A deleterious effect of spaceflight on human health is the loss of bone associated with the prolonged lack of gravitational stress on the skeleton. A potential for bone loss is indicated by the hypercalciuria and decreased heel bone density determined in Skylab astronauts. Histological studies of juvenile laboratory rats in actual spaceflight and in simulation models document a suppression of bone formation with little alteration of bone resorption. The mechanism for net bone loss needs to be defined in order to develop measures for its prevention or correction.

Light touch and low-frequency vibration sense are often impaired in diabetic patients. Meissner corpuscles are distally located mechanoreceptors that respond to these stimuli. Peripheral sensory neuropathy in diabetes progresses from distal to proximal, therefore, Meissner corpuscles are ideally suited to study diabetic neuropathy in the C57BL/Ks (db/db) mouse.

Corpuscles from the forepaw digital pads of 9 diabetic and 9 nondiabetic littermates were studied by electron microscopy. These were divided into 3 age groups; 2.5 months, 10 months, and 17 months old.

The effects of systemic hypercapnia on brainstem metabolism were studied with the [6-¹⁴C] glucose autoradiography method. Neuronal pools which are metabolically active take up more [6-¹⁴C] glucose and maybe revealed pictorially as darker areas on autoradiograms. Since a high concentration of carbon dioxide stimulates central chemoreceptors and hence enhances respiratory drive, the darker regions on the autoradiograms may represent regions concentrated with respiratory-related neurons. Skinfold calipers are often used to assess body fat percentage, particularly in non-clinical settings, test sites recommended by researchers are the triceps and The subscapular skinfolds. This report provides an abbreviated review of the literature on treatment and prognosis of periodontal furcation lesions. In addition, it describes a surgical technique designed to accomplish bone regeneration in class II furcation defects, together with the rationale for the development of this procedure. Results of treatment of 30 defects with this technique are presented in a subsequent report (Gantes et al. 1987).

An eighteen-year old female with Oromandibular Limb Hypogenesis Syndrome Type 1A was imaged with Magnetic Resonance in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes with the jaws closed. The intrinsic muscles of the tongue, genioglossus, geniohyoid, mylohyoid, medial and lateral pterygoid muscles were identified and compared with a control of the same age and sex. All the muscles in question were present. Combined with the intrinsic muscles of the tongue, the genioglossus were approximately one-half the size of the control in the sagittal plane. Insulin And Glucagon Responses To Dietary Protein In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Men, Monica L. Blomstedt

Five men with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and fourteen nondiabetic men, were given test meals with soy protein, casein or additional carbohydrate in place of protein. Blood levels of insulin, glucagon, glucose and lipids were measured at fasting, one-half hour and two hours postprandial. To all meals, the nondiabetic subjects responded with a quick rise of the insulin level which decreased at two hours. In contrast, the diabetics showed a significantly lower insulin response at one-half hour (p < 0.05), but a tendency to higher levels at two hours. The same pattern was observed in the insulin to glucagon ratio. No significant difference between the meals was found in regard to insulin or glucagon responses, suggests that a sustained, although delayed postprandial insulin response, may be a precursor to the higher cholesterol and increased risk for cardiovascular disease among diabetics.

Many orthodontists have shown professional concern by taking pretreatment lateral tomograms to assess developmental abnormalities, previous injury, pathology, and condylar position. The purpose of this study was to determine the consistency of orthodontists in evaluating lateral tomograms and panoramic films, particularly when used prior to treatment. Lateral tomograms and panoramic films of 60 single joints were evaluated by 4 orthodontists on two separate occasions. Recent studies have shown that forces applied to the mandible during functional appliance and other orthodontic therapies produce measurable changes in the TMJ. It was postulated that specific malocclusions might also apply forces that could produce specific changes in the horizontal morphology of the TMJ. This study involved 104 pretreatment orthodontic patients, 44 males and 60 females. Lateral expansions of the mandible through surgical separation at the symphysis have been done in animal studies. A combination of these procedures has not yet been done together.

The intent of this paper was to: 1. Evaluate the mode of adhesive failure when debonding both flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets. 2. Evaluate the bracket bases for enamel detachments. 3. Measure the enamel detachments.

After preforming shear test on flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets mounted to extracted human teeth it was determined that failure occurred at the enamel/adhesive interface 30% of the time, at the bracket/adhesive interface 10% of the time and a combination of these 60% of the time for both groups.

This thesis is based on a qualitative and quantitative study of the neural component of Meissner corpuscles of diabetic and non-diabetic mice. Age-related changes were also documented in these mechanoreceptors. Corpuscles from forty-six diabetic mice and forty-six non-diabetic mice ranging from 2.5 to 17 months old were studied. Forepaw index digital pads were formalin-fixed and frozen-sectioned parallel to each digit and perpendicular to the skin. Serial sections were then silver-impregnated to allow light microscopic examination of the neurites in the corpuscles.

Neurites became more coarse, tortuous, branched, varicose, and thus more complex until middle age. Corpuscle size appeared greatest at …

Scans taken with a GE CT/N 8800 scanner of an adult cadaver and a 12-patient group were obtained through the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, TMJ Department, and Loma Linda University Medical Center, Department of Neuroradiology.

The lateral scout image and a lateral cephalogram of the cadaver were compared using six angular measurements for facial type from Ricketts' Cephalometric Analysis. The zinc status of twelve lacto-ovo-vegetariah pregnant women and seventeen non-vegetarian pregnant women was evaluated. Zinc intakes were calculated from three-day dietary records and twenty-four hour dietary histories. Plasma zinc levels were drawn during the last trimester of pregnancy and approximately ten weeks postpartum. Gestational age at birth, birthweight, and APGAR scores of the infants born were obtained from the medical charts. Dietary zinc intakes for the vegetarians (10.5 ± 4.0 mg) did not differ significantly from the intakes of the non-vegetarians (10.9 ± 3.0 mg). The paper reports on the philosophy and clinical results of an individualized but concentrated team approach to hospitalized patients undergoing a psychological crisis. The team focuses on the patient’s key vital coping technique as the source of his vulnerability and assists the patient toward constructive self-understanding. The approach favors maximum therapeutic benefit from a short hospital stay. Follow-up of the first fifteen cases managed by this method discloses a significantly low percentage of relapse and rehospitalization, and demonstrates that even such relapses can be turned to therapeutic benefit.

A sample of twelve Frankel appliance (FR-2) treated patients, in the mixed dentition stage, were selectively chosen by an orthodontist based on the Class II correction and evaluated from before treatment and end of treatment laminagraphic and lateral cephalometric radiographs. The average treatment period was 22 months (1 yr. 10 mos.). The average pre-treatment age was 9.5 years with a range from 8 to 11 years old, while the average post-treatment age was 11.3 years with a range of 10 to 13 years.

To determine of the fetal liver functions as a blood reservoir, we measured liver blood volume under normal conditions and after hemorrhage and volume loading. Nineteen pregnant guinea pig sows and 54 near-term fetuses were injected intravenously with ⁵¹Cr-labeled red cells while the fetuses remained in utero. Ninety seconds later a 0.5-1.0 g sample of liver was garroted with a sharp wire into a tared tube with minimal blood loss. This study was a descriptive survey establishing a baseline level of self-esteem and health locus of control in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) adolescents. The purpose of the research was to study and describe health behaviors of IDDM adolescents in regards to self-concept and health locus of control.
