Implementation Of Patient-Centered Care By Athletic Training Students During Clinical Experiences: A Report From The Association Of Athletic Training Education Research Network, Julie M. Cavallario, Bonnie L. Van Lunen, Stacy E. Walker, R. Curtis Bay, Cailee E. Welch-Bacon Jan 2023

Implementation Of Patient-Centered Care By Athletic Training Students During Clinical Experiences: A Report From The Association Of Athletic Training Education Research Network, Julie M. Cavallario, Bonnie L. Van Lunen, Stacy E. Walker, R. Curtis Bay, Cailee E. Welch-Bacon

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Patient-centered care (PCC) is a core competency that should be required by all healthcare education programs, but little is known about its implementation in athletic training clinical experiences. Therefore, we examined characteristics of patient encounters documented by athletic training students implementing PCC behaviors. A multisite panel design was used to recruit 363 students from twelve professional athletic training programs (five undergraduate, seven graduate). Over 1.5 years, clinical experience patient encounter data were logged in E*Value Case Logs, including student role during the encounter, length of encounter, and clinical site. Generalized estimating equations models characterized the likelihood students included PCC behaviors …

Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd Jan 2023

Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Ineffective handoff communication has been recognized for years as a practice issue and is the most frequently reported cause of sentinel events in U.S. hospitals (Dufault et al., 2010) and responsible, at least in part, for 30% of all malpractice claims (Fucik, 2019). The development of standardized tools has been identified as a key component to improving handover practice. For this project, a standardized SBAR tool was modified for a local emergency department. The intervention was a process change in the emergency department to utilize an SBAR tool during handoff reports. The project was implemented by educating staff on the …

A Step-By-Step Guide For Mentors To Facilitate Team Building And Communication In Virtual Teams., Julia F. Aquino, Robert Riss, Sara M. Multerer, Leora N. Mogilner, Teri L. Turner Dec 2022

A Step-By-Step Guide For Mentors To Facilitate Team Building And Communication In Virtual Teams., Julia F. Aquino, Robert Riss, Sara M. Multerer, Leora N. Mogilner, Teri L. Turner

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

As collaborative work in medical education has increasingly moved online, team mentors have had to adapt their practices into the virtual environment. Fostering connection, communication and productivity on virtual teams requires specific skills and deliberate practice that differ from in-person teamwork. Drawing from best practices in business, education and medicine and also from our own experience as a virtual team, we present a guide for mentors to create and sustain successful virtual teams. Grounded in Tuckman's Five Stage Model of Team Development, we offer specific strategies for virtual team mentors to promote team cohesion, mitigate conflict, maintain productivity and leverage …

Theory Building As Integrated Reflection: Understanding Physician Reflection Through Human Communication Research, Medical Education, And Ethics, Andrea Vicini, Ashley P. Duggan, Allen F. Shaughnessy Nov 2022

Theory Building As Integrated Reflection: Understanding Physician Reflection Through Human Communication Research, Medical Education, And Ethics, Andrea Vicini, Ashley P. Duggan, Allen F. Shaughnessy

Journal of Health Ethics

Grounded in a presupposition that a single explanatory framework cannot fully account for the expansive learning processes that occur during medical residency, the article examines developing physicians’ reflective writing from three disciplinary lenses. The goal is to understand how the multi-dimensional nature of medical residency translates into assembling educational experiences and constructing meaning that cannot be fully explained through a single discipline. An interdisciplinary research team across medical education, communication, and ethics qualitatively analyzed reflective entries (N=756) completed by family medicine residents (N=33) across an academic year. Results provide evidence for moving toward an integrated thematic explanation across disciplines. The …

Civility And Communication Interventions To Improve Patient Outcomes, Lane Denney May 2022

Civility And Communication Interventions To Improve Patient Outcomes, Lane Denney

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Communication in health care is vital for the successful care of patients and their outcomes while they are hospitalized. Healthcare workers are responsible for communicating patient information whether it is between change of shifts or reporting to a patient’s provider. It is important that this information is communicated effectively. This review evaluates how nurses communicate in shift- report and how this affects patient outcomes and civility between nursing units and teams. Overall, bedside shift reports promoted the best patient outcomes and increased teamwork on hospital units.

Nurses Leading In Bridging The Culture Gap: Communicating With The Deaf Community, Veronica C. Leftridge May 2022

Nurses Leading In Bridging The Culture Gap: Communicating With The Deaf Community, Veronica C. Leftridge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nurses provide patient care in clinics, hospitals, homes, churches, schools, communities, and military, as well as on emergency medical helicopters. When a nurse is assigned to care for a patient, the patient expects the nurse to be culturally competent, communicate effectively, and provide safe quality care. However, cultural incompetence is observed when nurses provide care for Deaf patients, but they are unfamiliar with Deaf culture. In addition, communication is a fundamental skill nurses learn in nursing school, but course content in nursing programs rarely touches on how to communicate effectively with Deaf patients. Of the approximately 325 million people in …

Understanding Both Sides Of The Blood Draw: The Experience Of The Pediatric Patient And The Phlebotomist, Julie R. Piazza, Sandra Merkel, Brooke Rothberg, Joan Gargaro, Kristin Kullgren Apr 2022

Understanding Both Sides Of The Blood Draw: The Experience Of The Pediatric Patient And The Phlebotomist, Julie R. Piazza, Sandra Merkel, Brooke Rothberg, Joan Gargaro, Kristin Kullgren

Patient Experience Journal

A phlebotomist’s words and actions play a crucial role in success of a blood draw and in providing a supportive patient experience. This study examined use of comfort measures during a pediatric blood draw. The phlebotomist’s use of soft words, positioning, distraction, coaching/support were observed with sixty children between 3-14 years of age during a blood draw. The level of fear /anxiety before and during the blood draw was recorded by an RA. The child’s level of fear/anxiety was observed and reported by the parent/caregiver after the procedure. Comfort measures provided by phlebotomists, the parent/caregiver’s report of their child’s usual …
