Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation is being carried out for rapidly increasing numbers of patients. Survival probabilities have increased progressively, and most patients return to productive lives. However, delayed complications do occur. Here, we review the incidence and spectrum of post-transplant malignancies, discuss risk factors and mechanisms, and assess the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.

The effects of fasting on humans have not been adequately investigated. Ramadan fasting is a great opportunity for scientific research due to its peculiar nature. With this in mind, we conducted research on the effects of Ramadan on stroke, which is one of the most common causes of death in adults. Patients hospitalized solely for ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage were evaluated retrospectively. This study examines whether wide needle biopsy (Tru-cut) possesses advantages as an alternative method to open biopsy. This study was performed on 40 patients with suspicious intra-jaw lesions. The hematopoietic stem cell transplant activity survey of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) represents a novel modern tool in health care management. Introduced in 1990, it captures annual numbers of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) by indication, donor type and stem cell source from each individual European transplant team. Supplemented by demographical data and economic factors, team density and transplant rates can be calculated and the impact of economics on HSCT rates can be assessed. Our purpose was to investigate whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) has a specific mucosal appearance. Eighty-eight (female / male: 53/35) patients included in the study underwent endoscopy to determine the macroscopic appearance of their gastric mucosa. Biopsies taken from the antrum, incisura angularis and corpus of each patient were stained with toluidine blue and examined for Hp under a light microscope. Thirty were Hp negative and 58 Hp positive. Thirty-six percent of the patients had normal mucosa, 21.59% had spotty erythema in the antrum, 31.81% had a mosaic pattern in the antrum and/or corpus and 10.23% had acute duodenal ulcer. We compared Apgar scores and umblical arterial and venous blood gas samples of infants following the application of general anesthesia or lumbar epidural anesthesia during cesarean section. Sixty-two pregnant women whose babies were to be delivered at term by cesarean section were recruited for this study and randomized to receive either general anesthesia (GA) (n = 31), or lumbar epidural anesthesia (EA) (n = 31). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of enuresis, constipation and enuresis associated with constipation in school children aged 5-9 years living in Malatya Municipality, Turkey. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. All elementary schools in Malatya Municipality with kindergarten and preparatory classes took part in the study. All parents of the children aged 5-9 years enrolled in these schools were given a questionnaire. Completion of the questionnaire was voluntary. Of the parents, 1377 completed the questionnaire and these were evaluated. Overall enuresis frequency was 9.5%. Enuresis frequency was significantly higher among boys (11.2%) compared to girls …

This study was carried out to evaluate the level of physical nicotine dependence in medical students and physicians working in the Lakes region, Turkey. The standardized Fagerström test of nicotine dependence questionnaire was given to 135 physicians and 61 medical students who smoked daily. The rate of daily smoking was 28.4% in medical students and 33.7% in physicians. Average Fagerström test for nicotine dependence scores were 3.98 ± 2.69 for medical students, 3.69 ± 3.05 for general practitioners, 3.06 ± 2.23 for research assistants and 3.34 ± 2.88 for specialist physicians. This study was carried out on 401 physicians who work in the Lakes region, Turkey, to assess their behaviour and attitude towards smoking. A questionnaire based on guidelines and standardised questions prepared by the World Health Organization was given to physicians. Of the physicians, 136 (33.9%) had never tried to smoke in their lives and 45 (11.2%) were former smokers. Of the 220 (54.9%) physicians who had smoked for at least 6 months in their lifetime, 46 (11.5%) were ex-smokers. BACKGROUND: Several physiological adaptations occur in the respiratory muscles in rodent models of elastase-induced emphysema. Although the contractile properties of the diaphragm are altered in a way that suggests expression of slower isoforms of myosin heavy chain (MHC), it has been difficult to demonstrate a shift in MHCs in an animal model that corresponds to the shift toward slower MHCs seen in human emphysema. Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyses the S- methylation of aromatic and sulphydryl compounds known as the thiopurines. These therapeutic agents are used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and organ transplant recipients.

Erythrocyte TPMT activity is polymorphic and patients with intermediate or deficient TPMT are at significant risk for excessive toxicity after receiving ‘standard’ doses of thiopurine medications. The activity of TPMT is inherited as an autosomal co-dominant trait. Several mutations in the TPMT gene have been described that correlate with a low activity phenotype. Studies in animals and humans suggest that these dietary compounds have a very low oral bioavailability. However, the reason behind this limited bioavailability as well as the mechanisms underlying absorption is not clearly understood. A mathematical model for a neural control system of ant locomotion was developed. Contrast-based detectors using excitation and inhibition were tuned to specific contrast orientations. A control system using multiple orientation contrast detectors was then developed and optimized for a model ant, which could move via a biased random walk. The system allowed sufficient control to guide the ant through various mazes.

Nearly all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are acquired mucosally, and the gut-associated lymphoid tissues are important sites for early virus replication. Thus, vaccine strategies designed to prime virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses that home to mucosal compartments may be particularly effective at preventing or containing HIV infection. This volume adjustment is accomplished by osmolyte translocation toward the extracellular space to reach a new osmotic equilibrium. Molecules involved in this homeostatic mechanism have been broadly classified into two categories: organic and inorganic osmolytes. Inorganic osmolytes comprise mainly the intracellular ions K⁺ and Cl^–. Cell swelling–induced activation of separate K⁺ and Cl^– channels has been described in most preparations. The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2J2 arachidonic acid epoxygenase gene was down-regulated at a pre-translational level in human hepatoma-derived HepG2 cells incubated in a hypoxic environment; under these conditions, the expression of c-Jun and c-Fos mRNA and protein was increased. The 5′-upstream region of the CYP2J2 gene was isolated by amplification of a 2341 bp fragment and putative regulatory elements that resembled activator protein-1 (AP-1)-like sequences were identified. From transient transfection analysis, c-Jun was found to strongly activate a CYP2J2–luciferase reporter construct, but co-transfection with plasmids encoding c-Fos or c-Fos-related antigens, Fra-1 and -2, abrogated reporter activity. Interstrand cross-links (ICLs) make up a unique class of DNA lesions in which both strands of the double helix are covalently joined, precluding strand opening during replication and transcription. The repair of DNA ICLs has become a focus of study since ICLs are recognized as the main cytotoxic lesion inflicted by an array of alkylating compounds used in cancer treatment. As is the case for double-strand breaks, a damage-free homologous copy is essential for the removal of ICLs in an error-free manner. The coordinated regulation of chemokine responsiveness plays a critical role in the development of humoral immunity. After antigen challenge and B cell activation, the emerging plasma cells (PCs) undergo CXCL12-induced chemotaxis to the bone marrow, where they produce Ab and persist. Here we show that PCs, but not B cells or T cells from lupus-prone NZM mice, are deficient in CXCL12-induced migration. PC unresponsiveness to CXCL12 results in a marked accumulation of PCs in the spleen of mice, and a concordant decrease in bone marrow PCs. Unlike normal mice, in NZM mice, a majority of the splenic PCs are long-lived. …

Signaling through G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediates numerous airway smooth muscle (ASM) functions including contraction, growth, and "synthetic" functions that orchestrate airway inflammation and promote remodeling of airway architecture. In this review we provide a comprehensive overview of the GPCRs that have been identified in ASM cells, and discuss the extent to which signaling via these GPCRs has been characterized and linked to distinct ASM functions.
