The purpose of this doctoral project was to create learning and evaluation tools for interscalene brachial plexus blocks (ISBPB) to be used by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and students in the Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). ISBPB is a regional anesthesia technique used to provide anesthesia for procedures of the shoulder and upper arm. CRNAs and students can use these tools to refresh their current knowledge and enhance their regional anesthesia skills.

PURPOSE: To develop a dual-level pattern tree to characterize visual field (VF) loss subtypes that can be used to better predict glaucoma progression and glaucoma polygenic risk scores (PRSs).

METHODS: This study included 113,030 patients from three datasets, each used for a specific purpose: (1) model training, (2) progression forecasting, and (3) PRS correlations. We applied archetypal analysis to cluster 24-2 VFs into trunk patterns and their branch patterns. Previous research has established links between vestibular function and cognitive processing, aging and cognitive function, and aging and vestibular function. Theories of cognitive resource allocation discuss how cognitive resources, such as attention, are devoted towards and divided between tasks when multitasking. This dual-task study, utilizing a balance task and a listening/cognitive task, across the young- and middle-aged adult age range, aimed to evaluate potential relationships between vestibular function, cognition, and age, and to examine how cognitive resources might be allocated under dual-task conditions.

BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) imaging is a crucial component to lung cancer radiotherapy planning and enables CT-ventilation-based functional avoidance planning to mitigate radiation toxicity. However, 4DCT scans are frequently impaired by acquisition artifacts that corrupt downstream analyses that depend on lung segmentation and deformable image registration, such as CT-ventilation and dose accumulation.

PURPOSE: This study develops 3D deep learning models to identify phase-binning artifacts at the voxel level and a heuristic, rule-based method to identify interpolation slices within 4DCT images.

Teclistamab, a bispecific antibody targeting B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), is effective in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM), but its impact on patients with soft tissue plasmacytomas is unclear. We studied 385 RRMM patients treated with teclistamab at 13 U.S. centers through September 2023, with follow-up to April 2024. Soft tissue plasmacytomas were classified as true extramedullary disease (EMD; not contiguous with bone) or paraskeletal plasmacytomas (PSK; contiguous with bone). Patients with the simultaneous presence of both were classified as true-EMD, reflecting its adverse prognosis. Of those, 109 (28%) had true EMD, 33 (9%) had PSK, and 243 (63%) had …

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative follow-up after PitNET resection is essential for monitoring tumor recurrence and endocrinological deficits. Despite advances in telehealth, loss to follow-up remains a persistent challenge across neurosurgical patients. This study aims to identify factors to identify patients are at higher risk of being lost to follow-up after surgery. BACKGROUND: Neutrophils contribute to the pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases. While the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with disease activity in adult dermatomyositis, its clinical utility in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is unknown.

METHODS: Demographic, medication use, autoantibody profile, disease activity markers, and laboratory data from 97 JDM patients was collected using retrospective chart review. Patients were age-stratified (0–9 vs. 9–21 years of age), as white blood cell count stabilizes at 9 years. The relationships between NLR with JDM disease activity measures were analyzed using spearman’s correlation.

This series of FactFinders presents a brief summary of the evidence and outlines recommendations regarding minimizing risks with radiofrequency neurotomy procedures. The evidence in support of the following facts is presented: (1) While data on the safety of radiofrequency neurotomy in patients with implanted devices are limited, the procedure can likely be performed safely with careful adherence to best practices and manufacturer recommendations. (2) Basivertebral nerve radiofrequency neurotomy can be performed safely and effectively at the L3 through S1 vertebral levels. Scrutiny of preprocedural imaging may minimize risk. Therefore, early detection of biomarkers at the onset of the disease is essential for early diagnosis. This study presents an electrochemical biosensor designed for the detection of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in human plasma, incorporating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to enhance signal sensitivity. Introduction: This study assessed the validity of a non-immersive body motion tracking system (TRAZER) as an alternative to using Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)-based motion capture (MyoMotion) for lower extremity kinematic analysis. Methods: Twenty healthy participants (10 females, 10 males) with a mean age of 24.03 years (range: 20-33 years) and a mean BMI of 25.15 kg/m² (range: 18.45-32.23 kg/m²) performed double and single-leg squats. INTRODUCTION: Available data on robotic ureteral reconstruction procedures is concentrated from high volume centers. To better understand generalizability of success, we used a network of healthcare organizations (HCOs) to evaluate surgical success following robotic-assisted pyeloplasty (RP), ureteral reimplantation (RR), and ureteroureterostomy/ureteroplasty (RU).

