Improving Oral Hygiene Practices In A Long-Term Care Setting For Individuals With Advanced Dementia: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Rachel L. Mcinerney
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
This quality improvement project utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework to enhance oral hygiene practices in a long-term care setting for individuals with advanced dementia. Advanced dementia often leads to significant oral health challenges due to the individuals’ inability to communicate needs or independently manage oral care. Poor oral hygiene results in pain, systemic infections, and reduced quality of life. The project aimed to identify and address barriers to effective oral care delivery by focusing on organizational factors such as leadership, training, and caregiver support. This capstone paper provides insights into the quality improvement initiative’s aims, background, and methodology, while emphasizing its …
An Exploration Of Substance Abuse By Healthcare Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review, Andrew Hills
An Exploration Of Substance Abuse By Healthcare Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review, Andrew Hills
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Objective
This scoping review aims to identify available literature and research on substance abuse by healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic to examine whether the stress of their duties during the pandemic exacerbated existing issues of substance abuse.
Methods
A literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar using Harzing Publish or Perish identified 100 relevant professionally-authored, peer-reviewed, English-language academic articles published between 2015 and 2025 on substance abuse by HCWs. Exclusions were done via a review of the abstract and then from the full text, reducing the number of articles to three from those three articles which generated an …
Evaluating Surge Capacity In The Emergency Department: A Comprehensive Literature Review On Preparedness And Response Frameworks, Tanner J. Riscoe
Evaluating Surge Capacity In The Emergency Department: A Comprehensive Literature Review On Preparedness And Response Frameworks, Tanner J. Riscoe
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Medical surge capacity in emergency departments is influenced by four critical factors: staff, stuff, space, and systems. Understanding these factors and the interplay between them is critical. Emergency departments are increasingly encountering issues with overcrowding, patient boarding, and medical surge events causing interruptions in care and depleting critical resources. Coordination of medical surge is challenging during normal operations but is intensified during times of crisis. This comprehensive literature review seeks to better understand the current state of the literature surrounding surge preparedness and response in emergency departments across the United States, identify gaps in the current literature, and ultimately recommend …

Priorities To Care Within The Military Health System: A Mixed Methods Study On Military Spouse Access To Care During Covid-19 On Okinawa, Elayne L. Wilson
Priorities To Care Within The Military Health System: A Mixed Methods Study On Military Spouse Access To Care During Covid-19 On Okinawa, Elayne L. Wilson
Theses & Dissertations
Military spouses in Okinawa experienced denial of care at military treatment facilities and off base Japanese healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over two years of travel restrictions further contributed to difficulties accessing healthcare while stationed on the island with their active-duty spouse. This study examined the implications of a priority-based access system through the TRICARE program implemented due to limited resources during COVID-19 and its impact on military spouses in a scarce medical resource environment. This concurrent mixed-methods research used a survey tool developed by Community First Hawaii to quantify access to healthcare and in-depth interviews to further explore …

Patient-Centered Preimplant Education Session And Bi-Weekly Text Message Adherence Reminders In Patients With A Newly Implanted Cardiomems® Device: A Quality Improvement Study, Elizabeth M. Miller, Alicia Abboud, Audrey Cooper
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Rationale
Heart failure is a deadly disease, affecting over 6.2 million individuals and costing the United States an estimated 30.7 billion dollars (Virani et al., 2020). By 2023, heart failure costs in the United States are estimated to grow to 70 billion dollars with 75-80% of these costs attributed to inpatient hospitalizations (Heidereich et al., 2022). The CardioMEMs® is a small device placed in the patient’s pulmonary artery via a minimally invasive procedure by an interventional cardiologist. The use of remote patient data from the CardioMEMs® device has been shown to reduce hospital re-admissions, facilitate tailored medication management, detect increased …
Implementing A Standardized Protocol For Early Detection Of Undiagnosed Hypertension Patients, Jenscena Hansen, Chris Bell
Implementing A Standardized Protocol For Early Detection Of Undiagnosed Hypertension Patients, Jenscena Hansen, Chris Bell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Introduction: Hypertension is a preventable disease that frequently goes unrecognized and undertreated. Early diagnosis can prevent further comorbidities such as heart disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. Implementation of this protocol aims to decrease the number of patients with undiagnosed hypertension and increase the identification of patients with elevated blood pressure who did not have a pre-existing diagnosis of hypertension. The goal of implementing a standardized protocol would help eliminate the number of patients who go undiagnosed.
Methods: This quality improvement design had clinical staff flag patients with elevated blood pressure. Identified patients without a diagnosis of hypertension were educated …

