Cephalometric Norms For The Mexican Population Using The Ricketts, Steinar, And Tweed Analyses, Eduardo A. Velarde

In order to investigate the characteristics of the facial complex of the Mexican and to compare them with the Caucasian, a sample of 40 subjects, 31 males and nine females, of Latin American origin from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, with a mean age of 16.6 years, were selected for this study. The criteria for selection were visual and only individuals with clinical normal, Angle Class I occlusion were chosen.

Lateral head Roentgenograms were obtained and cephalometric evaluation of the Skeletal and Dental Pattern was carried out using the Ricketts, Steiner, and Tweed Analyses.

This study was concerned with the problem of depression among elderly patients following surgery. The purpose of the study was to find out if older men following transurethral prostatectomy experienced a higher level of depression than normal elderly people in the general population. An attempt was made in the study to suggest factors in the patients' illness or environment which may have influenced the amount of depression they experienced.

The virulence of animal-passaged Mycoplasma arthritidis (158) was demonstrated to be enhanced in rats by growth in oleic acid-enriched broth. The virulence of a laboratory-maintained culture of the same strain was unaffected by similar growth conditions. No differences either in the immune response as measured by complement-fixing (CF) antibodies or in the histogenesis of the disease were detected when rats were injected with animal-passaged M. arthritidis grown either in the presence or in the absence of oleic acid. All tests for metabolism-inhibiting (MI) antibodies in the rat were negative.

A kinesiological electromyographic study was completed to determine the relative changes in muscle activity as a person walks and stands with different degrees of knee flexion deformity. The ultimate aim was to establish criteria for appropriate preventive and corrective measures relating to knee flexion deformity.

Six different muscles were implanted with wire electrodes. The subjects performed a series of walking and standing experiments with the knee flexed at selected angles by a locking leg brace to simulate knee flexion deformity. This investigation concerns the relationship of diabetes mellitus and vascular hypertension to oral lichen planus. Questionnaires were sent to 470 patients with oral lichen planus: 286 responded. Of these patients 103 were examined clinically, and 74 with current lesions were divided into ''keratotic'' and ''erosive'' categories. These patients underwent three-hour oral glucose tolerance tests; also, their asterial blood pressure was determined. In the survey group, diabetes was reported about three times more frequently by those with "erosive"; oral lichen planus than by those ''keratoic" lesions. The main purpose of this investigation was to test the endodontic sealing abilities of silver cones, N2, warm gutta percha, chemically softened gutta percha, laterally condensed gutta percha and Cavit under carefully controlled conditions. Evaluations were done by radiographic, macroscopic, microscopic, and autoradiographic examinations.

This exploratory retrospective study was designed to evaluate selected factors, including the ability to regain bladder function related to post indwelling urethral catheterization in an acute general hospital population.

The records of 107 patients who met the study criteria became the study population. These patients had three-way urethral catheters, continuous antibacterial irrigation and closed drainage system. Twenty patients died (19 percent) before the catheter was removed. Of the 87 patients who were alive, 37 percent (32 patients) had in-adequate bladder function. Of these 32 patients, no attempt was made to remove the catheter from 15 prior to their hospital discharge. …

This study was conducted to clinically evaluate cuspid and anterior retraction in first bicuspid extraction cases using the Light Progressive Technique. More specifically interest was centered on rate of cuspid and anterior retraction, anchorage preservation or control, difficulty of appliance adjustments, time involved in adjustments, frequency of adjustments, total retraction time, patient discomfort, root resorption, as well as a complete cephalometric appraisal. Seven patients were treated for ten months. The appliance was activated at three week intervals, and progress recorded monthly.

Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.

Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. An investigation has been conducted to consider the effects of midpalatal suture expansion on the cranial-facial complex. Nine patients were treated that had constricted maxillae. Data was obtained from frontal and lateral headplate radiographs which were taken at four intervals during treatment. The Rocky Mountain Data Systems diagnosis was utilized to interpret the radiographic data.

Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.

Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. Gnathologists have suggested that in order to prevent excessive wear on posterior teeth, alveolar bone loss due to traumatic occlusion, and temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disturbances, the mandibular incisors should disclude the posterior teeth by moving along the lingual surfaces of the maxillary incisors as the condyles move down the articular eminence in protrusion. It is suggested that in order for this to occur, the lingual surface of the maxillary incisors should be steeper than the eminence.

A study of orthodontic treatment results employing Class II Armstrong Adjustable Intermaxillary Springs was made on twenty-eight randomly selected patients which were treated by Dr. Maclay Armstrong.

The skeletal and dental changes observed during treatment with the Class II springs was compared with those results observed when comparable type malocclusions were treated with Class II elastics. A list of changes which were observed during treatment with Class II elastics was compiled from the literature using individual studies published by Ricketts, Creekmore and Hanes.

A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. These findings were analyzed statistically to determine significant differences in the profile and detect the relationship between the integument and hard structures.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cranial and facial bone growth in the puberal Macaca mulatta monkey over a six month period utilizing the methods of metallic implantation combined with serial cephalometric roentgenography and a bichromatic vital staining method.

The employment of the vital stains, alizarin Red S and anthracene blue, over the six month period of the study, failed to stain the actively growing bone as evidenced by gross and microscopic analysis of the undecalcified bone preparations.

The purpose of this study was to determine changes that occur in the craniofacial complex, when a heavy interrupted orthopedic force is employed to retract the maxilla in the post puberal rhesus monkey. Cephalometric, histologic and anatomic examinations were utilized to substantiate the findings.

Four female rhesus monkeys were used for experimentation. Two were experimental animals and the other two controls. Cervical retraction with headgear was applied over a period of 313 days and 159 days to the two experimental animals. Forces not exceeding 2.5 lbs. were found most effective.

Sleep was hypothesized as a factor affecting either the occurrence or severity of postpartum depression. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation and postpartum depression.

Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies.
