Unlocking Hope: Mirtazapine's Promise In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment, Rebecca K. Hicks, Iram Kingson, Jordan Gaal, Suzanne Holroyd
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric condition characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are first-line treatments for OCD, a significant proportion of patients remain refractory to these interventions. Mirtazapine, an atypical antidepressant with unique pharmacological properties, has emerged as a potential adjunctive therapy for treatment-resistant OCD. This review synthesizes existing evidence regarding the efficacy and safety profile of mirtazapine in OCD management. We analyze clinical trials, observational studies, and case reports, distinguishing high- vs. low-quality evidence, and discuss mechanisms underlying mirtazapine's therapeutic effects. Additionally, …
A Review Of Praziquantel Resistance In Schistosomes And The Future Of Schistosomiasis Control, Gabriela G. Eastham
A Review Of Praziquantel Resistance In Schistosomes And The Future Of Schistosomiasis Control, Gabriela G. Eastham
Senior Honors Theses
Schistosomiasis is a group of both acute and chronic parasitic trematode infections of the genus Schistosoma. Praziquantel (PZQ) has been the drug of choice to treat schistosomiasis for decades. Though it is effective against all three clinically relevant species, heavy reliance on PZQ has led to concerns of schistosome resistance, especially in areas that have implemented this drug in mass drug administration (MDA) programs. Although there is currently insufficient evidence to conclude that schistosomes are becoming resistant to PZQ on a large scale, other control methods are a necessity to best treat and eliminate schistosomiasis. This article summarizes the …
Comparison Of Efficacy Between Thai-Made Replacement Parts (Smart Litho Plus) And Standard Electromagnetic Shock Wave Systems For Renal Stone Treatment, Supoj Ratchanon, Patranuch Noppakulsati
Comparison Of Efficacy Between Thai-Made Replacement Parts (Smart Litho Plus) And Standard Electromagnetic Shock Wave Systems For Renal Stone Treatment, Supoj Ratchanon, Patranuch Noppakulsati
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Abstract
Background: Urinary stones are one of the most common urological problems in Thailand. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is one of the most frequently used treatments due to its noninvasive nature and widespread availability. However, the effectiveness of lithotripters with power sources produced in Thailand (Smart Litho Plus) compared with that of standard machines is poorly established. Therefore, we aim to compare the efficacy of Thai-made replacement parts with that of standard electromagnetic shock wave systems for the treatment of renal stones.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study involving 121 patients with renal stones across three sites …
E-Cigarettes: An Up To Date Review And Discussion Of The Controversy, Zachary Sanford, Lynne J. Goebel Md
E-Cigarettes: An Up To Date Review And Discussion Of The Controversy, Zachary Sanford, Lynne J. Goebel Md
Internal Medicine
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) present a novel method for nicotine delivery that is reportedly advantageous when compared to traditional cigarette usage. Manufacturers and consumers claim reduced chemical exposure, decreased symptom profiles, and efficacy in smoking reduction and cessation greater than conventional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT). However these products present new challenges and concerns to legislators, clinicians, and public health advocates. Questions of authority in state and federal legislation, establishing product quality control, assessing long-term studies on e-cigarettes and quantifying usefulness in harm reduction represent only a portion of the many unanswered topics being discussed. The purpose of this article is to …
