Historical Postcards (1908-2007)

Postcard shows the front of the University of Health Sciences Administration Building. From 1917 to 1970 the building at 1750 Independence Avenue was occupied by Children’s Mercy Hospital. In 1971 it was purchased by the Alumni Association of the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and gifted to the college. In 1979, after extensive renovations it became the school’s administration building. The school’s name was changed in 1980 to the University of Health Sciences and today is known as Kansas City University.

The back of the postcard advertises the American Osteopathic Association's 1999 national convention and lists alumni events.

Development in vitro is influenced by embryo density, serum, somatic cell co-culture and the production of 'embryotrophic' paracrine and autocrine factors. Research in our laboratory has focussed principally on the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) family. We have demonstrated that pre-attachment bovine and ovine embryos express mRNAs encoding a number of growth factor ligand and receptor genes including all members of the IGF ligand and receptor family throughout this developmental interval. In addition, early embryos express mRNAs encoding IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) 2-5 from the one-cell to the blastocyst stage and IGFBP5 mRNA at the blastocyst stage. Physical fitness, as described by Francis (1987), is the potential for making adequate functional adjustments to increased metabolic demands. Cardiorespiratory fitness (aerobic fitness) is believed to be the single best indicator of physical fitness (Astrand & Rodale, 1985). According to a 1998 UNAIDS/WHO report, HIV infection among women is the fastest-growing segment of the AIDS pandemic, especially in developing countries. Unfortunately, the HIV-prevention strategies put forward by the public health community—monogamy, condom use, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections—are not feasible for many women. Women urgently need a means within their personal control to protect themselves against HIV. Recognizing this need, a number of international and nongovernmental organizations and government agencies have called for the development of microbicides, products that women could use vaginally to prevent infection with sexually transmitted infections, particularly HIV. Objective: The objective of this study was to find out the level of knowledge the physicians and lay people have pertaining to the effect of cigarettes, why certain physicians smoke and what measures could be applied to reduce the rate of smoking.

Methods: A questionnaire was administered to the one hundred physicians who smoke, one hundred non-smoking physicians and one hundred lay people who smoke to determine their attitude towards this addition. Subjects were chosen using convenience sampling. The physicians were picked from six hospitals of Karachi.

Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in infants and children in the underdeveloped countries¹. Infants with mild deficiency tend to present with complications like hypocalcemic seizures whereas occurrence of pathological features in advanced rickets is well elucidated². Secondary myeloflbrosis has been reported as a complication of severe rickets and in these children anemia, myeloid metaplasia and bone marrow aplasia strongly suggested myelofibrosis. Despite the high prevalence of rickets in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent, there has been no report on this complication.We present a case of severe clinical rickets who had developed secondary myelofibrosis with hepatosplenomegaly. Native Americans have higher mortality rates than the general U.S. population for several major cancer sites. This report presents Alaska Native cancer survival rates and stage of disease at diagnosis. Data on survival and stage at diagnosis are given for all cancers combined, and for select primary cancer sites (the organ in which the cancer first began). Survival rates are given for only those cancers for which there were enough patients to calculate reliable estimates. The focus is on five-year relative survival rates because these rates are most commonly used in the cancer literature and most appropriate for comparisons between populations.

The needle localization procedure for breast biopsy (NLP) can be painful and distressing for some women. This study was carried out to learn what factors might increase or decrease NLP pain and distress, and to gain insight into possible interventions to make the procedure more comfortable for all patients. One hundred and thirty-eight women were surveyed following breast needle localization at two central Virginia hospitals. Adenoma Of The Ampulla Of Vater: A Genetic Condition?, Francesco M. Serafini, Larry C. Carey

The etiology of adenoma of the ampulla of Vater is not well understood. Previous authors reported the association of this neoplasm with polycystic kidney disease of two fraternal sisters. They concluded that these two conditions were somehow related. We describe a case of ampullary adenoma associated with polycystic kidney disease. This presentation raises again the question of a possible link between these two diseases.

Study Of The Molecular Basis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Heather Christine Glasscock-Hatcher

Abnormalities of the retinal vasculature contribute significantly to the development of diabetic retinopathy. In this study we have focused on two mechanisms which may be responsible-for the development and progression of this diabetic complication. Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with many of the vascular complications of diabetes mellitus; therefore, we examined mechanisms by which high-dose glucose damages retinal capillary endothelial cells. Our cell count results showed that high-dose glucose induces cell death in primary cultured human retinal capillary endothelial cells. Flow cytometry, in situ cell death detection, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cell death occurred via the apoptosis pathway …

Objective: The aim of the retrospective correlational analysis was to identify the attributes valued most by students for assessing the overall effectiveness of a teacher.
Methods: Responses of the students to the two versions of evaluation questionnaires, each attempting to assess 4 and 8 characteristics respectively on a scale of 1-5 were included in the analysis. The third and fourth year students, at the end of each course/module completed a total of 2110 evaluation forms, which were studied.

Effect Of Prepregnancy Body Mass Index And Gestational Weight Gain On Birth Weight, S S. Merchant, I A. Momin, A A. Sewani, N F. Zuberi

Objective: Nutritional status of women has been considered an important prognostic indicator of birth outcome. The study aims to show the effect of various prepregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) categories and corresponding gestational weight gain on newborn birth weight.
Methods: Two hundred women were included in the study. These women had regular antenatal visits and later delivered at The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) between the period January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1997.
Results: For women with prepregnancy BMI < 19., mean birth weight of newborns was lower for those gaining < 12.5 kg than those gaining > 12.5 kg (P < 0.001). Women who started their pregnancy with BMI 19.8-26 and gained weight above expected range gave birth to high birth weight babies (P = 0.009). Gestational weight gain did not have a significant association with birth weight for women having prepregnancy BMI > 26.
Conclusion: Efforts should be made to attain adequate prepregnancy weight to reduce the likelihood of low …
