Prevalence Of Iron Deficiency Anaemia In Children Of The Urban Slums Of Karachi, Ayesha Molla, Mohammad Khurshid, A. Majid Molla

A preliminary baseline survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence of anaemia in a group of 391 children aged 6-60 months, randomly selected from three urban slums of Karachi. Haemoglobin and the red cell indices including haematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, ABC and red cell distribution width (RDW) were estimated for each of the selected children. Ferritin estimation was done on 354 (9 1%) children to assess the iron storage status. According to WHO criteria, the accepted cut-off point for anaemia screening in children is set at 11 gm/dl, 70 fI and 20 pg for haemoglobin, MCV and MCH respectively. Following …

Research suggests that women are not well informed about the health related issues which are associated with the menopause. The purpose of this study was to determine women's: current knowledge of the menopause and of the disease osteoporosis; attitudes to estrogen replacement therapy (ERT); frequency of menopausal symptoms; knowledge-seeking behaviours In relation to the menopause; and, open-ended responses to menopausal issues. This study surveyed 70 women who responded to an advertisement in Community Newspapers. Replication of human adenovirus type 12 DNA is blocked in abortively infected baby hamster kidney cells. The activity and accumulation of adenovirus 12 DNA polymerase is equivalent in infected hamster and human cell extracts. However, the accumulation of adenovirus type 12 DNA-binding protein is approximately 120-fold lower in extracts from infected hamster cells when compared to infected permissive human cells. This difference in accumulation is not because of replication of viral DNA during productive infection, since this difference is observed in the presence of hydroxyurea. A Descriptive Study Of Bone Health Risk Factors In Females Ages 13 To 16 Years, Anita M. Johnson

The purpose of this study was to describe the known risk factor profile for bone health in an apparently healthy female adolescent population. A risk profile of nine factors, compiled from the current research literature included the following risks: (a) Female gender, (b) family history of osteoporosis, (c) Caucasian or Oriental race, (d) slender body frame/underweight, (e) dietary intake less than 1500 mg calcium/day, (f) weight-bearing physical activity less than 60 minutes three times a week, (g) amenorrhea or irregular menses associated with strenuous physical training, (h) smoking, and (i) alcohol use.
