The Effect Of Footwear And Speed On Nonlinear Variability Of Runners, Kaleb Luna, Becca Henicke, Bryon C. Applequist
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The high incidence of foot and lower leg injury in adult walkers and runners and its relationship with footwear is a problem that has been investigated exhaustively (Barnes & Smith, 1994; Herzog, 2012; Knapik et al., 2014; Tancred, 1996).Traditionally, measures such as stride length, step length, step width, stride time and step time, as well as kinematic (joint angles) and kinetic (forces) measures have been used to quantify gait (Chang et al., 2006, Diop et al., 2005, Diop et al., 2004, Samson et al., 2009). These measures are important, but may not reveal the mechanism, or mechanisms affecting gait. Many …

Music Enhances Motor Cortex Excitability In Physically Active Individuals, Anupama Thapa, Ana Carolina Panhan, Erin Lally, Joosung Kim
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Music is often used by exercisers and benefits physical performance. The positive effects of music on physical function are induced by the changes in motor cortex excitability while listening to music. Recent studies reveal that modulation of brain excitability in the hand is increased by music but is likely dependent on the characteristics of music tempo, preference, and the individual’s motivational state. No study has explicitly investigated whether music perceived as motivating for exercise creates changes in motor cortex excitability of the quadriceps. PURPOSE: This randomized crossover study examines the effect of the preferred music on motor cortex excitability …

Effect Of Prolonged Water Immersion On Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance: A Feasibility Study And Preliminary Analysis, Joonsun Park, Landon Corbett, Justus Rammell, Talin Louder
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Water immersion may enhance muscle strength by increasing cerebral blood flow and activating the cerebral cortex due to an upwardly directed hydrostatic pressure gradient. Early evidence shows that grip strength improves when individuals are partially immersed in water compared to on land. However, it remains unclear whether this effect can be confirmed under conditions involving the activation of a larger muscle mass. PURPOSE: The purpose was to investigate the effects of prolonged water immersion on lower-extremity maximal isometric strength using the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) test. METHODS: Six male recreationally active young adults (age = 24.3 ± 3.4 …

The Effect Of Ankle And Hallux Positioning On Hallux Force Production, Mickelle Maccabe, Tanner Krupp, Joshua Sponbeck, Wayne Johnson, Dustin Bruening
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The foot is not simply a rigid lever, but contributes substantially to movement energetics, primarily through muscle-tendon dynamics. However, more research is needed to understand how the small muscles of the foot generate and regulate force production. PURPOSE: We quantified the effects of ankle and hallux positioning on hallux flexion force production, isolating the contribution of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and brevis (FHB). We hypothesized the FHL length changes would influence hallux force. METHODS: Eighteen healthy adult volunteers participated with written consent. Participants assumed each of four testing positions on a custom-built isometric toe flexion force sensor: ankle …

Effect Of Barefoot Strength Training On Time To Stabilization And Ankle Inversion During Single-Leg Drop Landing In Ncaa Division I Female Volleyball Players, Logan Manley, Sydney Leisz, Trevor Gillum, William Boyer, Jared Coburn
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
When volleyball players land from a jump, there is a large energy transfer that occurs throughout the kinetic chain. Time to stabilization (TTS) is a measure that represents the ability to control ground reaction forces (GRF) upon landing. Ankle inversion (INV) angles upon landing also represent the risk of ankle injury due to forceful inversion of the ankle joint. Prior research has found differing risk for injury when accounting for volleyball sport-specific limb dominance and inter-limb asymmetries. A joint is weakened when exposed to repetitive landing movements, putting it at a higher risk of injury due to continual absorption of …
