Improving Telehealth Education And Training: A Needs Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Trainees, Conor Duffy
Improving Telehealth Education And Training: A Needs Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Trainees, Conor Duffy
Theses and Dissertations
Telehealth utilization has increased dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many positive impacts of this shift to telehealth, including increasing access to care and reducing patient burden. However, healthcare providers report several consistent challenges that limit their ability to deliver telehealth, such as effective communication, technological difficulties, and difficulty performing physical examinations. To address these concerns, it is necessary to integrate telehealth education and training into healthcare professional training programs and healthcare systems. While many institutions have implemented telehealth education and training since the start of the pandemic, there is little consistency in the content, duration, …
Influence Of Telephone Preoperative Evaluations On Patient Medication Compliance On Day Of Surgery, Emmanuel Magsino, Michael Jung, Olga Suarez Md
Influence Of Telephone Preoperative Evaluations On Patient Medication Compliance On Day Of Surgery, Emmanuel Magsino, Michael Jung, Olga Suarez Md

Patient compliance with medication instructions on day of surgery (DOS) is an important part of the preoperative assessment, as failure to comply with these may lead to serious perioperative consequences. Prior studies have shown that compliance increases with multimodal interventions. However due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person visits transitioned to telephone visits and providers had to rely on patients to follow solely verbal instructions.
To determine medication compliance, this study compared the medication instructions provided by the VCU Preoperative Assessment Communication and Education Clinic, per chart review, with each patient’s own report of which medications they took on …
Bridging The Digital Divide: A Risk-Based “Telehealth Needs” Scoring Model For Patient Outcome Prediction, Cindy Ann Crump
Bridging The Digital Divide: A Risk-Based “Telehealth Needs” Scoring Model For Patient Outcome Prediction, Cindy Ann Crump
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research was to develop a predictive model of the effect of patient characteristics on outcomes and resource utilization in telehealth interventions for chronic disease management. Clinical studies have shown high variability in telehealth across settings and populations. The central hypothesis of this study was that patient characteristics, including disease type, illness severity, demographic information, and socio-technical preferences play a role in determining telehealth intervention outcomes. A non-experimental, retrospective study evaluated the feasibility of creating a Telehealth Needs score using Medicare and Medicaid claims data from 2016 to 2017. Claims were summarized into de-identified cases to train …

Background: The opioid and heroin overdose epidemic is a public health emergency in the state of Virginia, resulting in the death of more than 1,100 people in 2016. In order to overcome this epidemic, we need to match the places with the greatest need for services related to substance use disorders with the appropriate healthcare workforce.
Aims: As the data about the overdose outbreak and related socioeconomic factors grow in size and complexity, data scientists have attempted to utilize big data techniques to identify communities and risk factors contributing to addiction.
Methods: Using data obtained from the …
Enhancing Adherence To Prescribed Opioids Using A Mobile-Base Application: A Pilot Study Of Feasibility In Chronic Non-Cancer Pain, Daniel M. Sop
Enhancing Adherence To Prescribed Opioids Using A Mobile-Base Application: A Pilot Study Of Feasibility In Chronic Non-Cancer Pain, Daniel M. Sop
Theses and Dissertations
In this study we present feasibility of a mobile monitoring and reporting system that would provide an accurate unbiased screening tool to systematically analyze opioid adherence in Sickle cell disease patients. In addition, the software simultaneously measures pain. The Mobile Applications Rating Scale: a new and validated tool for assessing the quality of health mobile apps for engagement, functionality, aesthetics, information quality, subjective quality, relevance and overall impact was administered post usage to evaluate the application.
A total of 28 patients were recruited to review and test the software at one sitting. The majority of the population found the application …

Telemedicine offers both soft and hard return on investment, including cost savings avoidance and convenience of access to care. Incarcerated individuals represent a patient population that uniquely benefit from receiving care via telemedicine. They lack access to subspecialty care as prison facilities are located outside of urban areas, which is compounded by security risks, risk to individuals around inmates, and transportation cost to tertiary care facilities. To attend a brief in-office medical visit, an inmate requires hours of administrative support and logistical coordination, including appointment scheduling, transport arrangement and related fuel expense, and guard accompaniment - all at a financial …

Background: Opioid and heroin overdose epidemic is a public health emergency in the state of Virginia. In order to prevent overdose deaths, we need the target expertise in substance use disorders to areas with high rates of overdose. In particular, an area with an acute spike in overdoses might represent an urgent need for intervention.
Aims: The CDC urges the use of near real-time surveillance to effectively identify overdose incidence, and to coordinate community responses in the states affected by the epidemic, including Virginia. However, current opioid overdose datasets for Virginia lack adequate consistency, granularity, and temporality for …
