Gaining Compliance And Losing Weight: The Role Of The Service Provider In Health Care Services, Stephanie Dellande, Mary C. Gilly, John L. Graham

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This research provides and empirically tests a conceptualization of health care services in which customer compliance outside of the service organization is necessary for successful health outcomes. Using data from service providers and customers in a weight-loss clinic, the authors examine the provider's role in gaining customer compliance. They find that provider expertise and attitudinal homophily play a role in bringing about customer role clarity, ability, and motivation. This study demonstrates that compliance leads to goal attainment, which results in satisfaction. More important, compliance also leads to satisfaction directly; consumers who comply with program requirements have greater satisfaction with the …

Designing A Strategy To Effectively Communicate The Balanced Scorecard, Andra Gumbus, Bridget Lyons, Tom Wilson

WCBT Faculty Publications

As increasing numbers of organizations adopt the balanced scorecard (BSC) to align strategy with operations and measure progress toward meeting strategic goals, the importance of successful communication of the scorecard throughout the organization has become apparent. Successful implementation and effective use of the BSC occurs when organizational stakeholders recognize its role, use, and benefits. In the March/April 2003 issue of Cost Management, we detailed how Bridgeport Hospital, a member of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), adopted the BSC and used the scorecard to align capital investment decisions with strategy.1 In this article, we will profile how the hospital designed …

Knowledge Management In The Healthcare Sector, Srinivas Krishna Dec 2001

Knowledge Management In The Healthcare Sector, Srinivas Krishna

IIMB Management Review

The healthcare sector across the globe is under going a cultural transformation, as the traditional passive and respectful patient opulation is replaced by an assertive and sceptical group of ‘customers’. As the educated and informed consumer moves through the healthcare system and begins to use more services, s/he is demanding information and choice, engaging in self-care and selfmanagement of diseases, and asserting a voice in making healthcare decisions with providers. The proliferation of clinical data, outcomes management, provider information and pricing transparency will allow consumers to be responsible for their own destinies in a historically anti-consumer healthcare system. In fact, …

The Drama Of Dysfunction: Value Conflict In Us Managed Care, Diana D. Mrotek

WCBT Faculty Publications

The transformation of the American health care environment from retrospective fee-for-service to managed care has been both rapid and chaotic. It also includes a systems analysis of the rapidly changing mosaic of unconscious processes that resulted from the divergent values held by the public and health care professionals, using various organization behavior …

Latino Access To Health Care: The Role Of Insurance, Managed Care, And Institutional Barriers, J. Emilio Carrillo, Fernando M. Trevino, Joseph R. Betancourt, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

The health care system in the United States is the most expensive and yet arguably among the least cost effective in the developed world (Anderson, 1998). Despite the highest per person health care spending among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations, the United States still ranks below many along a variety of health indicators (Woolhandler & Himmelstein, 1991). In a complicated health care system where the rules are many and economic forces drive both structure and function, the needs of vulnerable populations inevitably suffer. This chapter explores the consequences of these market forces on a vulnerable population--Latinos …

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander Dec 2000

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper focuses on a radical change, in which organizations abandon an institutionalized template for arranging their core activities, that is likely to occur in organizational fields that have strong, local market forces and strong but heterogeneous institutional forces. We examine the role of market forces and heterogeneous institutional elements in promoting divergent change in core activities among all U.S. rural hospitals from 1984 to 1991. Results support the view that divergent change depends on both market forces (proximity to competitors, disadvantages in service mix) and institutional forces (state regulation, ownership and governance norms, and mimicry of models of divergent …

Previous research in the area of self-care has focused on medical beneficiaries in a wide range of settings, but the current or former members of the United States Armed Services have largely been ignored. Hospitals are facing change in today's environment. In order to meet these growing challenges, they are responding by providing value added services. Value added services have been defined as reducing inefficiencies and improving quality and service. Operational restructuring in the form of a new concept called patient-focused care has become the paradigm shift and structural revamping at several hospitals across the nation. Sentara Hospitals have adopted this program to improve the clinical and service quality delivered to the patient. An integral component of this new approach is the multiskilling of staff to reduce duplication, inefficiencies, and improve the quality provided …
