Validation Of An Electronic Trigger To Measure Missed Diagnosis Of Stroke In Emergency Departments, Viralkumar Vaghani, Li Wei, Umair Mushtaq, Dean F Sittig, Andrea Bradford, Hardeep Singh
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic errors are major contributors to preventable patient harm. We validated the use of an electronic health record (EHR)-based trigger (e-trigger) to measure missed opportunities in stroke diagnosis in emergency departments (EDs).
METHODS: Using two frameworks, the Safer Dx Trigger Tools Framework and the Symptom-disease Pair Analysis of Diagnostic Error Framework, we applied a symptom-disease pair-based e-trigger to identify patients hospitalized for stroke who, in the preceding 30 days, were discharged from the ED with benign headache or dizziness diagnoses. The algorithm was applied to Veteran Affairs National Corporate Data Warehouse on patients seen between 1/1/2016 and 12/31/2017. Trained …

Facilitating Well-Rounded Clinical Experience For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students, Joan Alviar Fraino, Nancy Selix
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
There is a steady increase in demand for mental health services and a lack of providers. Recent societal changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have increased these needs. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) are well suited to offer these services. High-quality clinical PMHNP student experiences are based on well-rounded curricula in a variety of clinical settings. Meeting the need for clinical education and finding high-quality preceptors is especially challenging during the pandemic due to the lack of preceptors and access to care for in-person services. Creative approaches are needed to meet student clinical experience needs.

SWOSU COVID-19 Vaccination Opportunities
- The Delta variant is nearly twice as contagious as previous variants.
- Some data suggest the Delta variant might cause more severe illness than previous strains in unvaccinated persons.
- Unvaccinated people remain the greatest concern.
- The greatest risk of transmission is among unvaccinated people who are much more likely to contract, and therefore transmit the virus.

Learning From The Past: A Novel Approach To Reducing Unplanned Extubations In The Neonatal Icu, Yonatan Kurland
Research Days
Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): The objective of this quality improvement project is to decrease unplanned extubations in a Level IV NICU to an annual rate of2020.
Methods (include PDSA cycles): We hypothesized that increased awareness of historical ETT position would both prevent unnecessary ETT position adjustments and encourage prophylactic adjustments to adjust for significant weight gain or loss. In December 2019, we implemented a novel intervention to provide readily accessible graphs of historical ETT tube position in each neonate with corrected gestational agecycles, we provided education to all members of the multidisciplinary team, we enlisted the Information Technologies Department to …

TheCOVID-19 pandemic thrusted the relatively novel approach of telemedicine to thecenter stage of healthcare infrastructures within the U.S. and around the globe, leadingto adramatically increasedutilization of telehealth services.Since the first reported case ofCOVID-19 in the U.S. on January 20, 2020, telemedicine has played a large role in reducingviraltransmission by preserving PPE and supporting crippled healthcare revenuestreams. The convenience of these serviceshas also reduced caregiver burden and travelcosts for patients. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have consistentlydemonstrated a strong association between telehealth utilization and increased patient satisfaction. The impact of telemedicine on patient satisfaction during the currentpandemic has yet to …

Students are regarded as frequent users of mobile phones which has proven to be a convenient and acceptable method to promote healthy lifestyle. Students usually engage in relatively high levels of risky behavior and make unhealthy lifestyle choices, a study that investigates how health students access health information is necessary. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional study which was undertaken among third-year nursing students from three nurses training institutions in Ghana. A total of 270 students participated in the study. Most of the respondents who were currently subscribers of the health messages reported that they usually received health information on …

Investigating The Development Of Perceptions And Behavioural Intentions Towards People Living With Hiv (Plhiv) Among Pre-Clinical Medical Students In The University Of Malaya, Calvin Christopher Willims Fernandez
Student Works (2020-2029)
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, there has been a high prevalence of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV (PLHIV). They manifest in people’s attitudes and behaviour, and in various contexts including education, employment and healthcare. For the latter specifically, stigma-driven behaviours by healthcare practitioners have resulted in poorer health outcomes for PLHIV, where they are humiliated, isolated and in some cases, even refused treatment. This subsequently leads to an increase in mental health issues and other damaging health behaviours among PLHIV. Numerous studies have explored the manifestation of these stigmatizing attitudes and behaviours …

Perception Of Undergraduate Medical Students On Integration Of Radiological Anatomy For Pre-Clinical Teaching, Reshma Mohamed Ansari
Student Works (2020-2029)
Integration is the way forward to enable accommodation of the ever-expanding content in medical education. While revising the curriculum, stakeholders’ perception aids to tailor a curriculum matching their needs. Radiological anatomy (RA) is an integrated discipline of topographical, cross-sectional anatomy with radiological representation of structural anatomy. Though RA has been widely incorporated in most of the medical curricula, there is a dearth of standardization in terms of student learning time (SLT), content and teachers. This study was planned to record the perception of MBBS students on RA teaching in pre-clinical years in University of Cyberjaya, Malaysia. A modified, piloted and …

A Qualitative Study On The Perception Of Undergraduate Nursing Students On Online Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic At A Public University In Malaysia, Muhammad Hibatullah Romli
Student Works (2020-2029)
The COVID-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order have restricted learning activities in traditional face-to-face classrooms. Subsequently, these learning activities have shifted to full online learning, and these activities are conducted in the student’s own environment namely dorm room and home. The present researcher conducted a meta-synthesis, and the result shows that full online learning is receiving resistance, however, it begin to gain better reception. Past studies show that online learning is a potential approach in allowing active and dynamic learning experience especially on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, despite having limitations to developing technical skills. Therefore, the present study aimed …
