Heart failure (HF) is a complex chronic illness that affects the older adult population, requiring medical therapy and day-to-day management to prevent worsening and exacerbation. Patients with HF are often treated with cardiac implanted electronic devices (CIEDs) which capture diagnostic and predictive parameters for HF. In this work we explore how patients would respond to receiving data from an implanted device, using a fictitious scenario interview method with 24 older adults with HF. We applied an uncertainty management lens to better understand how patients face uncertain outcomes and integrate novel data into their decision making. The findings provide insight into …

Valid design of patient-centered digital health or health information technology (IT) systems is based on a thorough and accurate understanding of both “user reality” and “clinical reality.” Type 1 Design Error (User-Reality Error) occurs when designers do not accommodate user characteristics, tasks, context of use, needs, or preferences. Type 2 Design Error (Clinical-Reality Error) occurs when designers do not accommodate the clinical reality, including biomedical knowledge, clinical workflows, and organizational requirements. Both types of errors can invalidate the design, leading to products being rejected by patient end-users or their healthcare delivery systems, product non-use or inappropriate use, and risk of …

Patients with heart failure (HF) are commonly implanted with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices as part of their treatment. Presently, they cannot directly access the remote monitoring (RM) data generated from these devices, representing a missed opportunity for increased knowledge and engagement in care. However, electronic health data sharing can create information overload issues for both clinicians and patients, and some older patients may not be comfortable using the technology (i.e., computers and smartphones) necessary to access this data. To mitigate these problems, patients can be directly involved in the creation of data visualization tailored to their preferences and needs, …

BACKGROUND: The widespread availability and cost-effectiveness of new-wave software-based audience response systems (ARSs) have expanded the possibilities of collecting health data from hard-to-reach populations, including youth. However, with all survey methods, biases in the data may exist because of participant nonresponse.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (1) examine the extent to which an ARS could be used to gather health information from youths within a large-group school setting and (2) examine individual- and survey-level response biases stemming from this Web-based data collection method.
METHODS: We used an ARS to deliver a mental health survey to 3418 youths …

ABSTRACT: Eating disorders (EDs) are a worldwide public health concern that impact approximately 10% of the U.S. population. Our previous research characterized these behaviors across online spaces. These characterizations have used clinical terminology, and their lexical variants, to identify ED content online. However, previous HCI research on EDs (including our own) suffers from a lack of gender and cultural diversity. In this paper, we designed a follow-up study of online ED characterizations, extending our previous methodologies to focus specifically on male/masculine-related content. We highlight the similarities and differences found in the terminology utilized and media archetypes associated with the social …

The Protective Influence Of Relationship Commitment On The Effects Of Facebook Addiction On Marital Disaffection, Irum Saeed Abbasi, Michelle Drouin, Jayson L. Dibble, Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd
Health Services and Informatics Research
ABSTRACT Previous research has suggested that Facebook use can lead to adverse romantic relationship outcomes due to interpersonal conflicts, interactions with potential romantic alternatives, and jealousy. However, these associations have been explored mainly with undergraduates, focusing primarily on conflict rather than emotional disengagement. The current study examined the associations between Facebook addiction and marital disaffection (e.g., loss of love, emotional disengagement) amongst 138 (95 females and 43 males) cohabiting married Facebook users residing in the United States. The results revealed that Facebook addiction and marital disaffection were positively related, even after controlling for relationship commitment. Additionally, greater relationship commitment weakened …

The couple and coparenting relationships are demonstrated to be prospectively and bidirectionally associated over months to years during the early parenting years. However, little is known about these associations at the daily level within the first year of parenthood, when coparenting first emerges. The goal of the current study was to examine the association between couples' daily feelings of relationship closeness and coparenting support in first-time parents and determine directionality of these effects using a dyadic daily diary design. At 10 months postpartum, heterosexual couples (

