The Role Of Mindset, Impostorism, And Irrational Beliefs In Resident Wellness: Results From The Hca Nationwide Longitudinal Resident Wellness Study, Gregory Guldner, Jason Siegel, Brendon Ellis, Anne Brafford
Medical Education
Background The significant proportion of residents reporting poor levels of well-being has appropriately fueled a call for interventions. Yet the specific constructs that impact well-being have not been well researched and validated in the resident population. Mindset (fixed versus growth), impostorism (the belief that one’s success is fraudulent) and irrational beliefs (dysfunctional beliefs that contribute to emotional pain and anguish) are among individual variables postulated to relate to well-being in a high-pressure educational environment. Each of these constructs is amenable to interventions should they have causal relationships to well-being.
Objectives Our prior research resulted in a statistically validated model of …

Introduction: Resident physician burnout is an epidemic in medical education. There are several wellness curricula published, but few describe a comprehensive program to address wellness. Our objectives were to develop and pilot a longitudinal resident wellness curriculum and assess for feasibility and sustainability.
Methods: We surveyed emergency medicine (EM) residents from two residency programs in the United States to assess a baseline level of burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. We developed a comprehensive and longitudinal wellness curriculum for EM residents that incorporated all domains identified by the American College of Emergency Physicians Wellness Wheel. Mindfulness practice was incorporated throughout …
Leading Well: Anesthesiology Program Directors As Servant Leaders And Their Development Of Resident Wellness Programs, Amy Noel Dilorenzo
Leading Well: Anesthesiology Program Directors As Servant Leaders And Their Development Of Resident Wellness Programs, Amy Noel Dilorenzo
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Anesthesiology residents are at significant risk of developing serious issues during training including burnout, depression, and substance abuse. Recent accreditation requirements mandate that these well-being issues be addressed by residency training programs. Program directors, as the leaders of residency programs, are charged with protecting the wellness of residents and leading wellness initiatives. The program director role can be well-described in a servant leadership construct because they are charged with caring for the individual needs of their residents.
This dissertation is a report of a mixed-methods study that explores anesthesiology program directors’ self-perceptions as servant leaders and their efforts to lead …

Objectives/Background: The wellness of resident physicians, particularly in emergency medicine with its high rate of burnout, has become of paramount importance to residency programs. This study aims to evaluate the effects of the implementation of an evidence-based wellness curriculum on self-reported resident wellness across three emergency medicine residency programs.
Methods: This is a prospective, interventional study of the impact of a well-defined, longitudinal wellness curriculum administered to all categorical residents in three emergency medicine residency programs. Anonymous surveys incorporating the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were administered before and after implementation of the …

The "ED Stories" project is a novel method for promoting individual wellness and interpersonal relationships on a virtual platform in an emergency medicine residency program. We engaged multiple individuals across all levels of medical training on a virtual platform to facilitate discussion regarding difficult situations, patient interactions, and tips on how to succeed in challenge circumstances in the future. The platform was outlined as a "safe space," free of judgment and criticism. We engaged 54 participants with a culmination of 131 interactions; there were 14 original posts with a total of 22 comments. We believe that this virtual platform allowed …

Technology Use And Wellness Maintenance In A Medical Student Population, Lillian Flashner
Technology Use And Wellness Maintenance In A Medical Student Population, Lillian Flashner
Phase 1
Introduction: Burnout now affects more than half of U.S. medical students, causing decreased resilience and coping ability. When these students become physicians, they are more likely to commit medical error and have decreased patient satisfaction. Studies in college students have shown that technology use may improve wellness and deter burnout; however, heretofore no studies have been conducted to understand if medical students use the same practices.
Objective: Our specific aims were to survey medical students to identify whether they use technology to maintain their wellness, and to identify which technologies are the most effective for this purpose.
Methods: We distributed …

Assessing The Benefits Of A Collegiate-Run Wellness Program For Akron Inner City Residents, Alaina Gent
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper offers insight into the University of Akron Wellness Wednesday Program, an interprofessional organization of campus students and faculty that present wellness programming to three off-campus housing developments: Edgewood Village, Belcher Apartments, and Saferstein Towers I. The residents of these complexes receive wellness programming from many different disciplines for six months of the year, and then experience a large, four-month gap when the university breaks for summer. With this gap, residents often vocalized that they felt as if information was lost and that they were not able to remember as much when the program returned in the fall. In …

Healthier Dishes to Serve This Thanksgiving
This year, why not make Thanksgiving not only delicious but also a health-boosting experience that’s truer to the origins of the holiday? For most of us, our traditional Thanksgiving meal has shifted away from the natural foods enjoyed by the 17th-century celebrants. But it’s not that difficult to get back to preparing delicious food that is fresh from the harvest…and packed with nutrition.

A Week Devoted To Wellness In The Preclinical Phase: Lessons Learned, Nethra S. Ankam, Md
Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Posters
Background
During the 2017-2018 academic year, a large private medical college underwent a complete transformation of its curriculum from a primarily lecture based, traditional format to an integrated, longitudinal format that included both time limited blocks and longitudinal threads of content. Wellness, conceptualized at both wellness of the provider and the patient, is one of the eight threads.
Goals
- Provide a structured pause in medical school for you to reflect on your own wellness
- Allow time to explore the ideas of resilience
- Provide time for rejuvenation
- Allow you to start building productive habits to last you throughout your entire medical …

The Inception Of A Prediabetes Prevention Program In County Government, Gregory R. Grier
The Inception Of A Prediabetes Prevention Program In County Government, Gregory R. Grier
Education Dissertations and Projects
With the increasing prevalence and high cost of treatment, diabetes places an enormous demand on economic resources. To combat this issue and rising health care costs,Cleveland County Government took a proactive approach and partnered with its local YMCA. The YMCA was contracted to provide Prediabetes Prevention and Diabetes Control program classes to County employees. The programs were designed to (a) decrease the A1c level of program participants, (b) lower health care costs for the County, and (c) provide education about prevention and maintenance.
The ultimate goal of the program was to assist county administration and staff in their efforts to …

The United States Medical Licensing Exam (Usmle) And Medical Student Wellness: An Ethnographic Qualitative Study At Cooper Medical School Of Rowan University, Patricia Davis Vanston
The United States Medical Licensing Exam (Usmle) And Medical Student Wellness: An Ethnographic Qualitative Study At Cooper Medical School Of Rowan University, Patricia Davis Vanston
Theses and Dissertations
Research indicates that medical students experience unusually high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and loss of empathy while in medical school. As the number of medical students rises and residency positions remain stagnant, the USMLE receives greater emphasis as a barometer to determine residency placement and future career paths thereby increasing levels of stress among students. Stress is associated with diminished self-care, potentially leading to a negative impact on well-being. This ethnographic, qualitative study sought to examine the extent to which the anticipation of, preparation for, and implications of the USMLE contribute to medical student stress, wellness, and self-care. Through …
