Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is common in Saudi Arabia, with a prevalence rate of 2.3%. It is an expensive disease to manage due to the extensive utilization of healthcare resources, including hospital readmissions, extended hospital stays, and frequent emergency department visits, which cost approximately $395 million annually in U.S. dollars. The primary objective of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review of healthcare utilization and cost of patients with SCD, following the PICO framework and PRISMA guidelines. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is most effective the faster it is able to be administered to a patient that has been affected by stroke. A Stroke Code is a strategy that acute care facilities implement to reduce the time from diagnosing a stroke to administering tPA. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disease and has been studied with the aim of finding a curative measure for decades. FH is caused by mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) resulting in defects in LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C)-receptor mediated endocytosis and development of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). Here I describe the use of a corrected and non-corrected LDLR FH cell model to investigate receptor-mediated endocytosis and statin effects. For these studies, we reprogrammed FH fibroblast cells to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and confirmed their pluripotency and ability to differentiate to hepatocyte-like cells (HLC).
