The Physiological Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet On Cardiovascular Health, Jenevieve Petray Dec 2021

The Physiological Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet On Cardiovascular Health, Jenevieve Petray

Nursing | Senior Theses

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasingly more prevalent in today’s society and is attributed to an alarming percentage of American hospitalizations and deaths. Americans are unhealthier than ever before, and the main contributor is the Western diet. Diet is a double-edged sword that can offer benefits or detriments to one’s health. CVD encompasses numerous diagnoses originating from various underlying physiological alterations. These alterations are downstream effects of increased body weight and BMI, increased cholesterol levels, decreased insulin sensitivity and increased arterial plaque buildup. Research shows that a plant-based diet has the potential to manage and reverse all fundamental physiological alterations that …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background Central venous catheters (CVC) are typical for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Due to the invasiveness of this procedure, there is a high risk for central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). These infections have been known to increase mortality and morbidity, medical costs, and reduce hospital reimbursements. Evidenced-based interventions were grouped to assemble a central line bundle to decrease the number of CLABSIs and improve patient outcomes. This scoping review will evaluate the literature and examine the association between reduced CLABSI rates and central line bundle care implementation or current use.

Methods A literature review was …

Decreasing Unintentional Pregnancies For Tennesseans, Paula M. Todd Oct 2021

Decreasing Unintentional Pregnancies For Tennesseans, Paula M. Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2018, 49% of all pregnancies in the United States were unintended, with women with a lower- income status being five times more likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy. Tennessee has a high rate of unintended pregnancies, particularly among the uninsured, low-income, and rural teen populations; some 22% of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Oral or transdermal contraceptives that are affordable and accessible for women of childbearing age can reduce unintentional pregnancies. The addressed gap in clinical practice was that contraceptives are not currently available over the counter in Tennessee pharmacies without a prescription, which necessitates a costly medical …

Ehrlich, Nikki B. Zite, Kevin J. Pearson, W. Todd Cade, Courtney J. Riedinger, Maire M. Blankenship, Rachel A. Tinius

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Deviations from gestational weight gain (GWG) recommendations are associated with unfavorable maternal and neonatal outcomes. There is a need to understand how maternal substrate metabolism, independent of weight status, may contribute to GWG and neonatal outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential link between maternal lipid oxidation rate, GWG, and neonatal anthropometric outcomes.

METHODS: Women (N = 32) with a lean pre-pregnancy BMI were recruited during late pregnancy and substrate metabolism was assessed using indirect calorimetry, before and after consumption of a high-fat meal. GWG was categorized as follows: inadequate, adequate, or excess. Shortly …

Developmental anomalies of the Mullerian duct are one of the fascinating congenital disorders encountered in which Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser syndrome (MRKH) is one of the wide variety of malformations. The most common presentation in MRKH syndrome is primary amenorrhea with normal development of secondary sexual characteristics and normal female karyotype (46, XX). The ovaries and fallopian tubes are usually functional, but the uterus and upper two-third vagina are either underdeveloped or absent. MRKH syndrome can either be an isolated utero-vaginal aplasia (Type I) or associated with extragenital anomalies (Type II). A case of Type I MRKH syndrome is reported …

Hipertensioni Arterial Dhe Njohuritë E Të Semurëve Në Lidhje Me Dietën Dhe Stilin E Jetesës, Kaltrina Rexhepi Rizani

Theses and Dissertations

Impact Of Psychotropic Medications On Electrical Cardiac Conduction In The Emergency Department: A Best Practice Review, Juliann Hatt May 2021

Impact Of Psychotropic Medications On Electrical Cardiac Conduction In The Emergency Department: A Best Practice Review, Juliann Hatt

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract Background: The effects of psychotropic drugs on cardiac repolarization have increasingly gained attention in research and clinical practice over the last 2 decades. The absolute risk of cardiac arrhythmia, such as the polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, Torsades de Pointes (TdP), is low (14 per 10,000 patients/year) and sudden cardiac death as a consequence of all cardiac arrhythmias is less frequent (Braillon et al., 2017). TdP can occur at therapeutic doses of second-generation antipsychotics and antidepressants and with a corrected Q-T (QTc) interval >500 ms. Many psychotropic medications can delay cardiac repolarization thereby producing prolonged QTc in the electrocardiogram (ECG). Emergency …
