Background: Crowding and boarding pediatric emergency departments (ED) is an ongoing problem associated with a mismatch in resources and patient care demands. ED boarding can be defined as a patient admitted to an inpatient unit who remains in the ED. ED boarding occurs when there is limited availability of inpatient bed space – either due to patient volume or decreased staffing. ED boarding is associated with adverse events, and increased mortality. Few studies address the impact of inpatient strategies on ED boarding. Typically,nursing has been considered a gendered profession dominated by women. As traditionally blue-collar, male-dominated occupations such as assembly-line work have declined,the percentage of men in the nursing profession has increased to 12%. This is not a recent phenomenon;a significant percentage of men served as nurses up through the 1800’s.

This poster outlines strategies for creating a support system for online graduate students learning new software. The Northcentral University (NCU) Library is a 100 percent online library providing services and delivering resources to students in a remote context. According to university facts and figures, approximately 98 percent of students are enrolled in a graduate program and nearly 69 percent of those students are pursuing a doctoral degree. In May 2019, a reference and instruction librarian developed a program to support graduate students learning how to use ProQuest RefWorks, a web-based research management tool. This work describes an undergraduate honors research project into some of the challenges modern healthcare providers face in maintaining compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act. An overview of the pertinent sections of both the HIPAA and HITECH Acts regarding health information security is provided, along with a discussion of traditionally weak points in information security, including: people susceptible to social engineering, software that is not or cannot be regularly updated, and targeted attacks (including advanced persistent threats, or APTs).
