A Lattice Boltzmann Subgrid Model For High Reynolds Number Flows, S. Hou, James D. Sterling, S. Chen, G. D. Doolen Jan 1996

A Lattice Boltzmann Subgrid Model For High Reynolds Number Flows, S. Hou, James D. Sterling, S. Chen, G. D. Doolen

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sub grid turbulence model for the lattice Boltzmann method is proposed for high Reynolds number fluid flow applications. The method, based on the standard Smagorinsky sub grid model and a single-time relaxation lattice Boltzmann method, incorporates the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method for handling arbitrary boundaries and is easily implemented on parallel machines. The method is applied to a two-dimensional driven cavity flow for studying dynamics and the Reynolds number dependence of the flow structures. The substitution of other sub grid models, such as the dynamic sub grid model, in the framework of the LB method is discussed.

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling Jan 1996

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article we report steady, two-dimensional, inviscid solutions for the near field and far field of a supersonic reactive flow over a variable-double-ramp geometry. The incident shock wave compresses and heats the reactants that will combust after flowing some induction length. Upon reaction, a detonation wave forms and intersects the leading wave at some distance from the ramp surface. In this article, reaction-polar diagrams are developed, and the detonation branch solutions are used to investigate the wave interaction processes that may lead to a steady three-wave structure. By considering this formation process new oblique detonation wave stabilization criteria based …

Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling Jan 1996

Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we analyze the reflection of non-reacting shock waves as oblique detonation waves. The 2D, steady, inviscid analysis makes use of detonation polar diagrams to identify incident shock angles that lead to reflected detonations, with and without detonation Mach stem formation. The implications of the results for design and operation of superdetonative ram accelerators are explored. The influence of the projectile forebody geometry, the propellant composition, and the takeover velocity is described. We conclude with a discussion of the significance of these parameters on superdetonative ram accelerator unstart phenomena.

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota Jan 1996

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we discuss the cyclic operation of an enhanced combustion pulsejet engine (ECPE) applicable in the Mach number range of 0 to 3. The geometry of this engine naturally provides for integration into a new combined cycle engine with ramjets. As in the operation of conventional pulsejets, an ECPE provides engine aspiration, charge compression, combustion and expansion without the use of turbomachinery. The use of modern electronics, fuel injection, and feedback control offers the potential for performance improvements that could make the ECPE a cost-effective competitor for the turbojet engine. This article describes the operating cycle of a …

Computerized Patient Records And Np Practice., Polly A. Hulme Jan 1995

Computerized Patient Records And Np Practice., Polly A. Hulme

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Computer-based patient records (CPRs) are becoming increasingly common in ambulatory settings. The advantages of computer-based patient records over paper records are multiple: they save space and time, help health care providers improve patient care, and provide clinical and managerial information quickly. Currently, however, this software is based on the medical model. The software for computer-based patient records was developed about 25 years ago in academic health care settings, but was never disseminated extensively into other types of ambulatory settings. Now, however, with the advent of more powerful personal computers (PCs), this innovation is commercially available for smaller ambulatory practices.

Stability And Resolution In Thermal Imaging, Lester Caudill, Kurt Bryan Jan 1995

Stability And Resolution In Thermal Imaging, Lester Caudill, Kurt Bryan

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper examines an inverse problem which arises in thermal imaging. We investigate the problem of detecting and imaging corrosion in a material sample by applying a heat flux and measuring the induced temperature on the sample's exterior boundary. The goal is to identify the profile of some inaccessible portion of the boundary. We study the case in which one has data at every point on the boundary of the region, as well as the case in which only finitely many measurements are available. An inversion procedure is developed and used to study the stability of the inverse problem for …

Information Control And Security Policy In Health Care Information Systems, Binshan Lin, Lawrence Clark Jan 1994

Information Control And Security Policy In Health Care Information Systems, Binshan Lin, Lawrence Clark

Journal of International Information Management

The reliance on information systems forces the health care organizations to consider two security management issues: information control and security policy. The objective of this article is to examine a direction to effectively support and enhance the health care delivery through information systems in hospitals. An integrated focus is provided through an information control framework for analyzing the three control elements: accessibility, confidentiality, and integrity. The security policy involves three aspects: prevention of unauthorized access into the system, controlling the input and output of the system, and monitoring the health care information systems. The framework has implications for research beyond …

Managed Competition, Integrated Delivery Systems And Antitrust, Thomas L. Greaney Jan 1994

Managed Competition, Integrated Delivery Systems And Antitrust, Thomas L. Greaney

All Faculty Scholarship

A central question confronting proponents of managed competition during the health reform debate in 1994 was whether competitive networks or integrated delivery systems would emerge. Under reformers’ vision, controlling costs depended on the emergence of a sufficient number of efficient and viable integrated delivery systems. Conversely, if one or a few integrated networks dominate the market for physician or hospital services, rivalry on the main issues of health care cost control would likely dissipate. This article argues that vigilant and sensible antitrust enforcement was also a prerequisite for the success of the managed competition model. Despite the considerable emphasis on …

