With increasing scrutiny on the condition of the nation's emergency services and emphasis on patient satisfaction and pay for performance, Emergency Departments (EDs) are examining ways to improve public perceptions of satisfaction and quality. A reduction in ED wait times and left without being seen (LWBS) volumes can have a significant impact on patient satisfaction scores. Research has extensively documented that a small number of Emergency Department (ED) patients make disproportionate use of emergency services (Okin et al., 2000). The term “Frequent Users” is used to describe patients who utilize ED services more than four times per year (Byrne et al., 2003). Frequent Users are often times patients with chronic medical, mental health, alcohol and drug problems, as well as other psychosocial issues (Fulde & Duffy, 2006). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the types of hydrocarbon ingested by children and identify factors associated with hydrocarbons ingestion.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was a hospital based case control study in which medical records of sixty seven children with hydrocarbon ingestion, admitted through emergency department between January 2001 to December 2005 of Aga Khan Hospital were reviewed. Variables such as age, sex, types of hydrocarbons, amount ingested, socioeconomic status, family size, number of children, type of containers, trend of ingestion during hot weather, length of stay at hospital along with the outcomes were evaluated.

Congenital malaria is a rare disorder which is difficult to interpret as most of the clinical features are similar to other diseases e.g. neonatal sepsis. It is defined as the presence of malarial parasites in the peripheral smear of the newborn from twenty four hours to seven days of life. We report 12 days old newborn who presented with high grade fever, reluctant to take feed, increasing pallor, jaundiced, dehydrated and lethargic. He was hypotensive, hypoglycemic, convulsing with hepatospleenomegally. He had a clear history of maternal fever (intermittent) for last three weeks and increasing pallor. Introduction:Our aim was to determine the characteristics of Patients presenting with syncope at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methods: A review of medical records was conducted retrospectively at the Department of Medicine, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Patients aged 16 and above, admitted from January 2000 to December 2005 with the diagnosis of syncope made by the attending physician were included.

Introduction:Our aim was to study the outcomes and predictors of in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among adult Patients at a tertiary care centre in Pakistan.
Methods:We conducted a retrospective chart review of all adult Patients (age > or =14 years), who underwent CPR following cardiac arrest, in a tertiary care hospital during a 5-year study period (June 1998 to June 2003). Early identification and management of pain was identified at the commencement of this study as a key area requiring research in emergency departments. Prolonged waiting times for analgesia especially, was highlighted in the National Institute of Clinical Studies emergency department collaborative in 2003. Many barriers exist for a patient to receive analgesia. In Western Australia this is compounded by the legislation which restricts prescribing rights for nurses. OBJECTIVE:

To examine clinical variables and outcomes in patients with out-of-hospital (unwitnessed) and emergency department (ED; witnessed) cardiac arrests at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi.

METHODS:

A prospective observational study was conducted to note that outcomes in patients with first attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the Emergency Department of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, between Jan. 2000 and Dec. 2000. Cardiac arrest was defined as absence of a palpable central pulse and apnoea. Return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival at hospital discharge were primary outcomes. Logistic regression was applied to determine predictors for ROSC.

Clinicians should be competent at contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Given the threat of emerging infectious diseases and biowarfare, there is a need to develop instructional methods on these topics. We have created a case-based exercise addressing sentinel case recognition, reporting, and containment. The workshop, conducted for medical students during their emergency medicine clerkship, incorporates the core competencies of systems-based practice, practice-based learning, and patient care. The workshop is held in a hospital conference room with the availability of internet, telephone, and other resources, simulating "real life." Objective:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical presentation of aplastic anemia as well as to assess the efficacy of Cyclosporin -A in patients with aplastic anemia.

Methodology:

This is a hospital based interventional study. During the three year study period, 44 children were enrolled. Mean age was 9.3 years and there was a male predominance.

Results:

Most common clinical presentation was anemia and bleeding. Four children died before therapy was started. Cyclosporin-A was started in 40 patients. Eleven patients died before completion of therapy and three patients were lost to follow-up. Out of 26 patients who …
