Background: Sickle cell trait (SCT) is associated with an increase in muscle breakdown after strenuous exercise due to improper blood flow to active muscles. Evidence suggests that individuals with SCT can increase muscle breakdown during exercise by as much as 54%. This case outlines a 21-year-old African collegiate sprinter with SCT who reported feeling a “pop” in her right hamstring that caused her to stop running mid-race. Context: It is estimated that college football players sustain an average of 3 subconcussive blows to the head per game. Limited research has demonstrated that collegiate football players present with decreased static postural control, as measured using the Balance Error Scoring System, at the end of season compared to baseline. Interestingly, neurocognitive test scores in collegiate football players were not found to differ preseason, midseason and postseason. Injuries to the knee and lower body have occurred with athletes in the tie-down roping event. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify 10 questions that encompass some of the most common questions and concerns patients may have regarding lumbar decompression surgery. The selected questions were then posed to ChatGPT. Initial responses were then recorded, and no follow-up or clarifying questions were permitted. A right-hand-dominant female presented 5 weeks following a right middle finger intralesional cantharidin injection for a common wart by a dermatologist. The patient experienced progressive stiffness, blistering, swelling, pain, and ultimately, full-thickness skin necrosis surrounding the injection site. Careful debridement followed by a full-thickness skin graft was performed with no evidence of involvement of the germinal matrix or terminal extensor tendon. At the 7-month postoperative mark, the patient’s graft exhibited favorable healing and improved functionality that did not require further follow-up. Intralesional injection of cantharidin solutions for digital warts leads to progressive skin necrosis. Our case required prompt debridement and …

The objective of this study was to compare the planned resection angles to the verified intraoperative angles of femoral and tibial varus/valgus, tibial slope, and femoral flexion for each total knee performed using intramedullary (IM) cut guides for both distal femur and proximal tibia cuts. BACKGROUND: It has been argued that the use of artificial turf football fields in the National Football League (NFL) increases player injury risk compared with natural grass surfaces.

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to quantify the rate of lower extremity injuries occurring in NFL players on artificial turf compared with natural grass surfaces and characterize the time missed due to injury and proportion of injuries requiring surgery. Osteoclasts are multinucleated bone-resorbing cells, and their formation is tightly regulated to prevent excessive bone loss. However, the mechanisms by which osteoclast formation is restricted remain incompletely determined. Here, we found that sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2) functions as a negative regulator of osteoclast formation and inflammatory bone loss. Cholesterols and SREBP2, a key transcription factor for cholesterol biosynthesis, increased in the late phase of osteoclastogenesis. The ablation of SREBP2 in myeloid cells resulted in increased in vivo and in vitro osteoclastogenesis, leading to low bone mass. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search in electronic databases of PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library on 16 April 2023. Background: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a commonly diagnosed medical issue, yet there are little data assessing the relative morbidity of GTPS. We sought to characterize the morbidity on presentation of GTPS and compare it to that of patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis awaiting total hip arthroplasty. We hypothesized that patients with GTPS would have morbidity similar to or worse than that of patients with osteoarthritis.