Data Integration And Interoperability For Patient-Centered Remote Monitoring Of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices, Carly Daley, Tammy Toscos Phd, Michael Mirro
Mirro Center Articles
Abstract: The prevalence of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices with remote monitoring capabilities continues to grow, resulting in increased volume and complexity of biomedical data. These data can provide diagnostic information for timely intervention and maintenance of implanted devices, improving quality of care. Current remote monitoring procedures do not utilize device diagnostics to their potential, due to the lack of interoperability and data integration among proprietary systems and electronic medical record platforms. However, the development of a technical framework that standardizes the data and improves interoperability shows promise for improving remote monitoring. Along with encouraging the implementation of this framework, we …

Computational Exploration Of Gerontology-Related Topics Shared On Social Media Platform Twitter, Victor P. Cornet Ms, Michin Hong
Health Services and Informatics Research
Twitter, a popular Internet social media platform, has become a significant medium for sharing information and ideas about various topics, including aging and older adults. While studies have been conducted to examine stigma or perception about specific diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and seizure on Twitter, there has been little effort to identify general themes of Twitter posts related to aging and older adults. This exploratory study attempts to answer this need by conducting a topic analysis of posts shared on Twitter posts about aging and older adults in English. We collected 328,568 English posts from Twitter posted between 07/01/18 …

Maintaining Relationship Alternatives Electronically: Positive Relationship Maintenance In Back Burner Relationships, Jayson L. Dibble, Narissra M. Punyanunt-Carter, Michelle Drouin
Health Services and Informatics Research
Back burners are desired prospective romantic/sexual partners that people communicate with to establish a future romantic or sexual relationship. We surveyed 658 college students about the extent to which they reported using various positive relationship maintenance strategies (positivity, openness, assurances) during communication with their most important back burner. Consistent with previous research, singles did not differ from those in committed romances in the number of back burners reported; however, singles and casual daters utilized the positive maintenance strategies to a greater extent than did those in committed relationships. Men reported using more assurances than did women, but the sexes did …

Technoference: Parent Distraction With Technology And Associations With Child Behavior Problems., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jenny S Radesky
Health Services and Informatics Research
Heavy parent digital technology use has been associated with suboptimal parent-child interactions, but no studies examine associations with child behavior. This study investigates whether parental problematic technology use is associated with technology-based interruptions in parent-child interactions, termed "technoference," and whether technoference is associated with child behavior problems. Parent reports from 170 U.S. families (child age = 3.04 years) and actor-partner interdependence modeling showed that maternal and paternal problematic digital technology use predicted greater technoference in mother-child and father-child interactions; then, maternal technoference predicted both mothers' and fathers' reports of child externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Results suggest that technological interruptions are …

Health Services and Informatics Research
Background: Prevention of thromboembolism is key in individuals with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and nonadherence to oral anticoagulant (OAC) therapy is a frequent causative factor of stroke. Many factors contribute to the complexity of medication nonadherence. Thus, education aimed at changing health behaviors must be tailored to address the unique internal motivations and information needs of those confronted with the daily choice to take a medication to prevent stroke. Delivery of tailored health education and medication reminders may be an effective way to empower individuals with NVAF and in consequence, improve OAC adherence.
Methods: We applied a patient-centered approach and …

The Double-Edged Sword: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Interplay Between Bipolar Disorder And Technology Use, Mark Matthews, Elizabeth Murnane, Jaime Snyder, Shion Guha Phd, Pamara Chang, Gavin Doherty, Geri Gay
Health Services and Informatics Research
Human behavior is increasingly reflected or acted out through technology. This is of particular salience when it comes to changes in behavior associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early detection is crucial for these conditions but presently very challenging to achieve. Potentially, characteristics of these conditions’ traits and symptoms, at both idiosyncratic and collective levels, may be detectable through technology use patterns. In bipolar disorder specifically, initial evidence associates changes in mood with changes in technology-mediated communication patterns. However much less is known about how people with bipolar disorder use technology more generally in their lives, …
