Educating Healthcare Providers To Prevent And Mitigate The Effects Of Zoom Fatigue, Andrea Lima
Educating Healthcare Providers To Prevent And Mitigate The Effects Of Zoom Fatigue, Andrea Lima
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Zoom Fatigue (ZF), or physical and neuropsychological responses to excessive videoconferencing (VC), increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like burnout, ZF can compromise patient safety by causing decreased job satisfaction, social isolation, disrupted focus, and difficulty empathizing with patients. This Plan-Do-Study-Act quality improvement project aimed to assess feelings about VC, raise awareness of the adverse effects of overuse, and empower primary care providers (PCPs) to improve their work experiences. A group of on-site PCPs at a tertiary care medical center in the Southwest, who continued holding exclusive virtual team meetings after the pandemic, was asked to complete the 15-question Zoom Exhaustion …
Implementation Of A Health Care Transition Pathway For Children And Adults With Inborn Errors Of Metabolism: A Pilot Project, Brittany M. Murray
Implementation Of A Health Care Transition Pathway For Children And Adults With Inborn Errors Of Metabolism: A Pilot Project, Brittany M. Murray
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Children with medically complex diseases require highly specialized care by a highly specialized team. Those with rare disease, including inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), are a medically complex population and face significant challenges undergoing the health care transition from a child/family-centered model to an adult/patient-centered model of care. The project site follows patients with IEMs in the Metabolism Program, but previously did not have a coordinated process and had insufficient resources for patients/families for the health care transition.
Methods: The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) method was utilized as the model for improvement. Due to the complexity of the population and time …
Implementation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Video Telehealth Program To Improve Triage For Pediatric Patients In An Ambulatory Intestinal Rehabilitation Center, Elizabeth Castle
Implementation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Video Telehealth Program To Improve Triage For Pediatric Patients In An Ambulatory Intestinal Rehabilitation Center, Elizabeth Castle
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Children with short bowel syndrome are medically complex, requiring specialized management and coordinated care to address acute triage issues between scheduled visits. Their risk for rapid decompensation and distance from specialty centers often necessitates telephone-based triage—a typically non-reimbursable method. At a leading Northeastern U.S. children’s hospital, the Intestinal Rehabilitation (IR) center manages high-risk telephone triage of these patients’ concerns using experienced nurse practitioners. The inability to directly visualize patients during telephone encounters, however, limits clinical assessment and decision-making, presenting challenges to efficient and safe care delivery. A systematic literature review indicated that telehealth can enhance parental confidence, improve clinician …

According to the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) affects approximately 537 million people, representing approximately 10% of the worldwide population aged 20 to 79. Approximately 400,000 people with DM use continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pumps. CSII pump therapy mimics pancreatic insulin release, aiding in maintaining adequate insulin levels. Individuals with DM are more likely to require surgery than individuals without the disease. Among diabetics, people with Type 1 DM (T1D) are more likely to need medical interventions than individuals with Type 2 DM (T2DM). CSII therapy maintains blood glucose levels within a programmed range and decreases blood glucose …
Online Diabetes Program Improving Nurses' Competency In School-Age Diabetes Care, Kristina Donovan
Online Diabetes Program Improving Nurses' Competency In School-Age Diabetes Care, Kristina Donovan
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Diabetes affects over 280,000 children under 20 in the US, requiring specialized knowledge and skills for management. In a large urban school district with 54,000 students, 159 have diabetes, cared for by 158 school nurses. These nurses often struggle with the complexities of diabetes care and lack standardized training, leading to potential suboptimal care. An online diabetes education program was implemented to improve their competency, knowledge and skills, and confidence in managing diabetes in school-age children.
Methods: An asynchronous online competency-based diabetes education program to improve nurses’ competency to care for school-age children with diabetes was implemented in an …
Implementation Of A Standardized Acute Care Plan For Complex Care Medicine Service Patients: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Tracy Markwell
Implementation Of A Standardized Acute Care Plan For Complex Care Medicine Service Patients: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Tracy Markwell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Care transition plans, locally called Acute Care Plans (ACPs), are created specifically for super utilizers of the Complex Care Medicine Service (CCMS) and are a target for improvement. The purpose of this project was to improve care for CCMS patients by developing, implementing, and evaluating a standardized CCMS ACP. A multidisciplinary approach was chosen to facilitate the transitions of care process during an admission or discharge from the hospital.
LOCAL PROBLEM: The purpose of the ACP is to get a quick summary of how to treat a patient when they come to the hospital. The ACPs are …
Evaluating Nurses’ Turnover Intention And Organizational Commitment Following Stroke Unit Staffing Changes: An Evidence-Based Quality Initiative, Heather Tatusko
Evaluating Nurses’ Turnover Intention And Organizational Commitment Following Stroke Unit Staffing Changes: An Evidence-Based Quality Initiative, Heather Tatusko
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Nurses are known to be overworked, overwhelmed, undervalued, and understaffed at dangerous levels throughout various inpatient hospital units across the United States (U.S.). Hospital registered nurse (RN) turnover is a significant issue that has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in economic impacts and other burdens for organizations, individuals, and communities. Evidence suggests that evaluating Registered Nurses’ Turnover intention (NTI) and Organizational Commitment (OC) can help maintain a ready and capable team of skilled RNs; however, most healthcare organizations (HCOs) do not collect or analyze NTI and OC data and focus on staffing numbers and monetary incentives to get adequate …

