Introduction: Neuronal apoptosis and consequent inhibition of autophagy, with loss of synaptic connections are central events in the genesis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). However, studies of molecular mechanisms of autophagy in human fetal brain are limited. Recently, prenatal exposure to EtOH was associated with reduced miRNA-9 levels in fetal brain-derived exosomes (FB- Es) isolated from maternal plasma, which correlated with small eyes, an anatomical hallmark of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Since miR-9 targets several genes that regulate synaptic plasticity, EtOH-induced inhibition of miR-9 could potentially result in dysregulation of genes involved in synaptogenesis/plasticity.

Methods: Rats were fed a …

Semi-Quantitative Assessment Of Surgical Navigation Accuracy During Endoscopic Sinus Surgery In A Real-World Environment, David Z Allen, Jason Talmadge, Martin J Citardi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Although surgical navigation is commonly used in rhinologic surgery, data on real world performance are sparse because of difficulties in collecting measurements for target registration error (TRE). Despite publications showing submillimeter TRE, surgeons do report TRE of >3 mm. We describe a novel method for assessing TRE during surgery and report findings with this technique.

Methods: The TruDi navigation system (Acclarent, Irving, CA) was registered using a contour-based protocol. The surgeon estimated target registration error (e-TRE) at up to 8 points (anatomic regions of interest [ROI]) during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). System logs were used to simulate the localization …

The Interplay Between Pulse Width And Activation Depth In Tens: A Computational Study, Alexander Guillen, Dennis Q Truong, Yusuf O Cakmak, Sheng Li, Abhishek Datta

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been a commonly used modality to relieve aches and pain for over 40 years. Commercially available devices provide multiple therapy modes involving a different combination of frequency and pulse width with intensity. While frequency sets sensation, intensity helps determine tolerability, longer pulse width is reported to induce a feeling of deeper stimulation. In fact, longer pulse width has been empirically shown to deliver current into deeper tissues, but in context of other electrical stimulation modalities. The goal of this study was to unpack the relationship between pulse width and activation depth in TENS. …

Accurate identification and categorization of suicidal events can yield better suicide precautions, reducing operational burden, and improving care quality in high-acuity psychiatric settings. Pre-trained language models offer promise for identifying suicidality from unstructured clinical narratives. We evaluated the performance of four BERT-based models using two fine-tuning strategies (multiple single-label and single multi-label) for detecting coexisting suicidal events from 500 annotated psychiatric evaluation notes. The notes were labeled for suicidal ideation (SI), suicide attempts (SA), exposure to suicide (ES), and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). RoBERTa outperformed other models using binary relevance (acc=0.86, F1=0.78). MentalBERT (F1=0.74) also exceeded BioClinicalBERT (F1=0.72). RoBERTa fine-tuned with …

The accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While amyloid-beta propagation through prion-like mechanisms has been extensively studied in both central and peripheral pathways, the potential spreading of tau aggregates in the periphery remains largely unexplored. Emerging evidence suggests that hyperphosphorylated tau (ptau) aggregates may propagate beyond the central nervous system, as they have been detected in peripheral tissues and biological fluids from humans and mouse models of tauopathies. However, whether peripheral ptau aggregates or other factors associated to its accumulation contribute to brain pathology remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cervids susceptible to chronic wasting disease (CWD) are sympatric with multiple other animal species that can interact with infectious prions. Several reports have described the susceptibility of other species to CWD prions, or their potential to transport them. One of these species is the coyote (Canis latrans), which has been previously shown to pass transmission-relevant prion titers in their feces for at least three days after ingesting prion-positive brain material. The current study followed up on these findings and evaluated the distribution of prions in multiple tissues from the same coyotes. Our results show that prions persist in the digestive …

Identification Of Prothrombin Belgrade Variant In A Mexican-American Family With Recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis, Émile Moura Coelho Da Silva, Natalie Montanez, Miguel Escobar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A rare prothrombin variant (c.1787G > A, p.Arg596Gln), also known as the prothrombin Belgrade variant, has been associated with an increased predisposition to thrombosis through resistance to antithrombin. This variant has been previously reported in individuals from Serbia, Japan, China, and India. In this case report, we described the first reported case of heterozygosity for the prothrombin Belgrade variant in a Mexican-American family. Affected individuals had negative results on standard hypercoagulable studies; however, they exhibited a history of early-onset and recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE). Although rare, the prothrombin Belgrade variant-and other prothrombin variants associated with antithrombin resistance-may be underrecognized in patients …

