Utilizing Telehealth Technology To Reduce Social Isolation And Depression In Seniors, Bohan Farrell
Utilizing Telehealth Technology To Reduce Social Isolation And Depression In Seniors, Bohan Farrell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
Background: Social isolation in the elderly has been identified as a risk factor for poor mental and physical health, as well as higher rates of mortality, depression, and cognitive decline. Loneliness is the unpleasant experience that occurs when a person’s network of social relationships is deficient in some important way, either quantitatively or qualitatively. Depression is a mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, and accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep. Physically, lonely people have more disorders, such as sleeping problems, stomach pain, and …

Telepsychiatry Preferences Among College Students Diagnosed And Undiagnosed With A Mental Health Condition, Wendy Schuh
Health Sciences Publications
College health and counseling centers report an increasing demand for mental health services while students continue to experience barriers such as shortage of providers, transportation, or stigma. Telepsychiatry has been established in some environments to overcome these barriers, but little research has explored an effective higher education model. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in telepsychiatry preferences among college students who have and have not been diagnosed with or treated for a mental health condition in the last year. Students (n = 537; Mage = 21 years; 71% female) at a medium-sized Midwestern university participated in a …

Comparison Of Patient Satisfaction With Telehealth And In-Clinic Post-Operative Visits, Lillian Matthews, Bryan Renslo, Deborah T. Glassman, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: Telehealth has grown rapidly in the healthcare industry as a time efficient, affordable, and accessible means to provide care. Jefferson’s Department of Urology currently employs telehealth for post-operative visits but its efficacy in post-nephrectomy patients has not been well studied. We aim to demonstrate that patient satisfaction is the same for telehealth versus in-clinic post-operative visits in nephrectomy patients. Secondarily we will examine distance saved for telehealth patients.
Methods: We will administer an IRB approved questionnaire to all nephrectomy patients via the EPIC® EMR platform after their post-operative visit. Each questionnaire will be specific to telehealth or …

Comparison Of Patient Satisfaction Between Telehealth And In-Clinic Post-Operative Visits, Bryan Renslo, Lillian Matthews, Deborah T. Glassman, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: Telehealth has the potential to be an efficient, affordable, and accessible means to give care. In the field of Urology, its use has large potential but has not been well studied. We hypothesize that the use of telehealth for post-op nephrectomy patients will maintain the same level of patient satisfaction. We also hypothesize that telehealth visits will take less time and save patients money by eliminating the need to travel.
Methods: From May through July 2019, post-nephrectomy patients who consented to the study were given either a telehealth or in-clinic post-operative visit. Outcome metrics and demographics information were obtained …

Getting Change-Space: A Grounded Theory Study Of Automated Ehealth Therapy, Marianne T. S. Holter, Ottar Ness, Ayna Johansen, Håvar Brendryen
The Qualitative Report
A promising tool for bettering people’s health is eHealth (or “mHealth”) programs: fully automated, web-based health interventions. However, we know surprisingly little about eHealth’s working mechanisms. One possible working mechanism is that program users benefit from a collaborative “relationship”—a “working alliance”—with the program. Although evidence support the existence of a person-to-program alliance it is unclear if and how it influences change. Therefore, we conducted a grounded theory study of how relating to an eHealth program for quitting smoking influenced the participants’ change processes. The ensuing model focuses on how participants got change-space—feeling free from social forcing and able to work …

Implementation Of A ‘Flow’ Attending Reduces Overall Ed Length Of Stay In Telehealth Intake Model, R. Fuega, K. Maloney, R. A. Band, B. H. Slovis, K. S. London, J. L. White
House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)
Background
In an effort to improve our efficiency, the Department of Emergency Medicine recently transitioned from an in person physician triage model to a telehealth intake model. With this change, many new gaps have been identified. By uncoupling triage from the in person intake provider, we lost the ability to manage “quick” discharges, to provide secondary oversight of the patients in the internal waiting room, and to directly supervise patients seen in the fast track area. In order to address these new concerns, and to mitigate the loss felt by removing the in person provider from intake, a ‘flow’ attending …

Perceptions Of Adult Patients Accessing Telehealth In An Urban Medical Group, Katharine Shepherd West
Doctoral Projects
Problem: Although implementation of in-patient electronic healthcare records is nearly complete in the United States, this achievement has not translated into consumer-to-business telehealth in the primary care setting. Because there are few studies that describe how and why patients select telehealth, the aim of this study was to learn about perceptions of adult patients in an urban setting when telehealth options are available. Research questions included a) How do patients select any type of appointment? b) How do patients perceive and use telehealth options? c) How and when might telehealth be useful in the future?
Methods: A qualitative study design …

A Multi-Level Assessment Of Healthcare Facilities Readiness, Willingness, And Ability To Adopt And Sustain Telehealth Services, Jamie Larson
Theses & Dissertations
Telehealth technologies are becoming more pervasive throughout the healthcare system as a way to provide services to patients that would otherwise have difficulty with access. Currently, little is known about the current state of telehealth use within clinics and hospital in the US. Most studies evaluating telehealth programs are feasibility or small patient outcome studies from one location. Utilizing a hybrid framework combining the levels of complex socio-technical systems with the theory of ready, willing and able. The theory of ready, willing, and able is founded on the basis that these three preconditions need to be met for a change …

Utilization Of Telehealth Technology In Addiction Treatment In Colorado, J. Michael Faragher, Ying Shan Doris Zhang, Virginia Low, Demi Folds, Mita Johnson
Counseling Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
The growing presence of electronic technology in the health service professions is redefining the boundaries of counseling services. Commonly referred to as telehealth, utilization of electronic communication strategies to expand connectedness has opened new frontiers in behavioral health through applications ranging from digital phones, interactive video sessions, to virtual supervision. Substantial research suggests that telehealth is generally equal in effectiveness to traditional forms of treatment, especially for those individuals struggling with substance abuse problems. Unfortunately, research also suggests that telehealth is often underutilized when it comes to providing addiction treatment services. Telehealth trends in Colorado were examined using a Telehealth …

Pediatric Asthma Telemonitoring: Literature, Theory, And Application To Practice, Erin Christine Shankel
Pediatric Asthma Telemonitoring: Literature, Theory, And Application To Practice, Erin Christine Shankel
DNP Projects
Asthma is one of the most prevalent and costly chronic diseases faced by Americans today. It is marked by inflammation and hyperresponsiveness of the airways which fluctuates, often unpredictably, in response to triggers. As such, it causes particular challenges symptom management, especially on the part of the patient who is tasked with dealing with these frequent fluctuations for months at a time between regularly scheduled health care appointments. This is further complicated when the patient is a child, and symptoms must be interpreted and managed second-hand by a caregiver. Uncertainty about how to manage symptoms, as well as minimization of …
