Orienting Patients To Their Own Care: Implementing Goals And Progress On Whiteboards, Grace Beer, Leah Mcgough

Scholars Week

Introduction: Goal-setting within the hospital setting can be a useful tool for health care professionals. By using a white board in a patient’s room, nurses can work with patients to create goals in their plan of care. Implementing daily goals on these boards can improve patient satisfaction, increase nurse-patient communication, and provide a sense of accomplishment.

Methods: We researched scholarly articles that discuss the use of goal-setting in clinical practice. These articles engage in the idea that patients visually seeing their goals helps them stay focused and motivated in their health care. The researchers used methods such as interviews, focus …

Does Positive Psychology Coaching Improve Trainee Well-Being? Evidence From A Longitudinal Professional Development Coaching Program In A Cohort Of Pediatric Trainees, Benjamin Nelson, Jacqueline T. Chu, Michael G. Healy, Yoon Soo Park, Kerri Palamara Md

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Trainee burnout is common and evidence supporting the effectiveness of well-being interventions for this population is limited. We studied the effect of a longitudinal coaching program grounded in positive psychology on measures of pediatric trainee well-being.

Methods: Pediatric interns and fellows (n = 67) were enrolled in a positive psychology coaching program in 2017-2019. Pediatric faculty (n = 23) underwent training and were paired with trainees outside their field of interest. Trainees were surveyed at the beginning and end of the program to assess burnout and well-being, and key skills necessary to achieve well-being.

Results: Thirty-one …

While the dangers of physical inactivity are well understood and physicians have a desire to address them, a lack of education in exercise prescription (ERx) may be a barrier to properly prescribing exercise to patients. The aim of this research was to explore the need for ERx education amongst students and physicians in training and determine the effectiveness of ERx didactic.

Methods: A one hour curriculum was developed based on the American College of Sports Medicine principles of ERx. Pre- and post-surveys were administered immediately …

Professional Development Of Medical Students Transitioning From Preclinical To Clinical Training , Bridget Croniger, Mikaela Grudzien, Rubab Imtiaz, Jennifer Mendez

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background:

Personal and professional development (PPD) is a competency domain for graduated U.S. medical students. Current research shows that PPD is lowest at transitional periods, such as the transition from preclinical to clinical training.

Methods:

To assess professional development at a large, allopathic medical school, a survey with seven statements regarding professional development was formed. The statements encompassed domains of mentorship, communication skills, professionalism, team work, and innovation and asked students to rank each statement from 1-5 (1 - highly deficient, 5 - highly proficient). The online, anonymous survey was emailed to all second year medical students at Wayne State …