CONTEXT: In animal models, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is associated with increased Roux limb intestinal glucose uptake that may contribute to early metabolic benefits, though prospective clinical studies are lacking. BACKGROUND: With growing evidence pointing towards the potential of integrative oncology modalities (IOM) in addressing cancer and cancer-treatment related symptoms, research on IOM utilization and implementation is warranted. This study examines global stakeholder perspectives on integrative oncology (IO) utilization for supportive cancer care.

METHODS: Members of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) completed a survey on the utilization of IOM for supportive cancer care. Background/Objectives: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and the role of the transcription factor SPDEF remains controversial. We aimed to clarify the prognostic value of SPDEF, explore demographic and molecular correlates of its expression, and investigate potential regulatory mechanisms underlying its dysregulation. Methods: Genomic and clinical data for 1218 breast cancer tumors were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). SPDEF mRNA expression was compared across intrinsic subtypes, age, and race, and prognostic significance was evaluated by Kaplan–Meier analysis. BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive cancer from the serosal membranes of the abdominal cavity. In the United States, MPM accounts for about 10-15% of all mesothelioma cases, and translates into approximately 600 new cases diagnosed annually. It is typically diagnosed in Caucasian individuals, and while asbestos exposure is a well-established risk factor for pleural mesothelioma, its association with peritoneal mesothelioma remains less clear. Clinical symptoms of MPM, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and weight loss, overlap with other gastrointestinal disorders, which often leads to delayed diagnosis. Arthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint is a prevalent and often disabling condition for many older adults. The diagnosis is typically established through a comprehensive patient history, physical examination, and confirmatory radiographs. Nonsurgical management with splinting and anti-inflammatory medication has demonstrated effectiveness. Several surgical options have proven effectiveness for those who fail nonsurgical management. Surgical options include silicone implantation, resection arthroplasty, tendon interposition, ligament reconstruction, denervation, and joint implant arthroplasty. In the following review, we will elaborate upon the array of therapeutic approaches, culminating in the delineation of our preferred method.

Sexually transmitted infections, e.g., Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG), present with similar signs/symptoms and are often treated empirically due to delays in receiving diagnostic test results. This study evaluated the clinical performance of the Cobas Liat CT/NG/MG nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) in detecting these pathogens in a point-of-care (POC) setting. This non-interventional, multicenter study recruited symptomatic/asymptomatic participants from 13 geographically diverse POC sites across the USA. Research on the relationship between integrative oncology (IO) programs and dispensing of chemotherapy agents and supportive care drugs, and hospitalization rates is limited. The present study examined these outcomes in chemotherapy-treated patients with cancer, comparing patients highly adherent to integrative care (high-AIC) to those with low adherence (low-AIC). Data from patients with cancer treated with taxane and/or platinum-based agents participating in an ongoing prospective, controlled pragmatic trial were examined retrospectively. PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review provides a detailed overview of the specifics of presentation, diagnosis, and management of upper and lower urinary tract stone disease for individuals with spina bifida.

RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies highlight the significant burden of stone disease for spina bifida patients. Individuals with spina bifida require lifelong urologic care. They are more likely to have stone disease and have complications from management. This is a particularly salient issue for patients who have undergone bladder augmentation.
