Telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein, has been described as an essential component of highly proliferative cells, which stabilizes the telomeres and avoids cellular senescence. Telomerase has been identified in various embryonic cell stages, hematopoietic cells, and in >85% of tumor tissue biopsies analyzed. The ability to measure the potential to proliferate successfully could provide an objective measure of an embryo's quality. Chitosan, a derivative of the natural polysaccharide chitin, is known for its biocompatibility and metal-binding capacity. The aim of this study was to combine these two properties of chitosan and investigate its potential as a new iron (III) ion (ferric ion) adsorbing agent. The development of a safe and orally active iron chelating agent is especially important for the treatment of thalassemics. In this study, the physicochemical parameters affecting the ability of chitosan flakes to adsorb iron (III) ions were studied by complexometric titration. Identification of 78 Candida isolates was carried out by a commercial Fungichrom test kit, the reliability of which was further confirmed by conventional biochemical tests and the API 20C kit. Differentiation between different Candida species was also observed when sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of whole cell proteins was used. The most frequently isolated species of yeast from vaginal swabs obtained from patients was Candida albicans, which accounted for 39 of 78 (50.00%) of the isolates from women in Ankara. MUC2 is a well-identified intestinal mucin, present predominantly in the small intestine and colon. It is known that pathological alterations in the expression and composition of this mucin occur in several serious diseases related to epithelial surfaces, e.g., carcinoma and colitis ulcerosa. The success rate of a repaired torn meniscus is not more than 70%. Gene transfer to healing soft tissues appears to be a feasible method for manipulating the healing process. In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of gene transfer to meniscal tissue we tried to transfer a reporter gene ( Echerichia coli, b-galactosidase gene) by using HVJ-liposome mediated gene transfer. The protective roles of low-dose dopamine and mannitol infusion in the renal function of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery were compared in 36 patients by measuring urine N-acetyl-\beta-D- glucosaminidase activity, serum and urinary creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and urine output. The patients were randomly selected and received a continuous infusion of dopamine, 3 µg/kg/min (Group I), mannitol, 1 mg/kg/h (Group II), no medication (Group III) before the induction of anaesthesia. Our aim was to prepare antibiotic loaded rods with biotechnologically produced biodegradable polymers and use them in the treatment of osteomyelitis by providing a high local dose of antibiotic at the infected site. For that purpose, first the production of PHB and its copolymers (P(3HB- co-3HV) and P(3HB- co-4HB)) by Alcaligenes latus and Alcaligenes eutrophusin the shake-flask cultures and in a fed-batch fermenter and their purification and characterization were performed. Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the results of acute cerebral anoxia in adults as a reversal sign. Methods: We retrospectively examined the CT and MR images of 9 patients in a vegetative state due to acute prolonged anoxia. Each of them had at least one MRI and 4 CT exams 6-12 hours, 10-14 days, 6-8 months and 1 year after the anoxic event. Calcium And Phosphate Excretion In Preeclampsia, Pervi̇n Vural, Cemi̇l Akgül, Mukaddes Canbaz

In preeclampsia, alterations in renal function, electrolyte and water metabolism are common findings. Recent studies have suggested that preeclampsia is associated with hypocalciuria. A total of 59 women were included in the present study, 15 of whom were nonpregnant (NP) healthy women, 20 normotensive pregnant women (NTP), and 24 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (PEP). We compared the three groups in terms of calcium and phosphate excretion, and some parameters of renal function such as serum urea, creatinine and creatinine clearance. Urinary calcium and phosphate levels in the PEP group were significantly lower than in the NP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively) and NTP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively). The serum urea levels were higher in the PEP group than in the NP and NTP (p< 0.001) groups. The same pattern of increase in the PEP group was valid for serum creatinine concentrations as compared with the NP (p< 0.01) and NTP (p< 0.001) levels. The glomerular filtration rate measured by creatinine clearance was lower in preeclamptic women than in normotensive pregnant women (p< 0.01). Patients with preeclampsia had significantly lower (p< 0.001) excretion of calcium than the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.001). Likewise, the phosphate levels were lower in women with preeclampsia than in the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.01). There was no correlation between parameters of renal function and calcium or phosphate excretion. Hypocalciuria and hypophosphateuria were found to be important features of severe preeclampsia and probably indirectly are related to the altered renal function seen in toxemia of pregnancy.

Secondary echinococcosis is an important complication of hydatid disease and is not rare in the peritoneal cavity. However, the frequency of secondary hydatidosis in the pleural cavity is not very well known. The Effect Of Halothane On The Enzymatic Activity Of Mouse Liver And Erythrocyte Glucose-6- Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, Güneş T. Yüregi̇r, İlhan Tuncer

The effects of repeated halothane anaesthesia on 6-10 week old male, Mus musculus albino mice weighing 29-32 g were studied. Halothane, a widely used anaesthetic, is known to be metabolised in the liver to toxic intermediates through cytochrome P4502E1 (CYP2E1). During the first week of repeated dosage, glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity decreased in both erythrocytes and liver cells, and during this time, livers increased significantly in weight and suffered histopathological damage, the damage increasing with the dosage of halothane, in the range 0.25-1.0 ml twice daily. The aim of this study was to determine PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) and Ki-67 expression of various soft tissue sarcomas (STS) immunohisto-chemically and to correlate with the histologic grade of these tumors. Retrospectively 185 cases of STS were re-examined. Of the 185 cases, 35 primary STS cases which were localized in the extremities and trunk wall were included in this study. Anti-PCNA and Anti-Ki-67 monoclonal antibodies were applied to the paraffin sections of tumor tissues immunohistochemically. This prospective study was designed to investigate lymphocyte subsets in acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN). Peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled CD3, CD4, CD8, CD14, CD19, CD45, CD56, CD45RA and CDW29 monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry. Twenty patients aged 14-22 years who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for APSGN were evaluated during the 1st and 12th weeks of the of disease. Twenty-four age-matched healthy subjects served as controls. Autism is a severe developmental disorder that was first described by Kanner in 1943. It is characterised by four major criteria: marked social deficits, delay in language development, a restricted range of stereotyped repetitive behaviours and onset of the disease within the first three years of life. The last decade of research has provided support for a strong genetic basis in the aetiology of autism. Firstly, a number of genetic conditions, such as fragile X syndrome, chromosome 15 anomalies and tuberous sclerosis, have been associated with autism. The transition from a planktonic (free-swimming) existence to growth attached to a surface in a biofilm occurs in response to environmental factors, including the availability of nutrients. We show that the catabolite repression control (Crc) protein, which plays a role in the regulation of carbon metabolism, is necessary for biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using phase-contrast microscopy, we found that a crc mutant only makes a dispersed monolayer of cells on a plastic surface but does not develop the dense monolayer punctuated by microcolonies typical of the wild-type strain.
