BACKGROUND: Anemia is a risk factor for increased transfusions. However, various definitions of anemia have been described in scientific literature and a consensus on how to appropriately diagnose anemia or who to preoperatively optimize is lacking. We aimed to compare multiple anemia definitions and evaluate if any threshold best predicts transfusion requirements and surgical outcomes following spinal fusion.

ACTA2 pathogenic variants altering arginine 179 cause childhood-onset strokes due to moyamoya disease (MMD)-like occlusions of the distal internal carotid arteries, but the mechanisms of pathogenesis are unknown and no preventive treatments exist. Here we show that Acta2R179C/+ smooth muscle cells (SMCs) fail to fully differentiate and maintain stem cell-like features, including increased migration and glycolytic flux compared to wildtype (WT) SMCs. Increasing mitochondrial respiration with nicotinamide riboside (NR) drives differentiation and decreases migration of Acta2R179C/+ SMCs. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) on long-term patient outcomes when used as an adjuvant to acetabular repair of the labrum.

METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were completed following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Included in the analysis were controlled studies which assessed functional outcomes via the International Hip Outcome Tool-33 (iHOT-33) 12 or 24 months after acetabular repair with BMAC adjunct. Four studies totaling 315 participants were analysed.

Background: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States (U.S.), ranking as second most prevalent overall. Despite many initiatives, screening rates remain low, especially among clinic patients without insurance. The lack of an evidence-based screening protocol exacerbates these issues and increases the risk of advanced cancer and death. Initial data showed that 0% of patients were screened according to recommended guidelines.

Purpose: The project implemented a standard screening protocol to increase colorectal cancer screening rates in a rural Alabama free clinic for patients ages 45-64 lacking insurance.

Becker nevus syndrome is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by the presence of a hyperpigmented patch of skin typically occurring on the upper trunk, often associated with hypertrichosis, and sometimes associated with musculoskeletal abnormalities ipsilateral to the nevus. Becker nevus syndrome can lead to breast hypoplasia. Unlike other forms of breast hypoplasia, treatment should begin before the completion of breast development. Due to the rarity of the disease, breast reconstruction in these patients has no gold-standard approach, and treatment is often delayed. To report the use of topical losartan as a potential treatment of acute bilateral central corneal stromal haze in a patient presenting with a syndrome resembling central toxic keratopathy (CTK).Patient and Clinical Findings:A 51-year-old man presented with clinically significant central corneal stromal haze bilaterally 6 days after a periorbital and facial contact dermatitis secondary to pesticide exposure. Guidelines for management of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) emphasize personalized care, patient engagement, and shared decision-making. Medications and cardiac rhythm management (CRM) devices are recommended with a high level of evidence. However, there are significant disparities: patients who could benefit from devices are frequently referred too late or not at all. Introduction: Chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) is one of the most common complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT). Recent studies indicate that desiccating stress by air-conditioning in transplantation wards increases the incidence of oGVHD. To test the hypothesis that experimental desiccating stress is a risk factor for oGVHD a mouse model of oGVHD was subjected to experimental desiccating stress.

Significance: This review investigates how radiation therapy (RT) increases the risk of delayed cardiovascular disease (CVD) in cancer survivors. Understanding the mechanisms underlying radiation-induced CVD is essential for developing targeted therapies to mitigate these effects and improve long-term outcomes for patients with cancer.

Recent Advances: Recent studies have primarily focused on metabolic alterations induced by irradiation in various cancer cell types. Background: Advances in care have led to improvements in survival for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer; however, the risk of early death remains high for certain cancers, particularly acute leukemias. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the similarity of tear proteins between experimental animals and humans to identify the most translational animal model for dry eye disease (DED).

Methods: Eleven species were selected for a structural and physicochemical comparison of healthy human tear fluid proteins involved in DED. Amino acid sequences were compared using BLAST. Protein primary structure, isoelectric point (pI) and grand average of hydropathicity (GRAVY) were determined using ExPASy and compared with humans.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as nivolumab, have become integral in treating metastatic malignancies by enhancing immune responses against tumors. However, they are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including cutaneous reactions. We report a case of persistent lichenoid dermatitis during therapy and eruptive keratoacanthomas (KAs) following the cessation of nivolumab.

Case Presentation

A 77-year-old Caucasian man presented with a subcutaneous melanoma on the left lateral chest, treated with excision followed by adjuvant nivolumab. MetS is a global health problem with risk factors that include obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and high triglycerides that predispose to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Background: Leprosy is a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Leprosy reactions, including erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), are induced by immune responses. ENL can cause neurological damage and deformities that result in disabilities. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the severity of ENL to help control the leprosy reactions.

Background: Snakehead fish (Channa striata, CS) has traditionally been used in Indonesia as a nutrient to promote wound healing.
