Background: Current testing of symptomatic patients for SARS-CoV-2 involves the use of nucleic acid amplification tests, also known as genetic, RNA, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), to detect viral RNA. The initial use of point of care (POC) antibody tests, also known as serological tests, in the management of SARS-CoV-2 infection was limited. Understanding individual’s exercise motives, participation patterns in a gym and reasons for dropout are essential for designing strategies to help gym-goers with long-term exercise adherence. In this work, we derive insights on various exercise-related behaviors of gymgoers, including evidence of a significant number of individuals exhibiting early dropout and also describing their attitudes towards digital technologies for sustained gym participation. By utilizing gym visitation data logs of 6513 individuals over a longitudinal period of 16 months in a campus gym, we show the retention and dropout rates of gym-goers. We examined the frequency of positive stool SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in COVID-19 patients, duration of stool viral shedding after the viral clearance of respiratory samples, and the association of SARS-CoV-2 infection with gastrointestinal symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature and effects of exchanging emotional support via a smartphone-based support group for patients with alcohol dependence. Of the 349 patients who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) criteria for alcohol dependence, 153 patients participated in the discussion group within the Addiction-Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System, a smartphone application aimed at reducing relapse. Introduction: Social distancing has been utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2; it is also expected to reduce the spread of common respiratory viruses.

Methods: This retrospective, descriptive study assessed the rate of positivity of common respiratory viruses from a commercially available respiratory pathogen panel across a five-hospital health system during four-week periods within March to April of 2019 and 2020.

BACKGROUND: Despite the introduction of new insulin analogs, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), young children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) remain vulnerable to episodes of hypoglycemia because of their unpredictable eating and activity patterns and high degree of insulin sensitivity. Caregivers and young children living with T1D learn to fear hypoglycemia because it is uncomfortable, unpredictable, and dangerous. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, facilitated telemedicine encounters were available at outreach locations; however, our tertiary children’s hospital had not invested widely in direct to patient telemedicine. Our daily pediatric subspecialty visits dropped from an average of 2066 visits a day prior to COVID-19 in our community to 1000 patients a day during the study period. With a few exceptions, the biomedical industry, and the informatics field in particular, have not been affected by the standards litigation that has plagued the ICT sector. But with the increasing adoption of standards by informatics researchers and vendors, the issues faced by ICT standards groups will become increasingly relevant. This chapter summarizes general legal issues associated with standards development, then surveys standardization efforts in the informatics space and reviews the policies and procedures adopted by SDOs operating in the informatics area. It concludes with recommendations regarding prudent policy adoption by SDOs developing standards for informatics applications.

Electronic medical record (EMR) systems can improve patient care and their usages are mandatory in many health care organizations. Yet, some physicians engaged in workaround behaviors as a response to their negative experiences in using EMR. Leveraging protection motivation theory, we propose a theoretical framework to understand what causes physicians to use EMR systems less effectively. We posit that EMR systems’ usability and physicians’ technology capability affect their appraisal of threats associated with EMR use, which in turn influences their workaround behaviors. We conclude with some implications to research and practice, and opportunities for future research.

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) demonstrate persistent knowledge gaps regarding their condition and a substandard adherence to oral anticoagulant (OAC) medication, which contribute to thromboembolic stroke and other clot-related complications. Tailored patient education and medication reminders may help reduce these negative health outcomes. We sought to improve disease knowledge and medication adherence among a sample of AF patients using tailored education and nudges.
