Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare metabolic disorder that is caused by mutations in the branched chain alpha keto acid dehydrogenase enzyme complex (BCKDC). There are three main genes, the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT, that affect the BCKDC, all contributing to the onset of the disease. MSUD causes encephalopathy, neural deficits, maple syrup scented urine, coma, and even death if not treated due to the aggregation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). There is currently no known cure for patients with MSUD, but the condition can be managed to improve quality of life. This review serves to examine MSUD …

Annually, hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) affect hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. and impose a great economic burden. The current problem is further exacerbated due to the failure of traditional treatment strategies considering the rise in antimicrobial resistance rates. Besides the fact that antimicrobial resistances complicates clinical treatment strategies, patients are also more vulnerable to secondary infections and complications from prolonged antibiotic use. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, potentially deadly disease that impacts millions of Americans’ lives. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by increased blood glucose levels caused by insulin resistance. The normal insulin signaling pathway leads to glucose uptake by GLUT4 through activation of the IRS-1-PI3K-Akt pathway, as well as the insulin-independent pathway that utilizes AMPK. One such treatment method is increased induction of the thermogenesis pathway that is active in brown adipose tissue. However, despite the potential benefits of epigenetic technology, there exist ethical dilemmas surrounding its use in utero. Peripherally selective compounds have been found to stimulate endocannabinoid receptor activity, which has been observed to have positive physiological effects such as ocular wound healing and inflammation control. The activation of the cannabinoid 1 receptor via binding of the endogenous ligands, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, has been indicated to elicit these effects. Both ligands are controlled by two hydrolase enzymes, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), which can be targeted for therapeutic inhibition. Sulfonamide derivatives of JZL195 containing carbamate functionalities in the southern region of the inhibitor compounds were produced using novel carbamate exchange reactions. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disease of the gastrointestinal tract affecting approximately 11-21% of people worldwide (Xiao et al., 2021). This research focuses on the dysregulation of gut homeostasis in IBS and explains how the pathophysiology of the gut is controlled by the bidirectional brain-gut axis. The mechanisms of the brain-gut axis consist of neuro-immune cross talk, neuro-hormone cross talk, microbiome-gut signaling, and the HPA-axis. Low energy availability (LEA) is a state in which energy intake is insufficient to support energy expenditure while maintaining energy balance, which has been shown to result in gastrointestinal distress, immunosuppression, reduced metabolic rate, menstrual dysfunction, diminished bone health, and impaired cardiovascular function in females. Alterations to the microbiome and mucosal lining may propagate gastrointestinal complaints and compromised immune function associated with LEA. A period known as post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) often follows a traumatic brain injury (TBI). PTA is characterized by anterograde and retrograde amnesia, confusion, disorientation, and agitation. The duration and severity of PTA is a key indicator of the long-term prognosis after a TBI, so proper assessment and nursing care of a PTA patient is crucial. The results of a folate deficiency study affecting cognition in mice suggested the altered genes may be controlled by a transcription factor known as Zinc Finger Protein 410 (Zfp410). Due to a lack of literature on Zfp410’s interacting proteins and DNA-binding location, our study aims to further elucidate the role Zfp410 plays in affecting cognition. A custom antibody was used to determine the Zfp410 isoforms present in mouse and rat brains. Curcumin alleviates the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, aneurysm, and cardiomyopathy. The mechanism of curcumin therapy is under active research. The NF-κB and JNK pathways are two that curcumin interacts with to block inflammatory processes, apoptosis, and fibrotic tissue remodeling to prevent the pathologies of cardiovascular disease. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bone fragility and decreased bone mass. Osteocytes and signaling molecules regulate the function of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The RANK pathway is a key regulator in osteoclastogenesis. When the osteoclastic function is greater than osteoblastic function, bone integrity decreases. Causes of osteoporosis include hormones, medications, and diet. Treatments for osteoporosis are hormonal, medicinal, and lifestyle changes. More research needs to be done to find more effective medications with fewer negative side effects to improve the overall quality of life for patients.
