Quinidine-Induced Immune Thrombocytopenia, Mansoor N. Saleh, Nadhav Dhodaphar, Karen Allen, Albert F. Lobuglio
Quinidine-Induced Immune Thrombocytopenia, Mansoor N. Saleh, Nadhav Dhodaphar, Karen Allen, Albert F. Lobuglio
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We have identified six cases of quinidine-induced immune thrombocytopenia based on clinical evidence and in association with elevated amounts of platelet surface IgG. The degree of thrombocytopenia did not correlate with severity of clinical symptoms, nor did it predict the amount of IgG on the platelet surface. Three of the patients recovered promptly after drug discontinuation alone whereas the other patients received additional corticosteroid therapy. The clinical presentation, mode of diagnosis, and therapeutic considerations in the treatment of drug-induced thrombocytopenia are discussed.
Primary Fibrinolysis In Acute Monocytic Leukemia, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Sundara B. K. Raman, Nalini Janakiraman
Primary Fibrinolysis In Acute Monocytic Leukemia, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Sundara B. K. Raman, Nalini Janakiraman
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We present the case of a young man with acute monocytic leukemia (French-American-British classification:M5) and systemic hyperfibrinolysis with severe bleeding. Although fibrinolysis is usually mild and secorulary to disseminated intravascular coagulation, its role as a primary and dominant factor in rare cases of leukemia warrants that its presence be sought as a cause of abnormal bleeding. Decreased serum plasminogen and increased serum plasmin determined by synthetic substrate assay and a negative protamine paracoagulation test are crucial findings. Use of high-dose epsilon-aminocaproic acid was effective in treating this complication. A transient increase in fibrinolytic activity coincident with the early effect of …

Cerebral Infarction Associated With Cocaine Use, Iliana Meza, Carlos A. Estrada, Justo A. Montalvo, Walter N. Hidalgo, Jennie Andresen
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We report the case of a young man with an acute infarction of the left putamen and caudate nucleus, whose symptoms appeared six hours after intranasal use of approximately 0.5 g of cocaine hydrochloride. It seems probable that in this patient cocaine consumption played a role in the development of stroke.

Anomaly In Equation For Calculating 16pf Second Order Factor Qiii, Gregory J. Boyle
Anomaly In Equation For Calculating 16pf Second Order Factor Qiii, Gregory J. Boyle
Gregory J. Boyle
Recently, the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (IPAT) has released a new set of equations for calculating 16PF second-order factors. These revised equations were compared with the earlier ones provided in the l6PF Handbook, as well as with those used in the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ) for computing the second-order trait dimensions. It was found that the earlier 16PF Handbook equation for calculating QIII (Tough Poise) was not accurate. It is recommended that only the new equations be employed in future work with the 16PF. Moreover, this finding may have implications for published studies involving the 16PF second-order factors …
Hemoglobin Subunit-Subunit Affinity-Determinant Of Hemoglobin Formation, Ali Mansouri, Inge R. Carter
Hemoglobin Subunit-Subunit Affinity-Determinant Of Hemoglobin Formation, Ali Mansouri, Inge R. Carter
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Hemoglobin A₂ is often elevated in β-thalassemia and decreased in α-thalassemia. This might be due to hemoglobin subunit-subunit affinity variation. It has been inferred from the study of abnormal hemoglobins that the a subunits have higher affinity for β subunits than for δ subunits. However, only in one study has the affinity of α, β, and δ subunits for each other been measured. In this work we have attempted to measure the hemoglobin subunit-subunit affinity with somewhat different approach, i.e., hybridization of hemoglobin A and A₂. It is shown that hybridization and recombination of equal amounts of hemoglobins A and …

Animal Bite Infections., Joel D. Klein, Md
Animal Bite Infections., Joel D. Klein, Md
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Animal bites have become alarmingly common and may represent a quiet epidemic. It is estimated that between 1 and 3.5 million animal bites occur annually in the United States. The highest incidence has consistently been in 5-to-14-year-old schoolchildren, who have greater contact with animals, especially house pets, on a daily basis. This article discusses the epidemiology, microbiology, clinical findings and management of animal bites infections.

Local Anaesthetic Cream For The Alleviation Of Pain During Venepuncture In Tanzanian Schoolchidren, U. Hellgren, C.M. Kihamia, Zul Premji, K. Danielson
Pathology, East Africa
The analgesic effect and the usefulness of EMLA cream 5% in connection with venous blood-sampling was investigated in 42 Tanzanian schoolchildren. Approximately 2.5 g EMLA was applied to the right cubital fossa for a minimum of 120 min. The analgesic effect was pronounced - 93% of the venepunctures were pain-free and no child experienced severe pain. No adverse reactions were observed and the children could continue normal school work during the application time.
Efficacy Of A Home Made Quality Control Serum, Rukbsana Lalani, Ayesha Molla, Mohammad Khurshid
Efficacy Of A Home Made Quality Control Serum, Rukbsana Lalani, Ayesha Molla, Mohammad Khurshid
Section of Haematology/Oncology
With increasing automation in Clinical Laboratories, the requirements for quality control material have greatly increased in order to monitor performance. The constant use of commercial control material is not economically feasible for many countries because of non-availability or the high cost of these materials. Here we describe a simple technique to prepare Home Made Quality Control serum using blood from polycythaemic patients. This preparation is stable for about six months without any alterations in the concentration of any of the chemical constituents. Extensive use of Home Made Quality Control sera in our laboratories have saved about 69% of the amount …

Neonatal Screening For Congenital Hypothyroidism In Pakistan, Murntaz Lakhani, Mohammad Khurshid, Shehla H. Naqvi, Mohammad Akber
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Congenital hypothyroidism is a preventable cause of mental retardation. Since clinical signs of congenital hypothyroidism do not generally become obvious before three months of age, screening programmes have been introduced in North America and Europe, which consist of T4 or TSH screening on newborn infants on the third day of life. The screening for congenital hypothyroidism was initiated in Pakistan by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in March 1987. By April 1988, 5000 neonates were screened and five cases of congenital hypothyroidism were diagnosed. The study revealed the incidence of hypothyroidism to be one case per 1000 newborns which …

Mood Induction, Interpersonal Perceptions, And Behavioral Rejection In Students With Depressed, Non-Depressed Disturbed, And Normal Roommates, Charles A. Sanislow, David V. Perkins, Deborah Ware Balogh
Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
The present study used the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to select, based on multidimensional criteria, 51 college students who displayed depression alone, depression in conjunction with other psychological disturbance (PD), nondepressive PD, or no PD. All students had been living with randomly assigned roommates (RMs) for at least 10 wks. RMs of these students completed the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List, the Profile of Mood States, MMPI-168 Depression scale items, and items concerning roommate behavior. RMs of students depressed in conjunction with other PD were significantly more depressed themselves on 2 measures than were RMs of students in the …
