A newly established pediatric outpatient infusion center in Los Angeles does not have immediate access to a Code Blue Team or a Rapid Response Team, and instead relies on the Staff Assist protocol to manage medical emergencies. Via direct interviews, registered nurses at the infusion center report feeling underprepared and lacking confidence to respond to medical emergencies that must be escalated to code blue. Microsystem assessment tools determined the root cause to be limited clinical exposure and limited opportunities for skills development. To address the nurses' concerns, Practicing Responses to Acute Clinical Troubles: Initiative through Clinical Education (P.R.A.C.T.I.C.E.) was implemented …

Implementing Bedside Shift Report In The Home Health Care Pediatric Setting, Ruth Elena Ramos-Ardila
Implementing Bedside Shift Report In The Home Health Care Pediatric Setting, Ruth Elena Ramos-Ardila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developing and maintaining good communication is central in nursing because the goal is to achieve the best outcomes for the patient. In the past, written handover reports have been the standard way nurses communicate with each other, especially in the hospital and in home-based practice. Despite this rationale, this approach has considerable weaknesses: its high risk of mistakes and misunderstanding could negatively influence patient outcomes. In light of these concerns, this project examines the role of bedside shift reports in pediatric home care and the patient readmission rate. This project employed a quantitative, cross-sectional research approach involving 32 pediatric home …

Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …
