Improving Patient Safety And Continuity Of Care By Educating Nurses About Standardized Handoffs In The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Remi Dos Santos
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Effective communication during patient handoffs is crucial for ensuring patient safety and continuity of care. The I-PASS handoff tool has been identified as an effective method to standardize communication and reduce errors during these critical transitions.
Local Problem: In the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) of a hospital in New England, the lack of standardized procedures for nurse handoffs posed a risk to patient safety and care quality.
Methods: A quality improvement project was conducted using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to implement and evaluate an educational intervention aimed at improving PACU nurses' proficiency with the I-PASS handoff tool. Pre- and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Implementation of the Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE)-based Guidelines to Improve Perioperative Care of Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Kayleigh Brink
Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is becoming more prevalent with an increasing need to identify and eliminate barriers to care. Healthcare Providers (HCP) have shown limited knowledge and confidence when managing patients with ASD. The inability to provide specialized care and recognize symptoms of pain or discomfort could result in behavioral difficulties.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to improve confidence among HCPs to identify ASD characteristics and to improve the use of …
Implementation Of A Pilot Quality Improvement Project To Guide The Administration Of Intraoperative Dexamethasone For Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting Prophylaxis In Patients With Diabetes Undergoing Orthopedic Procedures, Brittany W. Hall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: At a local tertiary care hospital, there was no recommendation to guide anesthesia providers in the administration of intraoperative dexamethasone to patients with diabetes. While dexamethasone is a highly effective antiemetic, it may promote hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to guide and educate about current recommendations for the administration of dexamethasone for PONV prophylaxis in patients with diabetes.
Intervention: 1) Examined pre-intervention practices of dexamethasone administration. 2) Educated about current and best practices to anesthesia staff. 3) Developed badge buddy cards outlining the guideline. 4) Examined post-intervention practices. 5) Evaluated the effect …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Power Safety Plan Checklist as an Intervention in the Operating Room
Scott J. Fankhauser
Background: Intraoperative power failures (IOPF) force anesthesia providers to quickly make decisions to prevent patient harm when equipment does not operate as designed. Familiarity with alternative methods is critical during this decision process to deliver high-quality care during IOPF events. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to assess the impact of a checklist on anesthesia providers’ perceptions regarding continuation of care during an IOPF. Interventions: Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted during a simulation and education setting for annual competencies. Methods: The study …

Implementation Of A Targeted “Micro-Learning” Inpatient Diabetes Education Program In A Rural Hospital Setting, Melissa Lynn Fannon-Wisner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction/Background: Diabetes affects a large portion of Americans and West Virginians annually. Inpatient hospitalization provides an opportunity to provide evidence-based diabetes education to patients. A lack of access to diabetes education at rural hospitals across the United States exists, creating a need for patients who require education while hospitalized. An intervention needs to be explored to bridge the gap for patients that need education when the diabetes educator is not available.
Purpose: The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to create and implement a video micro-learning diabetic education series that can be utilized for diabetes self-management …

Enhancing Chest Pain And Oxygen Supplementation Protocol Adherence Through Nurse Education In The Emergency Department For Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome And Unspecified Chest Pain: A Quality Improvement Project, Leah Gamble
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract Background: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and unspecified chest pain are common presentations in the Emergency Department (ED). Proper management, including appropriate oxygen supplementation, is crucial for optimal patient outcomes. However, discrepancies between current practice and evidence-based guidelines have been identified, highlighting a need for targeted educational interventions.
Local Problem: In the ED, knowledge gaps among nurses regarding the correct administration of supplemental oxygen for patients with ACS and unspecified chest pain have been observed. This inconsistency with the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines may lead to poor patient outcomes.
Methods: The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) …

Wellness In Motion: A Quality Improvement Initiative To Support Resident Mobility And Reduce Falls., San N. Pham
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Falls are a significant concern in community living centers for older adult veterans. Promoting physical activity and resident engagement is crucial for reducing fall risk among this population.
Local Problem: A specific microsystem within this setting has a fall rate of 3 falls per month. This discrepancy underscores the need for targeted interventions to effectively address this issue.
Methods: This study measured key metrics related to falls and resident engagement in mobility programs both before and after the implementation of an exercise program within the microsystem.
Intervention: The "GIMME 10" exercise program, grounded in evidence-based practices and emphasizing resident-centric …
Promoting Inpatient Mobility To Improve Patient Outcomes: A Quality Improvement Project In A Rural Critical Access Hospital, Chantal Laplante
Promoting Inpatient Mobility To Improve Patient Outcomes: A Quality Improvement Project In A Rural Critical Access Hospital, Chantal Laplante
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Although beneficial to patient outcomes, inpatient ambulation is not a prioritized care intervention, and a task often deferred to physical therapy. Patient immobility is a complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach.
Local Problem: In a rural, critical access hospital, on an 18-bed medical surgical unit, nursing staff lacked ownership of patient mobility. There was no standardized process to document ambulation and mobility tasks were not scheduled, falling to the end of the nursing work list. Many patients did not have activity orders upon admission and nurses lacked resources for ambulation assessment and daily goal setting. There was no …

Improving Dental Students' Knowledge And Confidence In Treating Tobacco Use, Victoria Pierce
DNP Projects
Background: Tobacco use can lead to numerous chronic health conditions. Healthcare professionals in the dental field are in a unique position to broach this issue with patients. Research shows that dental students do not feel equipped to provide tobacco cessation care, citing lack of education on the subject among their top reasons for this.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate changes in dental students’ knowledge and confidence related to treating tobacco use after participation in an educational intervention about the 5A’s, behavioral counseling, and first-line prescription medications.
Methods: This quality improvement initiative utilized a quasi-experimental survey design …

Background: Lung cancer is a significant problem in Kentucky, which ranks fourth in the nation in adults who currently smoke. Early detection, through lung cancer screening, can prevent untimely deaths. Several barriers to screening exist including lack of knowledge and awareness among patients regarding lung cancer screening. By increasing knowledge, at risk patients can take the necessary steps to decrease incidence of late stage diagnoses.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate patients’ knowledge of lung cancer screening and referral and screening rates before and after one-on-one patient education.
Methods: This was a quality improvement project that used …
