Advancing Safe Medication Administration During Pediatric Emergency Care Through Nurse Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Ciera Hunter
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Due to the increased complexities of pediatric medication administration, preventable errors occur at a higher rate than in general adult populations. Rural emergency departments (EDs) often see fewer pediatric patients and have less specialized support available on-site. Nurse continuing education is an evidence-based intervention to reduce medication administration errors making it vital to supporting patient safety and maintaining pediatric readiness.
Local Problem: The microsystem is a rural, critical access hospital in northern New England. In 2021, the microsystem scored 66/81 on the National Pediatric Readiness Project’s (NPRP’s) ED Assessment. In 2026, the score dropped 11 points to 55/81. Contributing …

Differences In Emergency Department Imaging Modalities For Femur Fractures Based On Insurance And Demographics, Patrick De La Torre Schutz, Bryce M. Bellon, Daniel Salinas, Kelsey Baker, Hamaad Gohar
Research Colloquium
Insurance status and race have been significant predictors of delayed care and reduced imaging utilization in emergency settings, particularly among minority and Medicaid-insured populations (Moser, Shan). The reasoning for the disparities in treatment for these underserved populations is still not well understood. To further analyze these claims, this study examined whether demographic factors such as ethnicity, sex, age, insurance type, and fracture classification were associated with differences in imaging modality among patients with femur fractures. Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services Trauma Registry (2018–2022) was analyzed using logistic regression to determine the odds ratios of receiving CT, …

Implementation Of A Triage System For The Residents At A Residential Facility To Improve Triage Assessment Skills Of The Staff As Well As Improve The Level And Timeliness Of Care, Andrew J. Choi Rn, Neha Gopal Rn, Andres N. Padilla Rn, Dana Son
Master's Projects and Capstones
Triage is an integral part of the clinical process which involves assessing patients and determining their level of care in order to get them appropriate, timely treatment. Several countries utilize a standardized triage system with established criteria to aid staff in their decision-making during assessments (Peta et al., 2023). The Nursing and Residential Triage (NaRT) tool, from the Manchester Triage System (MTS), was shown to enhance staff clinical assessment skills and help avoid inappropriate ED transfers during a study among older adults in a residential facility (Markey et al., 2024). For this project, the main issue identified at the residential …
Implementing A Team-Based Approach To Reduce Blood Culture Contamination Rates In The Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Melissa Lockhart
Implementing A Team-Based Approach To Reduce Blood Culture Contamination Rates In The Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Melissa Lockhart
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Blood culture contaminations (BCC) present significant risks to patients, including adverse drug reactions and the exacerbation of antibiotic resistance. BCC can also result in millions of dollars in financial burdens for hospitals due to the need for follow-up testing, treatment complications, and antibiotic stewardship efforts. At this facility, the contamination rate in the emergency department (ED) consistently exceeds the national benchmark of 3%. Contributing factors include high patient turnover and increased nursing workloads, which can lead to shortcuts in essential practices such as hand hygiene and skin disinfection before collection.
Purpose: This project aimed to evaluate whether implementing a …

Patient Throughput In The Emergency Department, Daniel Alanis
MSN Capstone Projects
In response to ongoing overcrowding in emergency departments, it is imperative to explore effective strategies for mitigating the capacity crises. The purpose of this project is to investigate and implement throughput strategies for a large level 1 trauma emergency department in Houston’s Texas Medical Center. The proposal involves launching a process improvement project to identify opportunity potential for two main interventions: 1. Patient classification for split clinical pathways 2. Dedicated liaison role for throughput responsibilities. The review aims to answer the question: In emergency department patients, how does the implementation of a dedicated throughput liaison compared to a split flow …

Patient Satisfaction Informs Improvement Strategies In Emergency Department, Esmat Swallmeh
Patient Satisfaction Informs Improvement Strategies In Emergency Department, Esmat Swallmeh
Doctoral
Recently, patient satisfaction has become one of the key performance indicators used to measure the performance of healthcare institutions and has emerged as a primary strategic indicator of quality and efficacy within the healthcare system. Inadequate care of patient experience in acute hospitals may negatively impact patients’ adherence, readmission rates and mortality. This dissertation critically evaluates over 2,000 peer-reviewed papers relevant to patient satisfaction within the emergency department (ED) environment. It describes the theories, tools, determinants, and methods to increase patient satisfaction. Despite growing attention to patient satisfaction, the academic literature still lacks a comprehensive overview. In addition, the literature …
Emergency Department Patient Navigator Post Chest Pain Diagnosis Discharge, Nancy Simoes
Emergency Department Patient Navigator Post Chest Pain Diagnosis Discharge, Nancy Simoes
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract The most common complaint seen in the Emergency Department, along with abdominal pain, is nonspecific chest pain. Often, these complaints cause prolonged lengths of stay in the ED, followed by hospital admissions and subsequent readmissions for various reasons. When thinking about these various reasons, the question for prevention of readmission comes to mind. What could we do as a department to keep patients from continuously using the Emergency Department as a primary point of care instead of outpatient facilities when necessary? Project Aim: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to initiate the need for a patient navigator …

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Abstract
Background
Older adult patients (≥65) accessing emergency departments (ED) represent a significant demographic. Recidivism secondary to adverse drug events (ADE) ranges between 6-24% and levels of prescribed medication non-adherence is common among older adults. The ED pharmacist medication reconciliation workflow may mitigate self-management challenges in real time and reduce medication-related harm while potentially impacting recidivism, medication adherence, and patient self-efficacy. The purposes of this evidence-based project were to (1) evaluate the impact of a modified Medication Management for Deficiencies in the Elderly (MedMalDE) intervention on Self-Efficacy for Appropriate Medication Use (SEAMS) and 30-day return to care and (2) identify …