The final scholarly project proposal is to implement oral care education for nurses in an intensive care unit (ICU). The proposal aims to create a guideline for an investigator to implement oral care recommendations for mechanically ventilated patients in order to reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The proposal consists of obtaining VAP data and oral care charting data for the unit studied, steps for providing oral care education, and analysis recommendations. Oral care involves swabbing the patient’s mouth every two hours with a swab and mouthwash. Oral care education would include handouts and direct teaching. The proposal aims to increase oral …

A Mindfulness Approach To Regulate Depressive-Associated Emotional Eating, Jillian G. Montefusco
A Mindfulness Approach To Regulate Depressive-Associated Emotional Eating, Jillian G. Montefusco
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Depression affects 350 to 500 million people globally, with depressive-associated emotional eating (DAEE) impacting approximately 43.5% of these individuals. Depressive-associated emotional eating contributes to obesity through poor dietary choices and weight gain, leading to the projection that by 2048 all United States citizens will be overweight or obese.
Local Problem: At a Chicago weight loss center, the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire screened 75 patients, revealing that 56% (N = 42) ate more during sadness, boredom, and loneliness, and 50.7% (N = 38) ate more during depression, indicating significant DAEE.
Methods: This quasi-experimental quality improvement project uses a pre- and post-evaluation …
Pectoralis Nerve Block Compared To Thoracic Paravertebral Nerve Block In The Mastectomy Patient: Evidence-Based Practice Recommendations, Eric Boyer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Patients undergoing a mastectomy are at increased risk of becoming opioid dependent. Most patients undergoing a mastectomy are diagnosed with breast cancer, and the use of opioids is known to aid in cancer metastasizing due to the suppression of the body's natural killer cells. In addition, regional anesthesia, also known as a nerve block, has long provided a reduction in sensation by blocking the nerve pathway, thus numbing the feeling of pain in the operative area. The Pectoralis nerve block (PECS) and the Thoracic Paravertebral block (TPVB) are used in patients undergoing a mastectomy to help reduce the severity of …

The healthcare industry is highly regulated to ensure patients receive safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. Even with these regulations, patient outcomes remain poor, given the high expenditure and percentage of the gross domestic product that healthcare comprises in the United States. Nurses make up the largest proportion of the healthcare field and are often overlooked when it comes to policies to ensure their practice remains safe and licenses protected. Nurses are the eyes and ears of their board-certified providers and detect subtle changes in a patient’s condition. However, such attention to detail can be executed only when the nurses can care …

Evaluating Va Nurse Acceptance Of Virtual Healthcare Technology During The Coronavirus Outbreak, Francesca Bryan-Couch
Evaluating Va Nurse Acceptance Of Virtual Healthcare Technology During The Coronavirus Outbreak, Francesca Bryan-Couch
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
At a regional Veterans Administration (VA) hospital, nurses performing case management were unable to perform face-to-face visits with patients due to coronavirus. Care coordination and discharge planning efforts occurred through telephonic case management to preserve personal protective equipment and reduce transmission rates through social distancing. Trust and rapport between patients and nurses were reduced without personal contact. Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations described six nurse roles and three phases of relationship development required to create therapeutic nurse-patient relationships. Connectedness was a key concept considered to be the path to a successful meaningful therapeutic nurse-patient relationship (Hrabe, 2005).
To evaluate current …
