Alloimmunization can be a significant complication of transfusion therapy in patients with thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies. The aim of this study was to investigate Rh and Kell antigens in patients with thalassemia major and in donors in Turkey. A total of 3061 donors and 155 thalassemic patients from three different blood donation centers in Turkey were the subjects of this study. Alcoholism is transmitted in families. The complexity and heterogeneity of this disorder has made it difficult to identify specific genetic correlates. One design with the potential to do so is the family-based association study, in which the frequencies of genetic polymorphisms are compared between affected and nonaffected members. Reduced central serotonin neurotransmission is associated with features of an antisocial subtype of alcoholism, although a primary deficit has not been traced to a particular component. Genetic markers related to the serotonergic system have been identified, located, and cloned. If associations can be discovered, the development process for pharmacotherapy could be facilitated. …

Reciprocal interactions between the hippocampus and the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices form core components of a proposed temporal lobe memory system. For this reason, the involvement of the hippocampus in event memory is thought to depend on its connections with these cortical areas. Contrary to these predictions, we found that NMDA-induced lesions of the putative rat homologs of these cortical areas (perirhinal plus postrhinal cortices) did not impair performance on two allocentric spatial tasks highly sensitive to hippocampal dysfunction. Fourteen rats were examined and divided into two groups of 7: the control (Group a) and NGF-treated animals (Group B). All animals received a 50 g clip-compression injury to tthe spinal cord at the T9 level. In the NGF-treated animals, NGF (0.1 mg/kg NGF) was injected subcutaneously for seven days. A review of the use of pindone for rabbit control in Western Australia is timely due to increased public concern over the use of this toxin, and because non-target deaths of some native Australian animals have been known to occur following its use. Pindone is one of the first generation indandione anticoagulant rodenticides which were developed in the late 1940' s. The toxicity of anticoagulants arises from their inhibition of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the blood. Thus therapeutic administration of vitamin K provides a reliable antidote against anticoagulant poisoning. Pindone is slow acting and works best with repeated small …

Currently, many women who come into a mental-health setting due to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, sexual issues, etc., are also struggling with eating-disordered behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Seven S-aroylmethyl N,N-disubstituted dithiocarbamate derivatives have been synthesized and their effects on oxotremorine induced tremor have been investigated on mice pretreated with the proparkinsonian drug haloperidol. While the compound 1f inhibited oxotremorine-induced tremors at doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg levels, compounds 1a, 1c and 1e had this effect at the dose of 100 mg/kg. The compounds 1b, 1d and 1g had no effect on oxotremorine-induced tremors in mice. These results suggest that some of these derivatives have central antimuscarinic effects and antiparkinson activities.

To estimate the effect of exposure to tobacco dust on lipid parameters that increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), 70 female workers were selected from the tobacco processing section of a tobacco plant, and 55 women were selected from the administration selection as the controls. Tumor imaging with myocardial perfusion agents has been a focal point for researchers. A kinetic study with 99m Technetium- methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) was performed to evaluate the tumor uptake of this radiopharmaceutical in lung cancer. Thirty-five patients with lung cancer were studied. In 21 (60%) patients, there were regions of high uptake of 99m Tc-MIBI in the lesions. Heart/tumor (H/T), heart/lung (H/L) and tumor/lung (T/L) ratios were obtained. H/T and H/L ratios were 1.66±0.22 and 2.10±0.28 in 2-3 min, and 1.69±0.25 and 2.14±0.27 in 29-30 min respectively. This paper describes the mycological examination of patients admitted to the department of dermatology of Kahramanmaras State Hospital. One hundred and seventy samples of finger nails, hairs and skin were collected from patients suspected of having fungal diseases and were examined under a light microscope after being treated with 15-20% KOH solution. It was observed that 68 of the 170 samples contained fungal hyphae and arthrospores, while 62 samples were free of these. Forty samples were observed to have Malasezia furfur. In this study, we evaluated 39 patients, who had been followed up in various centers, in order to determine the psychosocial effects of IDDM on children and young patients. The mean age of the patients was 15.58±2.29 years and the mean duration of diabetes was 4.41±3 years. We measured the depression and self-esteem scores in all patients using a standardized questionnaire for Turkish children. Depression was found in four patients (10.3%), and the self-esteem scores of all patients were within the normal range. We studied a group of 59 cases with renal amyloidosis. Mean age (45 male, 14 female) was 33.05±13.04 years. All of the cases had secondary amyloidosis. The causes of secondary amyloidosis were as follows: familial mediterranean fever (FMF) 18(30.5%), pulmonary tuberculosis 12(20.33%), chronic osteomyelitis 8(13.55), bronchiectasia 9(15.25%) rheumatic diseases 4(6.4%), Castleman's disease 1(1.6%), unknown etiology 7(11.86%) Hypertension was detected in 15.3% of the cases. A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV. Endothelin-1 levels in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women were determined serially to investigate the correlation between renal function tests and the severity markers of preeclampsia. Plasma endothelin-1 levels were determined in 45 serial plasma samples from 15 pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and in 43 plasma samples from 25 women with uncomplicated pregnancies retrospectively. Renal function tests, complete blood counts, urinalysis and blood pressure measurements were performed during antenatal follow-ups of these patients. Migraine is considered to be a functional neurological disorder. For several years cerebral blood flow studies have been fueling the controversy surrounding the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Tc 99m-HM PAO SPECT brain imaging was performed during the headache-free period of 29 migraine sufferers (24 without aura, 5 with aura). The findings were compared with those of an age-and sex-matched control group of 17 people. The SPECT images revealed clear interhemispheric asymmetry in the right frontal, temporal and occipital lobes of the brain in the study group. Slight hypoperfusion was observed in patients who had interictal EEG abnormalities.
