Introduction: The potential exists for patient harm when clinicians do not respond to clinical results in a timely manner. Much of the research on asynchronous electronic notifications (pager, cellphone or wearable devices) comes from home-grown electronic health records (EHR). Little is known about factors influencing notifications from vendor-based EHRs and the effect of subscription-based notifications, where providers select which results for notification. This study investigates what factors influence a clinician’s decision to order result notifications, the perceived role of these notifications in the clinical setting, and ways to improve notifications in a vendor-based EHR.

Background: KardiaMobile is a mobile ECG device, with smartphone connectivity, that is able to detect atrial fibrillation (a-fib). The device captures a 30 second reading and an algorithm differentiates a-fib from sinus rhythm. The mobile application can alert the user to an a-fib reading and also send the ECG output to their personal physician. By monitoring a-fib without accessing traditional care, KardiaMobile has the potential to reduce healthcare costs for patients with a-fib. This pilot study explored an embedded librarian (EL) intervention to enhance occupational therapy student information literacy skills development. Aim: To determine if a four-week fundamental motor skills intervention improves fundamental motor skills in Irish school children. Methods: 100 Primary School boys (n = 58) and girls (n = 42) participated in this study (Age 9 ± 1 years, equally divided into a control and intervention group. Proficiency was assessed qualitatively using the Fundamental Motor Skills Quotient (FMSQ) pre and post intervention, and between gender. Reducing hospital acquired or associated infections (HAIs) is a national public health priority. HAIs pose risks to patients, visitors, and medical personnel. To better understand how to communicatively manage safety in medical isolation, data was collected with nursing students simulating medical isolation in a high-fidelity simulation with a medical mannequin with C. difficile. Observations of nursing students and faculty revealed four distinct communication practices: social support, patient education, humor, and storytelling. Conclusions include recommendations to intentionally design these communication practices into high-fidelity medial isolation simulations and scale up these communication practices in routines of safety.
