characterized by the progressive deterioration of auditory sensitivity associated with the aging process and is the leading cause of adult auditory deficiency in the USA. Presbyacusis is described as a progressive, bilateral, high-frequency hearing loss that is manifested on audiometric assessment by a moderately sloping pure tone audiogram. Approximately 23% of the population between 65 and 75 years of age, and 40% of the population older than 75 years of age are affected by this condition. Objective: To determine the frequency and distribution of various risk factors and behaviours for coronary artery disease (CAD) among ambulatory Pakistanis.
Methods: It is a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out at the Aga Khan University Hospital, a teaching hospital in Karachi. All the subjects were adults (18-60 years) presenting at the general checkup clinic with no history or evidence of CAD by convenient sampling method. Demographic variables included risk factors and behaviors including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, family history of heart disease, obesity, smoking and sedentary lifestyle.

Helping Older Adults Adjust To Assisted Living: An Eco-Art Therapy Approach, Lynn M. Franta

The purpose of this exploratory study was to research the outcomes of an art therapy group using Ecopsychology principles as an aid for older adults adjusting to an assisted living facility. The group was designed to last over a 4-week period with two sessions per week. Outcomes were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales short form as well as through a structured interview format.

The study had six participants total; three men and three women, with ages ranging from 70 to 83 years. Findings were inconclusive as individual scores on the DASS varied widely. Participant report indicated overall …

Quantitative electroencephalograph (QEEG) reports of 14 healthy women participants engaged in art making in response to two general art therapy directives were generated and compared at Eastern Virginia Medical School. A Cadwell Easy-II 32-channel digital EEG and Physiometrx E-net which contains placements according to the International 10-20 system were used to collect brainwave activity. This study explored the effects of clay sculpting and marker drawing conditions on neural activity in the right and left frontal and parietal cortices.

Surgery is a strange, and often frightening experience for children. A number of programs have been studied which attempt to prepare children for the surgery experience. Art therapy may be especially suited to help prepare children for surgery because art making is an effective form of communication for children, and can allow them to express their thoughts and fears about surgery. Unfortunately, studies of art therapy preparation programs are rare, and usually take the form of case studies. This research study is the first step in designing an art therapy preparation program for preparing children for surgery.

INTRODUCTION

Because there is the possibility of unilateral loss of olfactory function or differential degrees of olfactory dysfunction in the two nostrils, unilateral tests of olfactory threshold sensitivity are routinely included in many chemosensory clinical test batteries to supplement bilateral tests (e.g., Cain et al., 1988; Hummel et al., 1997). Surprisingly, however, the results of unilateral testing in patients with chemosensory complaints have not been extensively reported. Thus, it is unclear how useful these additional measures are in characterizing individual patients.

Selecting the best treatment for a patient's disease may be facilitated by evaluating clinical characteristics or biomarker measurements at diagnosis. We consider how to evaluate the potential of such measurements to impact on treatment selection algorithms. For example, magnetic resonance neurographic imaging is potentially useful for deciding whether a patient should be treated surgically for carpal tunnel syndrome or if he/she should receive less invasive conservative therapy. We propose a graphical display, the selection impact (SI) curve, that shows the population response rate as a function of treatment selection criteria based on the marker. Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways mediate some important cellular processes and are likely to also regulate preimplantation development. The role of p38 MAP kinase signaling during murine preimplantation development was investigated in the present study. p38 MAPK, p38-regulated or -activated kinase (PRAK; MK5), map kinase-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2), and heat shock protein 25 (hsp25) mRNAs and proteins were detected throughout preimplantation development. Two-cell stage embryos cultured in the presence of SB220025 and SB203580 (specific inhibitors of p38 MAPK alpha/beta), progressed to the eight-cell stage with the same frequency as controls; however, treated embryos halted their development at the 8- …

Intramedullary spinal schwannomas are extremely rare. We describe a case of a 13-year-old female who was found to have an intramedullary schwannoma at craniovertebral junction along with incidental bilateral acoustic neuromas, which was excised completely. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of intramedullary schwannoma in association with NF-2 located at the craniovertebral junction. The literature has been reviewed with emphasis on radiological imaging, histopathological diagnosis and technique to achieve complete microsurgical excision.

Objective: To determine the percentage occurrence, clinical features and the age distribution of pregnancy-related dermatoses in pregnant females who were referred from Maternity Hospital Makkah to dermatology department for management at King Abdul Aziz Hospital, Makkah, Saudi-Arabia.

Methods: Patients who attended the dermatology clinic at King Abdul Aziz Hospital, Makkah were examined clinically and appropriate laboratory evaluation was done to facilitate diagnosis. These cases were managed till the termination of pregnancy and 10 weeks follow up in the puerperium. This study lasted for a period of 03 calendar years.

This study was designed to examine stool specimens of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients for Blastocystis hominis, a common intestinal parasite. One hundred fifty patients were enrolled, 95 IBS cases and 55 controls. These patients provided a medical history, and underwent physical and laboratory evaluations that included stool microscopy and culture for B. hominis and colonoscopy. The 95 cases (51 males and 44 females) had a mean +/- SD age of 37.8 +/- 13.2 years. The conformational propensities of the 21-residue peptide and its Oglycosylated analogs were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. This polypeptide motif comprises the tandem repeat of the human mucin (MUC1) protein core that is differently glycosylated in normal and cancer cells. To evaluate the structural effects of O-glycosylation on the polypeptide backbone, conformations of the nonglycosylated peptide and its glycosylated analogs were monitored during the 1 ns MD simulations. Radius gyration for whole peptide and its fragments, as well as root-mean-square-deviation between coordinate sets of the backbone atoms of starting structures and generated structures, were calculated. We investigated the role of B-Myb, a cell-cycle-regulated transcription factor, in the expression of the alpha1 (I) pro-collagen gene (COL1A1) in scleroderma fibroblasts. Scleroderma or SSc (systemic sclerosis) is a fibrotic disease characterized by excessive production of extracellular matrix components, especially type I collagen. Northern-blot analysis showed an inverse relationship between COL1A1 mRNA expression and that of B-Myb during exponential cell growth and during quiescence in human SSc fibroblasts. Overexpression of B-Myb in SSc fibroblasts was correlated with decreased COL1A1 mRNA expression. Transient transfections localized the down-regulatory effect of B-Myb to a region containing the proximal 174 bp of the …
