Interprofessional Education And Collaboration In The Philippines: Current Landscape, Gaps, And Propositions, Arvie Vitente, Michael Sy, Reeva Ann Sumulong, Anna Karerina Causapin, Jocel Regino

Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a forward-looking strategy in healthcare education that unites students and professionals from various disciplines to enhance interprofessional collaboration (IPC). IPE is designed to prepare future health and social care professionals to navigate and address the complexities of modern healthcare systems. In the Philippines, despite being a developing country with a fragmented healthcare system, there have been efforts over the last 15 to 20 years to introduce and institutionalize IPE and IPC in both higher education and healthcare settings. However, significant challenges persist, including the dominance of medical professionals, inadequate regulatory mechanisms, and a lack of strong …

Medical education is in the process of a pedagogical revolution. Traditional lectures are playing a progressively smaller role, with more of the content being delivered through student-centered small-group sessions. Problem-based learning (PBL) has become a centerpiece of education for many medical schools, in large part because of its focus on the learners identifying their own knowledge gaps. As junior scientists seek faculty appointments in institutions focused on healthcare education, they will find that skills in PBL are valued by the academic community. Among the necessary skills is the capability to lead efforts in PBL case writing. The cases, each of …

Shifting Healthcare In Rural South Carolina: A Study Of Media Coverage Of The Effects Of Hospital Closures, Morgan Harper Apr 2025

Shifting Healthcare In Rural South Carolina: A Study Of Media Coverage Of The Effects Of Hospital Closures, Morgan Harper

Senior Theses

Rural hospital closures have become an increasingly urgent issue in healthcare across the United States. These closures have impacted access to healthcare, the job market, and general community health. Most hospitals have been forced to close due to low patient volumes, financial struggles, and corporate ownership. Immediate implications of closures include the displacement of healthcare workers, community concern about lacking a central healthcare facility, and increased travel times to access care.

This thesis examines South Carolina’s healthcare landscape in areas with hospital closures since 2012 and explores the effects of and responses to these closures as discussed in newspapers and …

The Role Of Chatgpt In Personal Statements For Plastic Surgery Residency Applications: Program Directors' Perspective., Krishna A Patel, Carly J Suriano, Jeffrey E Janis

Medical Education Articles

BACKGROUND: Personal statements are a required component of plastic surgery residency applications but can be extremely time- and labor-intensive. Artificial intelligence (AI) programs like ChatGPT can streamline personal statement writing, but their use, especially if undisclosed, can have ethical implications. This study elucidates the perspective of plastic surgery residency program directors (PDs) regarding the importance of personal statements in reviewing applicants and whether ChatGPT should be utilized.

METHODS: An anonymous, 6-question multiple-choice survey was designed and administered in 3 rounds via REDCap to 120 current plastic surgery residency PDs. An additional email reminder was administered by the principal investigator. Data …

The Impact Of Art In Medicine Training And Its Effectiveness On Professionalism And Interpersonal Skills: A Prospective Study., Maria Musri, Atif Nehvi, Shireen Chacko, Glenn Eiger, Nazanin Moghbeli

Einstein Health Papers

INTRODUCTION: Internal Medicine residents in The United States of America (USA) need to demonstrate competency in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core areas to meet training requirements. Two of these core competencies are professionalism and interpersonal/communication skills. Medical humanities can positively influence trainee development by cultivating these skills. There is limited literature on the use of art-based programs to enhance communication and professionalism skills among residents aside from the original FRAME workshop. We have designed a six-part series called "Using Art for Professionalism and Communication Skills in Medical Education" (UAPCMedEd) that implements visual arts training strategies to …

Department of Medical Education Posters

Undergraduate medical education (UME) encounters several challenges, including the need for adequate practice items replicating standardized medical exams like the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).1 This demand suggests a role for innovative, efficient approaches to item generation. Artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLM), like those employed by ChatGPT, present an attractive solution.

Previous authors have investigated ChatGPT’s ability to “pass” high-stakes assessments, such as the USMLE,2–4 the ophthalmology and radiology board examinations,5,6 and other nations’ certification examinations.7 Less literature has been published on ChatGPT’s ability to construct vignette-based single best answer multiple choice items similar to …

Enhancing Cauti Prevention Through Daily Catheter Care Charting, Pre-Packaged Wipes, And Targeted Nursing Education, Alexis Bartolo, Hannah Todd, David Wagner

Scholars Week

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are common healthcare-associated infections that increase patient morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This evidence-based project aims to reduce CAUTIs by implementing daily catheter care charting, using pre-packaged antiseptic wipes, and providing targeted nursing education. These interventions will enhance accountability, improve hygiene practices, and equip nurses with the latest CAUTI prevention techniques. The project evaluates the current catheter care policy, comparing it with evidence-based practices to identify improvements. Guided by Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory, the proposed policy changes aim to improve patient safety and care quality. By integrating these interventions into routine practice, the project …

Connecting Disciplines: Dermatologists Discuss Skin Cancer Screening In Physical Therapy, Michael T. Robinson, Lindsay Gietzen

Pacific Journal of Health

Background: This study aims to explore dermatologists’ perspectives on the integration of skin cancer screening within physical therapy practice. The hypothesis is that insights from dermatologists can enhance the efficacy and accuracy of skin cancer screening by physical therapists (PTs), thereby improving early detection rates and patient outcomes. Methods: A total of five dermatologists participated in this study, each with between 5 and 18 years of experience and a diverse range of expert opinions and insights. This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews with participating dermatologists. The interview questions focused on their knowledge of skin cancer screening, perceptions of its implementation …