Exacerbation Of Paclitaxel-Induced Neuropathic Pain Behaviors In Breast Tumor-Bearing Mice, Hee Kee Kim, Juping Xing, Youn-Sang Jung, Jae-Il Park, Hee Young Kim, Jimin Kim, Salahadin Abdi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Chronic pain and cancer interact bidirectionally, with pain enhancing sensory peptides and potentially promoting tumor growth. Despite this, most chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CIPN) studies overlook the contribution of cancer itself to neuropathy, focusing instead on chemotherapy-induced mechanisms. Animal models of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) have been developed by injecting chemotherapeutic drugs such as paclitaxel into normal animals without cancer. This study aimed to develop a new model in mouse mammary tumor virus-polyomavirus middle T antigen (MMTV-PyMT) mice, a widely used breast cancer model with normal immune function.

Results: The percentage of positive response (PPR) of paclitaxel-injected MMTV-PyMT mice increased …

A New, Early Cretaceous Carettochelyid Turtle From South Korea Provides Insights Into Softshell Evolution And Aquatic Ecology, Minguk Kim, Jongyun Jung, Walter G Joyce, Jae-Il Park, Hye-Yeon Jung, Hyemin Jo, Min Huh

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Here, we present a new Cretaceous carettochelyid turtle, Byeoljubuchelys yeosuensis gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous Hasandong Formation of Yeosu, Korea. A nearly complete shell and select elements of the girdles and limbs provide crucial insight into the evolution and aquatic adaptation of this family. Phylogenetic analyses place Byeoljubuchelys yeosuensis at the most basal position within Carettochelyidae. The mid-sized plastron of Byeoljubuchelys yeosuensis appears to be plesiomorphic for the group. The expansion of the plastron during carettochelyid evolution, especially during the Paleogene, may be an evolutionary response to increasing body size or the threat of mammalian predators. …

Natural resource management networks cohere due to mutual dependencies and fragment, in part, due to the perceived risks of interaction. However, research on these networks has tended to accept coherence a priori rather than problematizing dependence, and few studies exist on interorganizational risk perception. This article presents the results of a study operationalizing these concepts and measuring the distribution of three types of dependence (capital, legitimacy, and regulatory) and two types of perceived risk (performance and sanction) among nearly fifty stakeholder groups and organizations participating in the management of fisheries in the binational Gulf of Maine. The analysis reveals an …

Advanced Method For The In Vivo Measurements Of Lysophospholipid Translocation Across The Inner (Cytoplasmic) Membrane Of Escherichia Coli, Yibin Lin, Lei Zheng, Mikhail Bogdanov

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Phospholipid translocation occurs ubiquitously in biological membranes and primarily is protein catalyzed. Lipid flippases mediate the net translocation of specific phospholipids from one leaflet of a membrane to the other. In the inner (cytoplasmic) membrane (IM) of Gram-negative bacteria, lysophospholipid translocase (LplT) and cytosolic bifunctional acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) synthetase/2-acylglycerolphosphoethanolamine acyltransferase (Aas) form a glycerophospholipid regeneration system, which is capable of facilitating rapid retrograde translocation of lyso forms of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and cardiolipin (CL) but not exogenous (host-derived) phosphatidylcholine (PC) across the IM of Gram-negative diderm (two-membraned) bacteria in consequential order lyso-PE = lyso-PG > > lysophosphatidic acid (lyso-PA) >> lyso-PC. …

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a multitude of cellular and pathological changes including neuronal loss, axonal damage, gliosis, and loss of motor and sensory function. In 40%-70% of patients, SCI can also trigger the development of neuropathic pain. Our previous study demonstrated that SCI patients who developed autoantibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were at increased risk for the subsequent development of neuropathic pain. However, whether GFAP autoantibodies (GFAPab) contribute to the development of neuropathic pain after SCI had yet to be examined.

Objective: Using a mid-thoracic contusion model of SCI in male Sprague-Dawley rats, we examined …
