Background: While there has been significant focus on individual and programmatic factors impacting general surgical residents wellbeing and burnout, the effect of the greater institutional macrocosm has not been well studied. Our work seeks to identify organizational factors that may be implicated in resident wellness. Summary of Work: Using a modified Delphi technique, a survey structured around six domains of the Maslach Burnout Theory (workload, control, reward, community, fairness, values) was distributed to wellness stakeholders at two institutions. Background: The development of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have allowed for improved patient outcomes by utilizing a multimodal approach. The use of ERAS for surgical procedures reduces perioperative complications that could lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and length of stay. Additionally, by utilizing a multimodal approach, ERAS protocols help limit opioid use during the perioperative period. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to examine the rate of compliance to the ERAS protocol during colorectal surgery at Beaumont Hospital- Royal Oak. Background: The recent opioid epidemic in the United States has damaged the country’s public health system and led to devastating patient outcomes. Healthcare providers are responsible to do their part in reducing these negative consequences. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop and implement an evidence-based protocol for an intraoperative lidocaine infusion during gastric surgery. The project consisted of five parts: (1) development of an evidenced-based Intraoperative Lidocaine Infusion Protocol, (2) education of the anesthesia team, (3) collection of baseline data, (4) implementation of the Intraoperative Lidocaine Infusion Protocol and (5) evaluation of the results. INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is a common complication after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) but is not a routinely asked question in legacy patient-reported outcome measures. This study looks to see whether there are associations between dysphagia and legacy outcome measures. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 168 patients who underwent ACDF surgery from 2017 to 2019 at a single institution. Demographics, anthropometric data, Neck disability index (NDI), visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, PROMIS-Health and -Mental scores, Charlson Comorbidities Index (CCI), and Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) were obtained for each patient preop and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postop. BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus affects 13% of American adults. To address the complex care requirements necessary to avoid diabetes-related morbidity, the American Diabetes Association recommends utilization of multidisciplinary teams. Research shows pharmacists have a positive impact on multiple clinical diabetic outcomes. We aimed to determine impact of an education-focused pharmacist managed diabetes clinic model (PMDC) on hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and other diabetes core measures at 6 and 12 months follow-up. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is a well-known post-transplant malignancy common in both solid organ and stem cell transplants. The incidence of PTLD in adult liver transplant recipients is approximately 2.8%. While most often presenting in the first year after transplant, PTLD can occur at any time. This case report narrates a 61-year-old female with a history of liver transplant in 1992 for autoimmune hepatitis that was found to have a jejunal perforation due to PTLD 27 years later. Improved survival rates of pediatric oncology patients give them the opportunity to return to school. This can present a significant challenge, as returning students often become vulnerable to peer rejection. The objective of this double-arm descriptive study was to establish a framework from which to optimize a school reintegration intervention for the peers of pediatric oncology patients. Ultimately, the study aimed to promote increased knowledge, acceptance by peers, and a smooth transition back to school for childhood cancer survivors. NUT midline carcinomas are rare poorly differentiated tumors driven by t(15,19) rearrangements and clinically characterized by rapid progression and high mortality. A 49 year-old-male with no comorbidities, presented with acute worsening of chronic cough, new onset hemoptysis and left sided chest pain for 2 weeks. Workup revealed NUT midline carcinoma of the lung as confirmed by next-generation sequencing that revealed the presence of a NUTM1-BRD4 fusion. He was diagnosed with NUT midline lung cancer clinical stage IIIB. The tumor was not amenable to surgical resection, therefore, he was started on concurrent chemoradiation with weekly carboplatin and paclitaxel for 5 weeks. …
