Communicating Confidently: Skills For Nursing Student Clinical Success, Cari Granier Oct 2020

Communicating Confidently: Skills For Nursing Student Clinical Success, Cari Granier

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Background: Ineffective communication in healthcare has been tied to medical errors and provider stress (Chaharsoughi et al., 2014). Many nursing students struggle when communicating in the clinical setting because they lack confidence. When left unaddressed, this issue can follow students as they begin their nursing careers. Purpose: The study focused on measuring how confident undergraduate nursing students felt communicating with patients, visitors, nurses, and faculty in the clinical setting prior to and after instructor-led interventions. Methods: 17 first-year baccalaureate nursing students from Nicholls State University volunteered to participate. Participants were asked to anonymously complete a survey prior …

This statement was released in June 2020 by the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine to provide guidance for the 2020-2021 residency application cycle in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many of the recommendations are specific to this cycle, others, such as the Department Summary Letter of Evaluation, are meant to be an enduring change to the internal medicine residency application process. AAIM realizes that some schools may not yet have the tools or resources to implement the template fully this cycle and look toward collaboration within the internal medicine education community to facilitate adoption in the cycles to come.

Implementation Of A Hospital Medicine Rotation And Curriculum For Internal Medicine Residents, Doris Lin, Chirayu Shah, Erica Lescinskas, Cory Ritter, Lindsey Gay Sep 2020

Implementation Of A Hospital Medicine Rotation And Curriculum For Internal Medicine Residents, Doris Lin, Chirayu Shah, Erica Lescinskas, Cory Ritter, Lindsey Gay

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

INTRODUCTION: Hospital medicine is a growing field that focuses not only on expertise in inpatient medicine but also on knowledge of nonclinical health system topics. The traditional model for resident education does not lend itself to learning these topics. We developed a unique ward rotation with a dedicated curriculum called the Resident Inpatient Training Experience (RITE) to address this deficiency.

METHODS: The RITE rotation was initially implemented in the 2013-2014 academic year. The curriculum accompanying the rotation contained four case-based modules that included content on patient safety, quality improvement, cost-conscious care, hospital metrics/reimbursement, physician billing and coding, and transitions of …

When Patients Die: Patient Memorials And Group Reflection In An Internal Medicine Residency Program, Nicole Oakman, Jonathan Lim, Christine Bui, Holland Kaplan, Stephanie Sherman

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Patient death is a formative and emotional experience for physicians. Medical trainees are particularly susceptible to the emotional impact of patient death. However, few studies have examined how trainees process patient death. This study describes annual patient memorials organized at a large multisite academic graduate medical education program. Peer-led, 1-hour patient memorial services were organized for internal medicine residents, including large and small group reflection, a moment of silence, and collective art projects. At the conclusion of each memorial, participants completed a 10-question survey regarding their experience during the memorial and their prior experiences with patient death. Ninety-nine surveys were …

Improving Dental Hygiene Students' Journal Writing, Susan Davide Sep 2020

Improving Dental Hygiene Students' Journal Writing, Susan Davide

Publications and Research

During the introductory semester of treating patients, students are in need of assistance and guidance throughout the assessment and treatment phases of patient care. As novice learners, there is little to no prior knowledge on writing a patient case study presentation. To assist and improve dental hygiene student writing of patient case journals, a scaffold assignment was created. Over the course of the semester students were required to submit five patient case studies in the form of a journal. Each journal had a writing focus with specific directions for each along with a detailed rubric; the final journal encompassing all …

Ppe Compliance And Knowledge Among Healthcare Staff, Beatrice Hagert, Nicole Krummel Sep 2020

Ppe Compliance And Knowledge Among Healthcare Staff, Beatrice Hagert, Nicole Krummel

Nursing DNP Projects

Abstract

Problem: One of the most important steps in infection prevention is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect patients and staff from infectious agents; yet, research indicates that PPE compliance remains suboptimal in many healthcare institutions.

Purpose: To identify the effect of a multidisciplinary education campaign on PPE compliance and knowledge among healthcare workers (HCWs) on a rehabilitation unit of a large, midwestern teaching hospital.

Methods: This project utilized pre-intervention observational audits and a survey to determine baseline PPE compliance and knowledge on the piloted units. A post-intervention survey was sent to HCW to assess for a …

Indonesian Health Professions Students’ Perceptions Toward An Interprofessional Education Program: Findings After Five Years Of Implementation, Santi Purna Sari, Diantha Soemantri, Dian Ayubi, Evi Martha, Hanny Handiyani, Ardi Findyartini

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: The Interprofessional Education (IPE) program is important for preparing health professions students to provide future interprofessional collaborative practice. The Universitas Indonesia Health Sciences Cluster has been implementing the IPE program since 2013. A comprehensive evaluation is required following the implementation of the IPE program. The aim of the study was to evaluate the IPE course based on perceptions of undergraduate students at the Universitas Indonesia from 2013 to 2017.

Methods: A mixed-methods study utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire was conducted with first year students following the completion of the first stage of the IPE course. A total of …

Teaching Diagnostic Reasoning To Faculty Using An Assessment For Learning Tool: Training The Trainer, Adam Cohen, Moushumi Sur, Martin Weisse, Kathryn Moffett, Jeffrey Lancaster, Renee Saggio, Geeta Singhal, Satid Thammasitboon

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

INTRODUCTION: There is a need for a standardized approach to understand and assess clinical reasoning in medical learners. The Assessment of Reasoning Tool was developed based on prevalent theories and frameworks using a multidisciplinary expert panel. As the tool provides a standardized rubric for assessing clinical reasoning, we designed an interactive train-the-trainer workshop for clinical educators and education leaders interested in improving their teaching skills and/or introducing curricula surrounding diagnostic reasoning.

METHODS: In this workshop, participants were exposed to the major domains of diagnostic reasoning and how to apply it to the assessment of a learner's skills. Kolb's experiential learning …

Serious Mental Illness And Rural Primary Care: Provider Training, Attitudes, And Opinions, Lydia Eisenbrandt Aug 2020

Serious Mental Illness And Rural Primary Care: Provider Training, Attitudes, And Opinions, Lydia Eisenbrandt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare resources are especially limited in rural regions of the US. The lack of Primary Care Providers (PCPs) and mental/behavioral health services is problematic, as there are high rates of behavioral and medical concerns within rural populations. Special populations, such as rural persons with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), are medically complex and represent a vulnerable and underserved population. Healthcare outcomes for persons with SMI are poor compared to the general population and commonly lead to premature death. Various barriers prevent this population from accessing optimal healthcare, especially in rural areas, due to negative perceptions/stigma, a lack of understanding from PCPs, …
