Adenovirus (Ad) precursor to the terminal protein (pTP) plays an essential roles in the viral DNA

replication. Ad pTP serves as a primer for the synthesis of a new DNA strand during the initiation

step of replication. In addition, Ad pTP forms organized spherical replication foci on the nuclear

matrix (NM) and anchors the viral genome to the NM. Here we identified the interferon inducible

gene product 1-8D (Inid) as a pTP binding protein by using a two-hybrid screen of a HeLa cDNA

The present invention provides a method to detect the presence of a microorganism or agent in an animal. The method encompasses placement of devices at various locations where the animal resides so as to induce the animal to initiate contact with the device. As a result of this contact, the animal deposits various microorganisms and agents on the device. The device is then tested for the presence of the particular microorganism or agent of interest.

Antimicrobial Activity And Characteristics Of Bacteriocins Produced By Vaginal Lactobacilli, Şengül Alpay Karaoğlu, Faruk Aydi̇n, S. Sirri Kiliç, Ali̇ O. Kiliç

The aim of this study is to test the production of bacteriocin in vaginal Lactobacilli and determining the characterization and antibacterial activity of this bacteriocin. For this reason 100 Lactobacillus strains were isolated and identified from vaginal swab samples of 75 women who attended obstetric and gynecology clinics. It was determined that six of 100 Lactobacillus strains produced bacteriocin. The antibacterial activity of bacteriocins was examined and found to be effective on vaginal L. gasseri, L. acidophilus, Gardnerella vaginalis ATCC 14018 and Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 10145. One hundred liver fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) specimens obtained from 42 patients with hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), 38 patients with metastatic adenocarcinomas (MAC) and 20 patients with non-malignant liver disease (control group) were studied. Liver specimens were stained with an immunoperoxidase method using a monoclonal antibody to Ki-67 (MIB1). Ki-67 antigen was visualised in cold acetone, and a fresh liver needle aspiration cytology specimen using antibodies was used to identify proliferating hepatocytes. In this study, quantification levels were investigated to define alterations in the expression of the FLI1 gene on acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), which is characterized by a reciprocal t(15,17) translocation of fusing the PML gene to the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RAR alpha) gene. The FLI1 gene plays an important role in several signal transduction pathways, and is involved in the normal regulation of myeloid hematopoiesis and leukomogenesis. Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibody response following immunization with plasmid vector DNA containing the hepatitis B virus core antigen (HBcAg) gene of a hepatitis B virus (HBV) isolated from a patient in Turkey. A HBcAg gene fragment was cloned into a pcDNA 3 eukaryotic expression vector. After confirmation of the cloning of the HBcAg gene, the expressing vector based HBcAg was used in DNA immunization experiments. We have modified a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure for homocysteine assay using 7-fluoro-2, 1, 3-benzoxadiazole-4-sulfonamide (ABD-F) pre-column derivatization. In this study, the thiol compounds were liberated from plasma proteins by reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol (BME) and derivatized with a thiol-specific fluoregenic marker, ABD-F. The derivatives were separated by reversed-phase HPLC on a Hypersil C 18 column (4.6 x 150 mm; 5 µ) using isocratic elution with 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 6.0 containing 8% methanol and fluorescence detection. Accurate, fast and economical urinary iodine measurement is very important in diagnosing iodine deficiency disorders. The urinary iodine determination method using ammonium persulfate digestion based on the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction was optimized and modified to kinetic and automated assay. Ammonium persulfate digestion was performed at +95 ºC in a water-bath to ± 0.1 ºC precision. The performance of both the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction at 37 ºC and its kinetic measurement at 340 nm was tested in a random access automated analyzer. In this study we investigated nitric oxide metabolites nitrate+nitrite and lipid peroxidation product (malonyldialdehyde: MDA) related to the pathogenesis of eclampsia and intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) pregnancy. Plasma nitrate+nitrite levels were higher in the eclamptic (31.6 ± 16.7 µmol/L p < 0.001) and IUGR (24.3 ± 9.5 µmol/L p < 0.005) groups than in the control group (18.8 ± 6.9 µmol /L). Plasma MDA levels were higher in the eclamptic group (5.5 ± 2.5 nmol/ml (p < 0.05) but not significantly different in the IUGR (3.4 ± 2.4 nmol/ml p > 0.05) group than control group (3.0 ± 1.3 nmol/ml). In addition, the plasma nitrite+nitrate and MDA levels in the eclamptic group were higher than in the IUGR group (p < 0.05). These variations could play different roles in the pathogenesis of eclampsia and IUGR pregnancy.

Several factors may be responsible for the high prevalence of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus, including alterations in reverse cholesterol transport. In the present study, the activity of plasma lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and the cholesteryl ester transfer rate, and concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 11 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1), 42 patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2) and compared with those in age-matched control groups (Control I, n = 14; and Control II, n = 29, respectively).
