Reducing Acute Healthcare Services With Self-Management Of Blood Pressure Monitoring Through Remote Patient Monitoring For Hypertensive Patients A Quality Improvement Project, Becky J. Wagner
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Hypertension (HTN) affects nearly half of U.S. adults and remains a leading cause of preventable emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs due to poor blood pressure (BP) control (Fryar et al., 2024; Mullins et al., 2019). Traditional care models often lack the continuous monitoring and timely intervention needed for effective chronic disease management. Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) provides an innovative approach by delivering real-time BP data, enabling early clinical intervention, and encouraging patient engagement in self-management (Omboni et al., 2020).
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project evaluated the effectiveness of an RPM intervention in reducing acute healthcare …
Healthcare Access And The Persistent Racial Disparities In Low Birth Weight, Zaheda A. Hussain, Yadanar Moe
Healthcare Access And The Persistent Racial Disparities In Low Birth Weight, Zaheda A. Hussain, Yadanar Moe
DePaul Discoveries
Low birth weight (LBW), defined as less than 2,500 grams, is an influential factor contributing to infant mortality in the United States, with significant racial disparities between Black and White mothers. This study analyzed data from 3,054 Black and White mothers collected from the 2018 National Health Interview Survey to explore the association between access to medical care and LBW within different racial groups. The prevalence of LBW was 8.0%. Overall, mothers without a usual place of medical care had, on average, an 18% higher risk of LBW than those with a usual place (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.80–1.74). …
Standardized Infection Prevention Protocol To Reduce Surgical Site Infections In Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pisey Kareth
Standardized Infection Prevention Protocol To Reduce Surgical Site Infections In Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pisey Kareth
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Project
Problem: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a significant concern in the pediatric neurosurgical patient population and are associated with increased morbidity, longer hospital stays, and increased medical expenses. The absence of a standardized preoperative infection prevention process led to variability in perioperative care practices and infections at the practicum site.
Aim of the Project: The aim of the project was to reduce the incidence of SSIs among pediatric patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures who were initially evaluated in an ambulatory setting.
Review of the Evidence: Evidence supports the implementation of bundled infection prevention strategies as a more effective approach to reducing …
Exercise Prescription For Adults With Prediabetes In The Primary Care Clinic, Katherine W. Hall
Exercise Prescription For Adults With Prediabetes In The Primary Care Clinic, Katherine W. Hall
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Prediabetes affects approximately one in three adults in the United States, with an estimated 10% progressing to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) annually. Despite strong evidence supporting exercise as a first-line intervention to prevent disease progression, most patients in primary care settings do not receive structured physical activity counseling. This evidence-based project (EBP) aims to address this gap by implementing a standardized protocol to assess baseline physical activity levels and deliver individualized exercise prescriptions to adults with prediabetes in the primary care clinic.
Eligible participants, defined by HbA1c values between 5.70% and 6.49%, were identified during routine primary care visits …
Exploring Health Insurance’S Role In Chronic Disease Management Among Hispanics, Romelyn Dones
Exploring Health Insurance’S Role In Chronic Disease Management Among Hispanics, Romelyn Dones
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This qualitative study examined how insured non-English- and English-speaking Hispanic adults perceive the role of health insurance in the management of chronic disease. Chronic conditions remain a leading cause of morbidity in the United States, and although prior research suggests that insurance coverage improves access to care, it does not always enhance how individuals understand or utilize support for chronic disease management. Limited research has explored how individuals with chronic conditions interpret the role of insurance in their daily self-management practices, particularly among Hispanic populations. Guided by Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, this study explored how contextual, enabling, …

SPARK Symposium Presentations
This project proposes a nurse-led pilot of AI-supported predictive mobility monitoring on a cardiac medical-surgical unit, to improve early identification of high-risk mobility behaviors and enhance patient safety. Current fall-prevention strategies, such as bed alarms and virtual sitters, often alert staff after unsafe movement has begun, creating a reactive cycle that contributes to alarm fatigue and delayed intervention (Abbe & O’Keeffe, 2020). This initiative uses monitors with contactless infrared sensors to identify movement before patients exit the bed, an alert system that goes straight to the nurse and PCT phones, and a central console for floor management and care coordination. …

Decreasing Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries Through A Multi-Intervention Approach: A Quality Improvement Project, Kendra D. Crawford
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) continue to plague hospitals across the country. HAPIs are an indication of the quality of care delivered by the hospital’s nursing workforce. These injuries are costly to organizations and can lead to increased length of stay (LOS). The development of a HAPI, depending on severity, is a reportable injury and is classified as patient harm. Patients who suffer from HAPIs can experience significant pain and at times, permanent disfigurement. This project’s focus is a community hospital that has seen a steady increase in HAPIs over the last 2 years. During 2025, 28% of the …

Reducing Respiratory Viral Testing In A Pediatric Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Anna Suessman
Reducing Respiratory Viral Testing In A Pediatric Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Anna Suessman
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Background: Respiratory viral testing in pediatric emergency departments (EDs) is frequently performed despite limited impact on clinical management for many low-risk presentations. Unnecessary testing increases cost and operational burden may delay patient throughput and can provide false reassurance to caregivers. Additionally, pediatric emergency department nurses agreed with overburden and impact to throughput based on overuse of viral testing (qualitative nursing survey conducted on September 4, 2024 showed >98% felt testing was unnecessary). We hypothesized that reducing testing through standardized team education and discharge processes would not negatively affect patient experience. This initiative aimed to decrease unnecessary respiratory viral testing during …

Timelines Of Care: Analyzing Treatment Access For Women With Ongoing Reproductive Health Needs, Nyla M. Keith
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Mandates in the United States created pressure on an already strained healthcare system post-COVID-19 pandemic. With new regulations placed upon abortion care forcing the closing of low-cost health clinics such as Planned Parenthood, legislation that has made health insurance more expensive, and rising pharmaceutical prices, women’s OB/GYN care in America has struggled to meet patient needs. A cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to four clinics in the Orlando area to assess patients' perceived access to care and identify barriers to receiving OB/GYN care. The survey took approximately 10 – 15 minutes to complete, was available in print and online …

Identifying The Physical Activity Promotion Practices Of Obstetricians And Gynecologists: Patients With Endometriosis And Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Allison P. Herman
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Despite efforts to promote physical activity, many females in Canada do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines. For individuals with gynecological conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), physical activity may aid in symptom management and improve daily functioning. Healthcare settings, including obstetrics and gynecology, represent an area of opportunity to promote physical activity among this population. This thesis aims to understand the physical activity promotion practices of Ontario-based Obstetricians and Gynecologists (OBGYNs) to patients with endometriosis and/or PCOS. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to explore OBGYNs promotional practices and perceived factors influencing their engagement in physical …

The Connection Between Medicaid And Obesity In Northeast Ohio, Emmie Kelley, Sophie Kheder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Obesity is a major public health concern in the United States that is projected to increase exponentially over the next few years. Obesity is commonly associated with a lower socioeconomic status. Lower-income individuals tend to be supported by Medicaid, a federal insurance program for low-income Americans. Prior studies have shown a positive correlation between income status and obesity prevalence. Our goal was to find if there was a correlation between Medicaid patients and obesity in Northeast Ohio, to provide physicians with a set of characteristics to better combat obesity, since preventative and treatment guidelines are tailored to national trends. We …
