From a critical refugee studies orientation, our article redefines care within the context of myriad forms of state violence impacting Southeast Asian post-war refugee communities. Research reveals how harm is compounded at every step of Southeast Asian refugee journeys: war, forced displacement, resettlement, family separation, inherited health conditions, and generational trauma. How do we reckon with refugee trauma without conceding to it as an unchangeable fact of our lives? What knowledge might we gain by attending to the everyday work of survival in refugee communities? Abstract: Purpose: Thyroid nodules are uncommon in children and adolescents but carry an increased risk of malignancy when present. The Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) is an adult-validated ultrasound-based risk assessment providing a prediction of malignant potential for thyroid nodules, thereby guiding recommendations for fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Minimal data exist regarding the applicability of TI-RADS to predict malignancy in pediatric thyroid nodules. Malignant hyperthermia is a rare complication of general anesthesia involving the uncontrolled release of calcium when exposed to triggers such as depolarizing muscle relaxants or volatile anesthetics. It presents as a hypercatabolic skeletal muscle syndrome that results in tachycardia, hyperthermia, hypercapnia, muscle rigidity, acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, and hyperkalemia. This report presents the case of a 67-year-old female without a personal or family history of complications with anesthesia who experienced malignant hyperthermia during an elective hysterectomy. The patient was given multiple doses of dantrolene, with the ultimate resolution of her symptoms several days after surgery. She was discharged one week after surgery.

Objective: In this prospective US investigational device exemption trial, we assessed the safety and 1-year clinical outcomes of the Thoraflex Hybrid device (Terumo Aortic) for the frozen elephant trunk technique to repair the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending thoracic aorta.

Methods: For the trial, which involved 12 US sites, 65 patients without rupture were recruited into the primary study group, and 9 patients were recruited into the rupture group. Simultaneously diagnosing cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma, nodular goiter and parathyroid adenoma is a very rare event during clinical practice. We had the opportunity to find this unusual association on a female patient. While nodular goiter and parathyroid adenoma are more common diseases and easier to diagnose, identifying the etiology of a parapharyngeal space tumor remains a challenge and requires multiple imaging studies such as computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging or angiography. Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital disease that causes mirror transposition of the abdomino-thoracic structures. This study aims to rigorously map the arterial distribution of the colon in order to assess the implications of vascular patterns in surgical resection. Methods. Cadaveric dissections were performed to explore the arterial distribution (including collateral blood flow) of the colon. Open appendectomy has been the standard procedure for decades, whereas laparoscopic appendectomy is a newer, less-invasive method of removing the appendix. Inguinal hernias are very common. Their pathology and treatment are typically strait forward. Metastatic cancer can sometimes present as an inguinal hernia, but this presentation is often local metastasis.

Case Presentation

Herein we describe the case of a 68-year-old man who presented with a 2-month history of an inguinal hernia. Intraoperatively, the hernia sac was found to contain a mass attached to the spermatic cord, which was later determined to be a metastatic lesion from a locally advanced proximal transverse colon adenocarcinoma.

The induction of anesthesia using hypnotic sedatives, such as etomidate and midazolam, is common practice. Etomidate and midazolam are commonly employed in the induction of anesthesia in the septic patient population, each with its unique advantages and drawbacks. Hypoxia is a severe adverse event that is often associated with sedated endoscopy procedures, and bariatric patients have a significantly higher risk for complications related to oxygenation during sedation due to pathophysiological changes to the respiratory system. With a global prevalence of approximately 22.6%, OSA often remains undiagnosed, and increases the risk of cardiac and respiratory postoperative complications. Ticagrelor (Brilinta (R)) is the first reversibly binding oral P2Y12 receptor antagonist. It is used, mostly in combination with aspirin, in patients with acute coronary syndromes to reduce thrombosis. The manufacturer of ticagrelor recommends discontinuing it at least 5 days before any surgery when possible. While the effect of dose interruptions on the risk of thrombosis is not directly studied, it is important to understand the impact of skipping doses on ticagrelor's PK/PD profile for clinical-decision making. PURPOSE: To determine the impact of poor mental health on patient-reported and surgical outcomes after microdiscectomy.

METHODS: Patients ≥ 18 years who underwent a single-level lumbar microdiscectomy from 2014 to 2021 at a single academic institution were retrospectively identified. Patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) were collected at preoperative, three-month, and one-year postoperative time points. PROMs included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Visual Analog Scale Back and Leg (VAS Back and VAS Leg, respectively), and the mental and physical component of the short form-12 survey (MCS and PCS).
