Associations Between Stress, Anxiety, Depression, And Emotional Intelligence Among Osteopathic Medical Students, Nicole A. Doyle, Robert E. Davis, Syed Siraj A. Quadri, Joshua R. Mann, Manoj Sharma, Richard M. Wardrop, Vinayak K. Nahar

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Context: Stress, anxiety, and depression affect medical student populations at rates disproportionate to those of general student populations. Emotional intelligence (EI) has been suggested as a protective factor in association with psychological distress. Objective: To explore the relationships between EI and stress, anxiety, and depression among a sample of US osteopathic medical students. Methods: From February to March 2020, a convenience sample of medical students enrolled at an osteopathic medical school in the southeastern region of the United States were invited to complete a voluntary and anonymous 54-item online questionnaire that included sociodemo-graphic items as well as validated and reliable …

tion residing in rural areas that have poor access to medical experts. Despite having a ridiculously huge, underserved population, very few African countries currently have any form of sustained and organized telemedicine practice, and even fewer have dedicated tele-neurology services. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has proved to be one of the most significant disruptors of vital sectors of human endeavor in modern times. In the healthcare sector, there is an increasing advocacy to deliver non-urgent care via telemedicine. This paper examined the current state of tele-neurology practice and infrastructural preparedness in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, there is over 70% mobile phone …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Objective:

American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recommends ongoing care of 10 patients per resident however its implication is unclear. We hypothesized EMR quality to vary based on patient load and call status.

Methods:

We conducted a double-blind, single-center, retrospective observational study between 2017 and 2019 to investigate the quality and accuracy of resident documentation using the Responsible Electronic Documentation (RED) Checklist, a validated scoring system.

Results:

A total of 234 independent charts were analyzed and 80 met scoring criteria. Average patients per residents was 4, 9.1, 7.2, and 5.5 on “call” day (D0), “post-call” day (D1), “mid-call” day …

A Watched Pot Never Boils: Attentive Care Needs No Timer, Dennis J. Baumgardner Jan 2021

A Watched Pot Never Boils: Attentive Care Needs No Timer, Dennis J. Baumgardner

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

In this issue introduction, the editor-in-chief of Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews comments on the premise that length of patient consultation time is less important than what patients perceive happened during that time. Regardless of the time allotted to a clinical visit, health care providers should make efforts to address the emotional and psychosocial needs of their patients. As always, taking a little time to express empathy can make a big difference in patient satisfaction.

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: Patient-centered care promotes positive health outcomes in pediatrics. We created a provider-focused intervention and implemented it in a pragmatic clustered randomized controlled trial to improve health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among pediatric patients.

Methods: A one-time (1–1.5-hour) webinar focusing on patient-centered care and motivational interviewing, using obesity screening as an example, was developed. Pediatric providers were recruited and randomized to either intervention (webinar) or control (usual care) arms. All well-child visits to these providers for a period of up to 5 months following webinar completion (or study enrollment for controls) were identified, and these family/patients were invited to complete …

National Thyroid Awareness Month

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck and its job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone helps the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should. It is vitally important to ensure your thyroid gland is healthy and functioning properly.

Focused Hospital Medicine Cme On Pulmonary Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Through Just-In-Time Training During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Matthew Buttarazzi, Kristen Bartlett, Katherine Stebbins, Monica Thim

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: We describe the use of focused CME with just-in-time training in pulmonary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for hospitalists as part of our response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This training served as a pilot for developing a longitudinal training program for our inpatient adult medicine providers.

Methods: In mid-March 2020, ultrasound education and image review were deployed within hospital medicine at a large academic medical center. Faculty were provided (1) a small-group lecture focused on ultrasound findings in pneumonia, (2) weekly review of imaging, and (3) a monthly review conference of ultrasound imaging.

Results: Use of POCUS for pulmonary pathology …

Physician Shadowing: An Essential Practice In Fostering The Doctors Of Tomorrow, Anna M. Martens, Jo Linder, Janell Lewis Jan 2021

Physician Shadowing: An Essential Practice In Fostering The Doctors Of Tomorrow, Anna M. Martens, Jo Linder, Janell Lewis

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Problem Statement: Maine Medical Center (MMC) lacks a robust shadowing program, and there is inequity in shadowing opportunities for students from underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Physician shadowing is essential for college students interested in going to medical school as it helps students make career decisions and strengthens their medical school applications. As we continue to expand our undergraduate programs in medical education and seek to grow our physician workforce, we need to provide students with equal opportunities to observe careers in medicine in order to foster interest and passion for the health field.

Background: A robust body of …

Wound Nurse Specialists’ Pressure Injury Knowledge And Specialty Support Surface Preferences, Catherine Koutroumpis Jan 2021

Wound Nurse Specialists’ Pressure Injury Knowledge And Specialty Support Surface Preferences, Catherine Koutroumpis

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Low-level foam specialty support surfaces are negatively affecting the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries that occur each year and overall skin health of acute care patients. Lack of knowledge by wound care specialists on different types of therapy could lead to patients not receiving the best possible specialty surfaces available. An online anonymous survey of 19 certified wound care nurses was conducted. The survey examined the nurses’ knowledge of pressure injuries using the Pieper Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge test (PZPUKT) and choice of specialty support surface for prevention of pressure injuries. One hundred percent of nurses scored 80% and higher …

Faculty Publications - College of Medical Science

Objectives: To describe the development and evaluation of a university-wide competency and evaluation framework for intra- and interprofessional education (IPE) teamwork.

Methods: Development of the framework was based on existing literature and specific contexts of the schools within our university. Evaluation and program alignment regarding use of the framework were achieved through qualitative interviews with deans of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and focused on how they evaluated student progression towards the university-wide teamwork competency. Interview data were analyzed using classical content analysis.

Results: Despite efforts to carefully design the framework, interviews revealed that significant variation exists regarding …
