An important component of precision medicine-the use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to guide lifelong healthcare-is electronic decision support to inform drug choice and dosing. To achieve this, automated identification of genetic variation in genes involved in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and response (ADMER) is required. CYP2D6 is a major enzyme for drug bioactivation and elimination. CYP2D6 activity is predominantly governed by genetic variation; however, it is technically arduous to haplotype. Neuropeptides play important physiological functions during distinct behaviors such as arousal, learning, memory, and reproduction. However, the role of local, extrahypothalamic neuropeptide signaling in shaping synapse formation and neuronal plasticity in the brain is not well understood. Here, we characterize the spatiotemporal expression profile of the neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and its receptor CRHR1 in the mouse OB throughout development. We found that CRH-expressing interneurons are present in the external plexiform layer, that its cognate receptor is expressed by granule cells, and show that both CRH and CRHR1 expression enriches in the postnatal period when olfaction becomes important towards olfactory-related …

The ovary is a dynamic organ that responds to many hormonal signals. When these hormonal signals are disrupted, ovarian dysfunction can occur. One such example is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS patients suffer from high levels of testosterone. Excess testosterone may misregulate genes in the ovary and disrupt ovarian function. The Claudin (Cldn) 3 and Cldn11 genes have been shown to be regulated by androgens in the testis, while studies in ovarian cancer cells suggests a coregulatory mechanism for the expressions of Cldn3 and Cldn4 in the ovary. Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) still remains a difficult disorder to treat. TBI has been associated to chronic neuroinflammation and a high risk for neurodegenerative disorders. Since 2001 between ten to twenty percent of all deployed military members have suffered a combat-related TBI. There are a variety of traditional treatments for psoriasis (e.g. topical medications, biologics) that for many, are effective in combating the disease. Protein-derived cofactors are redox and catalytic centers that are generally formed by the posttranslational modifications of one or more amino acids. An important class of these cofactors are the quinones derived from tyrosine and tryptophan. Amongst redox proteins, it has been known till now that oxidases either contain a flavin or a tyrosylquinone cofactor, whereas tryptophylquinone ones are present within the dehydrogenases. In recent times, oxidases from a marine bacterium, Marinomonas mediterranea, have been shown to possess the latter. The Snf2/Swi2 ATPases Rad5 and Rad16 have been shown to play vital roles in a number of DNA repair pathways. In both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and human cell lines, Rad5 homologs (SHPRH, HLTF) have been shown to function in DNA double strand break (DSB) repair along with pathways that repair damage after replication. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to find whether maternal visceral tissue (VAT) or subcutaneous fat tissue (SCFT) thicknesses are associated with CRP, HbA1c, lipid, and biochemical parameters in the first trimester of pregnancy. Materials and methods: Ninety pregnant women were enrolled. Body mass index (BMI), VAT, and SCFT were measured. The best cut-off points for grouping subjects were found to be 4 cm for VAT and 2 cm for SCFT. Venous blood samples were collected. Results: VAT was higher than 4 cm in all cases with high BMIs. Background/aim: Mucormycosis is a rare invasive fungal infection most commonly encountered in the immunocompromised host. We analyzed 51 adult patients treated for mucormycosis between 2003 and 2013 and recorded at a tertiary university hospital in Turkey. Materials and methods: We examined the following data for all patients: age, sex, predisposing disease, symptoms, treatment, surgical procedure, concomitant infections, intensive care requirement, and outcomes. Results: During the study period 51 cases of mucormycosis were documented; 54.9% of the patients were female. The mean age was 44.2 ± 18.2 years. Background/aim: Pneumocardiography (PNCG) is the recording method of cardiac-induced tracheal air flow and pressure pulsations in the respiratory airways. PNCG signals reflect both the lung and heart actions and could be accurately recorded in spontaneously breathing anesthetized rats. Nonlinear analysis methods, including the Lyapunov exponent, can be used to explain the biological dynamics of systems such as the cardiorespiratory system. Background/aim: Our objective was to identify the antioxidant properties of honeybee products from Turkey, chestnut honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly, and their hepatoprotective activity against CCl4-induced hepatic damage in rats. Materials and methods: Animals were fed with honeybee products for 7 days following CCl4 injection. Development of liver damage and oxidative stress were monitored by measuring the activities of the enzymes alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Materials and methods: Thirteen physically active women (18?25 years) with a regular menstrual cycle were recruited. Background/aim: Macrolide and lincosamide antibiotics are used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections, especially for penicillin-allergic patients. In the present study, we evaluate the prevalence of resistance to macrolide and lincosamide antibiotics among staphylococci isolates. Materials and methods: A total of 200 staphylococcal clinical isolates were collected from January 2012 to April 2013. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of erythromycin and clindamycin were determined by agar dilution method. An erythromycin-clindamycin induction test was performed for isolates that were only resistant to erythromycin. Background/aim: To investigate whether focal high maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) determined by 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) imaging is correlated with proliferation index in the colorectal region. Materials and methods: SUVmax values of 31 colorectal neoplasms that were incidentally detected during PET-CT examination were compared to dysplasia degree, histopathologic diagnosis, and immunohistochemical expression of the Ki-67 proliferation marker. Results: Statistically significant correlations were found between SUVmax and Ki-67 proliferation index, dysplasia degree, and histopathologic diagnosis.