Dynamic Decision Modeling In Medicine: A Critique Of Existing Formalisms, Tze-Yun Leong Dec 1993

Dynamic Decision Modeling In Medicine: A Critique Of Existing Formalisms, Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dynamic decision models are frameworks for modeling and solving decision problems that take into explicit account the effects of time. These formalisms are based on structural and semantical extensions of conventional decision models, e.g., decision trees and influence diagrams, with the mathematical definitions of finite-state semi-Markov processes. This paper identifies the common theoretical basis of existing dynamic decision modeling formalisms, and compares and contrasts their applicability and efficiency. It also argues that a subclass of such dynamic decision problems can be formulated and solved more effectively with non-graphical techniques. Some insights gained from this exercise on automating the dynamic decision …

Health Care Information Systems Management: Structure And Infrastructure, Binshan Lin Jan 1993

Health Care Information Systems Management: Structure And Infrastructure, Binshan Lin

Journal of International Information Management

The practice of medicine is inextricably entwined with the management of health care information system (HCIS). Major problems with HCIS are that it has not evolved from the needs of end users, and lacks of an organizational base^ to manage the HCIS in the health care environment. The object of this paper is to examine a direction to effectively support and enhance the health care activities through managing HCIS. An integrated focus is provided through a framework for analyzing the structure and infrastructure of HCIS in hospitals.

Applying A Systems Approach To Mis Design For Occupational Health Care Delivery, Charmayne Cullom Jan 1993

Applying A Systems Approach To Mis Design For Occupational Health Care Delivery, Charmayne Cullom

Journal of International Information Management

Decision making in occupational health care management is complex due to the various parties involved in receiving, delivering, and/or paying for^ these services. This paper presents the view of MIS to support occupational health care as a system using Anthony's Paradigm to provide the decision making structure. Informational requirements reflect the hierarchy of strategic, tactical, and operational levels. A matrix of occupational health care services, responsibilities, and participants is utilized. Such matrix provides the foundation to couple needs and requirements of all participants with information system specifications.

Lattice Boltzmann Thermohydrodynamics, F. J. Alexander, S. Chen, J. D. Sterling Jan 1993

Lattice Boltzmann Thermohydrodynamics, F. J. Alexander, S. Chen, J. D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce a lattice Boltzmann computational scheme capable of modeling thermohydrodynamic flows of monatomic gases. The parallel nature of this approach provides a numerically efficient alternative to traditional methods of computational fluid dynamics. The scheme uses a small number of discrete velocity states and a linear, single-time relaxation collision operator. Numerical simulations in two dimensions agree well with exact solutions for adiabatic sound propagation and Couette flow with heat transfer. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Technology In Clinical Practice And The "Technological Ethic", John W. Murphy, John T. Pardeck Mar 1988

Technology In Clinical Practice And The "Technological Ethic", John W. Murphy, John T. Pardeck

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Computers are being introduced into practically every area of clinical practice. The use of this technology by practitioners has not gone unchallenged. Specifically, new ethical problems are thought to be associated with using computers to make clinical assessments. Logistical and procedural difficulties, however, have been the primary focus of concern. In this paper the critique of computerized evaluation is expanded, with attention directed to the computer "micro-world." Because the computer micro-world consists of several unwarranted assumptions about the nature of social reality, clinical practice may be affected in many undesireable ways. The theoretical underside of computer use is illustrated to …

Effect Of Storage On The Elastic Properties Of The Red Cell Membrane, Caroline M. Ballweg Jun 1978

Effect Of Storage On The Elastic Properties Of The Red Cell Membrane, Caroline M. Ballweg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The goal for the preservation of blood is the optimal survival and function of the stored blood after reinfusion. In vivo means of assessing viability after storage would be ideal but these survival studies are expensive, involved, and not without danger. Thus, in vitro means have been sought to evaluate preservation. The most frequently used of the in vitro tests for predicting red blood cell survival is deformability.

This study applies a recently developed method of measuring deformability to assess changes in stored blood. In brief, the method involves drawing a "mini" unit of blood from each of three normal …

The Requirement For Viable Platelets In The Coagulation Of Heparinized Blood, Karen L. Hay Aug 1975

The Requirement For Viable Platelets In The Coagulation Of Heparinized Blood, Karen L. Hay

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Activated coagulation times (ACT's) of heparinized blood or plasma samples containing normal platelets were compared with ACT’s of heparinized samples containing non-viable or abnormally functional platelets. The non-viable platelets were prepared by freeze/thawing, and the abnormally functional platelets resulted from the addition of adenosine or adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP).

The ACT’s of the heparinized samples containing treated platelets were considerably longer than the ACT’s performed on samples with untreated platelets. Treated platelets had no effect on unheparinized samples, however. This would indicate that, although platelet factor 3 (PF3) is sufficient to promote clotting of unheparinized blood, viable platelets, in addition, are …
