Ef24, A Curcumin Analogue Inhibits The Migration And Invasion Of Highly Metastatic Breast Cancer Cells, Noor Abushagur, Debarshi Roy, Atasi De Chatterjee, Siddhartha Das

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

In 2011, American Cancer Society reported that about 230,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the US, and among them 40,000 died. This disease targets women of all ages and races, and although survival rates have increased recently, it is still a huge problem that influences the lives of millions of people. In case of non-metastatic breast cancers, patients are usually responsive to various treatments, but in patients with metastatic breast cancer the current medications are not fully effective. The goal of the current study is to evaluate the efficacy of a newly synthesized anti-cancer agent, EF-24, on metastatic …

The Socialization Of Bullying Through Community College Nursing Education: A Multiple Case Study, Margaret M. O'Conner Machon

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Many recent studies propose that bullying in the workplace is prevalent and is a phenomenon which occurs in the nursing workplace as well as in nursing education. This qualitative study examined the effects of vertical bullying upon community college nursing students and graduates, and the effect of this behavior upon the socialization of those learning the nursing profession. The study is based on a theoretical framework based on the findings of Salin (2003) and Twale and De Luca (2008) adapting their theory of bullying in academia which incorporated enabling, motivating and precipitating factors leading to intensified bullying. The study investigated …

Results: There appears to be an increase in the use of self-tracking tools, particularly in …

The Closure Of New Orleans' Charity Hospital After Hurricane Katrina: A Case Of Disaster Capitalism, Kenneth Brad Ott May 2012

The Closure Of New Orleans' Charity Hospital After Hurricane Katrina: A Case Of Disaster Capitalism, Kenneth Brad Ott

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Amidst the worst disaster to impact a major U.S. city in one hundred years, New Orleans’ main trauma and safety net medical center, the Reverend Avery C. Alexander Charity Hospital, was permanently closed. Charity’s administrative operator, Louisiana State University (LSU), ordered an end to its attempted reopening by its workers and U.S. military personnel in the weeks following the August 29, 2005 storm. Drawing upon rigorous review of literature and an exhaustive analysis of primary and secondary data, this case study found that Charity Hospital was closed as a result of disaster capitalism. LSU, backed by Louisiana state officials, …

Patient Safety Competencies In Rural Asn Students: An Evidence-Based Curricular Innovation, Janeen Berndt May 2012

Patient Safety Competencies In Rural Asn Students: An Evidence-Based Curricular Innovation, Janeen Berndt

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Hospital clinical experiences are important events in prelicensure nursing education. Benefits include the opportunity for students to experience actual nursing responsibilities, immersion into environment, and professional socialization. However, challenges in finding appropriate clinical experiences include competition over clinical sites, decreasing patient acuity, and high student-faculty ratios. Rural schools of nursing have these challenges and those inherent in rural environments such as limited health care access, restricted critical access hospitals, and limited resources. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to plan, implement, and evaluate the use of a series of patient care simulations as an educational intervention to improve …

Road Map To Becoming A Physician Assistant, Maguire J. Miller May 2012

Road Map To Becoming A Physician Assistant, Maguire J. Miller

Senior Honors Projects

The field of medicine is under constant change and reconstruction, especially when it comes to healthcare practitioners. When a demand is placed on the system, healthcare providers must figure out how they can satisfy the medical needs of the population. Within the past few decades there has been a shortage of people who are capable of fulfilling these needs. For this reason a new profession has been developed; it is called a Physician Assistant (PA). Professionals with this title have been through a rigorous training modeled after what a medical student goes through, but it is condensed into a much …