Addressing Equitable Access In A Safety-Net Hospital System: An Implementation Framework, Hillary Alycon
Dissertations: Doctor of Public Health
Acute care organizations face a significant challenge in effectively implementing health equity programs, particularly in rural areas where guidance is often lacking. Despite abundant literature focusing on health outcomes, there remains a noticeable dearth of published data on implementing health equity initiatives. In response to this gap, I present a comprehensive analysis that utilizes readily available, open-sourced data to address this critical issue.
A thorough assessment of the demographic characteristics of acute care facilities within the catchment regions was conducted based on data from reputable sources such as the US Census Bureau, the American Community Survey, and the County Health …
Impact Of Medicaid Redetermination On Underserved Populations In Region 7 States: A Review, Brianna Parr
Impact Of Medicaid Redetermination On Underserved Populations In Region 7 States: A Review, Brianna Parr
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
When the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ended in May of 2023, Medicaid began the process of redetermination across the states and returned to its original eligibility rules. Because of this, the healthcare status of many Americans was affected, resulting in the loss of healthcare coverage for millions of people. Of those who have lost coverage, children make up almost half of the total. This paper assesses the negative effects of Medicaid redetermination on children and other underserved populations in communities across the four states in Region 7 (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas) and identifies programs that these states can implement …
Nurse Initiated Standing Orders: A Process Improvement At An Emergency Department In Interior Alaska, Justin D. Melberg
Nurse Initiated Standing Orders: A Process Improvement At An Emergency Department In Interior Alaska, Justin D. Melberg
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Emergency Departments (EDs) are a valuable and limited public health resource. In addition to treating acute medical emergencies, EDs bridge the gaps in urgent care and primary care accessibility, operating twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, providing care regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. EDs across the country operate at or above capacity regularly, and overcrowding is projected to increase due to decreased facilities and available inpatient beds. Innovative measures are necessary to increase patient throughput and decrease length of stay while maintaining quality care. Nurse initiated standing orders, also known as nurse driven protocols, standing orders, …
Factors Associated With The Difficulty Of Computerized Tasks Among Office-Based Physicians In The United States, Khalid Alshehri
Factors Associated With The Difficulty Of Computerized Tasks Among Office-Based Physicians In The United States, Khalid Alshehri
Theses & Dissertations
Computerized tasks represent an essential component of the modern health care services. A substantial part of these computerized tasks performed by physicians are made for documenting clinical care through Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and using Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs). While these computerized tasks have positively impacted the care provided by physicians, difficulty-based barriers to using these electronic tools were identified. Given the potential unfavorable roles that difficulty-based barriers can play in the provision for health care, it is important to examine factors associated with these barriers. Thus, the core objective of this study is to examine factors associated with …

The Patient-Centered Medical Home And The Value Of Heightened Care Coordination: A Systematic Literature Review, Garrett L. Vetter
The Patient-Centered Medical Home And The Value Of Heightened Care Coordination: A Systematic Literature Review, Garrett L. Vetter
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Health care spending in the United States continues to increase at a pace that far exceeds inflation. Representing a greater proportion of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) than any other country, costs associated with health care services in the U.S. lend support to growing concern regarding the sustainability of current systems. Furthermore, the fragmented nature of the current landscape often presents challenges to the provision of high-quality and efficient care. Satisfaction among both patients and health care providers, alike, suffers under the weight of increasing regulatory burden, the lack of integrated medical records systems, and growing complexity among health …

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Abstract
Introduction:
Inpatient dermatology consultations can bring a mixed bag of pathologies. Due to the highly specialized nature of dermatology and the lack of dermatologic training in medical school, the dermatologic team is consulted for matters that range from non-urgent to pressing. Pictures are a critical component of dermatology and greatly aid in the diagnosis of cutaneous diseases. In the inpatient setting, pictures can help streamline diagnosis and prevent unnecessary tests or procedures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for the presence of pictures in patients’ chart after a dermatology consult had been placed through EPIC at the …
Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, And Maintenance Of Mobile Electronic Clinical Decision Support Tools Deployed As Part Of National Quality Improvement Projects, Ellen K. Kerns
Theses & Dissertations
Electronic clinical decision support (ECDS) tools are often developed within quality improvement (QI) projects to increase adherence with the latest clinical practice guidelines. However, the potential reach and maintenance of ECDS use beyond the time and location of their associated project are very limited. Deploying ECDS using a mobile app (mECDS) has shown the potential to be a viable method of overcoming these limitations. However, it is unclear what pattern the reach and adoption of such a tool might follow and what effect this use has on clinical practice. Our team developed an app which contained two different mECDS tools …
Nebraska Public Guardianship Of Unbefriended Patients: A Preliminary Review Of Health Outcomes And Cost Savings, Emily N. Berzonsky
Nebraska Public Guardianship Of Unbefriended Patients: A Preliminary Review Of Health Outcomes And Cost Savings, Emily N. Berzonsky
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Unbefriended patients often experience an extended length of stay in the hospital while their medical providers await legal appointment of a public guardian to make their medical decisions. The medically unnecessary days the unbefriended patient spends in the hospital equates to high costs for the hospital, but more importantly, negative health outcomes for the patient. The purpose of this study is to provide literature and data to support recommendations for possible changes in Nebraska’s public guardianship appointment process. A literature review seeks to answer: (1) What is the median hospital length of stay for an unbefriended patient without a guardian …
