Targeted Skin Cancer Education Improves Agricultural Workers' Safe Sun Practices and Knowledge in South Dakota: A Farm Show Survey
Leah Naasz, MD | Candace Zeigler, MD
Background: Agricultural workers are at increased risk for skin cancer due to prolonged ultraviolet (UV) exposure, yet many underutilize sun protection. Brief, community-based educational interventions may improve knowledge and preventive behaviors.
Objective: To provide a targeted skin cancer educational session to increase awareness and promote sun protection behaviors among agricultural workers in South Dakota.
Methods: Twenty agricultural workers attending the Vermillion and Sioux Falls Farm Shows participated in a pre- and post-educational survey. Inclusion …

The Rapid Case Of Anoxic Brain Injury Secondary To Hyperammonemia, Jacqueline Bekhit, Ngoc Vu, Jiaming Xue, Gabriella David, Qasim Sajawal
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Background: Acute hyperammonemia presents as a toxic state with the clinical presentation as altered consciousness, seizures, and coma. Hyperammonemia disrupts astrocytes osmotic balance via glutamine accumulation, triggering brain edema, inflammation, and apoptosis whom mechanism is closely parallel to hypoxic ischemic injury. This overlap necessitates differentiating metabolic causes from hypoxic etiologies, as timely ammonia clearance therapies can prevent catastrophic outcomes. This case underscores the need for close clinical vigilance and early recognition of severe hyperammonemia
Case Presentation: A 65-year-old woman with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease related cirrhosis complicated by recurrent ascites requiring bimonthly paracentesis presented with abdominal distension and pain. …

Pain And Pace: Investigating Gait Velocity In Individuals With Cancer, Melaina E. Taylor
Pain And Pace: Investigating Gait Velocity In Individuals With Cancer, Melaina E. Taylor
2026 Honors Symposium
Background: Cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide, with incidence rates continuing to rise. Pain, a hallmark symptom of many cancers, is caused by both the progression of disease and treatments. Gait, the way in which someone walks, is now dubbed the “6th vital sign” for its strong relationship with functional status, longevity, and survival. Specifically, gait velocity is a key metric for gait, with previous studies in cancer free adults showing increased pain associated with a decreased gait velocity. The relationship between gait velocity and pain has not yet been explored in individuals with cancer. Purpose: The …

A Review Of Mobility And Gait Changes In Patients With Prostate Cancer: Disease Stage, Symptom, And Treatment-Related Influences, Lauren Hathorn, Abigail Schmitt Dr
2026 Honors Symposium
Background: This review examines the impact of prostate cancer symptoms, progression, and treatments on patients’ gait and mobility. Prostate cancer is the leading cancer diagnosis for men in the United States, with an increase in incidents in the last decade. Prostate cancer, its progression, and its various symptoms and treatments have both physical and functional consequences that often cause changes in patients’ mobility and gait. Some studies have found gait to be a predictor of functional decline and mortality. Given that functional decline and mortality are also consequences of cancer progression and cancer treatments, gait analysis could offer a non-invasive …

The Unlikely Case Of Sporadic Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura With Refractory And Seizure-Like Activity Features: Case Report, Brandon Gremmer, Alain Folefack
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Introduction/Background: Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a multisystem disease that can lead to multiorgan failure by disseminated mechanical destruction, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Most TTP cases are classified as acquired or hereditary; however, sporadic immune TTP with a refractory episode during the same hospital admission is not well documented in the literature. Furthermore, seizure-like activity during plasma exchange is not a common adverse effect.
Case Presentation: A 35-year-old African American female with no documented medical, surgical, or social history, changes to medications, or lifestyle changes presented with full body fatigue, fever, loss of balance, and confusion. On arrival, labs …

A Case Of Severe Synodic Stenosis In A Patient With Granalomatosis With Polyangitis Requiring Tracheostomy, Yousuf Sherwani, Mohan Sengodan
North Texas Research Forum 2025
Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is characterized by vasculitis of small and medium sized blood vessels and granulomatous lesions of the upper respiratory tract. A rare condition associated with GPA, subglottic stenosis, presents in about 20% of cases on inpatient GPA. Symptoms such as stridor, hoarseness, dyspnea and dysphagia are hall marks of subglottic stenosis. Here we present the case of a male patient with life threatening subglottic stenosis that required tracheostomy.
