Advocating For Occupational Therapy Intervention With In-House Athletics, Jatia Littles, Cynthia Haynes
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Occupational therapists (OT) have the opportunity to work with athletes by outsourcing through orthopedic centers with professional leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) (Jobs in Sports, 2022) but rarely do you see OTs within the sports complex working in-house. Although many studies go into great detail on the benefits of occupational therapy during the rehabilitation process, there are only a limited number of studies that explore occupational therapy intervention in athletics (Andreas et al., 2021). This project designed and implemented an occupational therapy-focused advocacy project that involves informing interprofessional sports faculty on the benefits of OTs being a …
Herniated Nucleus Pulposus Radiculopathy In Athletes, Elizabeth G. Massel
Herniated Nucleus Pulposus Radiculopathy In Athletes, Elizabeth G. Massel
Capstone Showcase
Herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP), commonly referred to as intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation, is the second most common cause of neck and back pain, and most common cause of radiculopathy. The purpose of this CME article is to provide guidance on the medical management and secondary prevention of HNP in athletic populations, and highlight the pathophysiological process of mechanical overload putting athletes at a proportionately higher risk of the disease. It will address the unique pathophysiology of overuse-related HNP, as opposed to underuse, with the mechanical overload on vertebral discs associated with many sports. It will also review, with more emphasis …
Anatomy Of The Ankle And Ankle Injuries In Athletes, Isabelle G. West
Anatomy Of The Ankle And Ankle Injuries In Athletes, Isabelle G. West
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this project was to learn about the anatomy of the ankle joint, explore common ankle injuries in athletes, and research how they are treated overall and in a physical therapy setting. To do so, a dissection of the ankle joint was completed with Mrs. Kara Coffman-Rea in the cadaver lab as well as an exploration of plastinated models. Additionally, a literature review of current research on the ankle was completed. Though many structures of the ankle joint were identified through dissection, the focus of the literature review is on the structures of the lateral ankle and the …
